The story of Zion's recruitment was retold on the Five Rings podcast last week. See link below. It was Matt Dougherty's staff that found Zion.

Great listen. The first 2/3 of the podcast is about Jarren Williams and the last part is about Zion Nelson and others.

If he wasn’t ready he wouldn’t be out there. He faced the best DEs in the country every day. If he wasn’t overwhelmed by that, then he’s going to be fine. True freshman play and excel these days.

You guys act like it’s impossible to evaluate an OL in practice. It ain’t like QB where they don’t get hit all offseason and then get thrown into the fire and have to make split second decisions on every snap. You can absolutely test an OLineman’s mettle in practice by sending these dogs at him full speed every day.

They tested Herbert, and he failed. They replaced him. Zion passed.

Manny Diaz the DC never talked up a player or a unit without the play on the field backing it up. He never pulled the old trick coaches do to keep interest by instilling false confidence into the fanbase. Whenever Manny praised a played in thr last 3 years they would generally prove him right in the next game or whenever they got their opportunity.

I personally feel like I'll need to see it to believe it still with Zion, but I do have to admit the fact that Manny has talked him up as much as he has, and he has even praised Campbell quite a bit, has me wanting to drink the koolaid. If Barry has this OL playing as a competent unit starting tonight then I love our chance. There's plenty of reason to be cautious with this team, but Manny talking up the OL and tackles has me wanting to be excited.

Hope that he and Campbell knock it out of the park.

Having a couple really young ones on the OL produce well under Barry in his 1st year here would make getting the big-time OL a lot easier.

This.

Man. It’s easy to focus on some of the obvious weaknesses and then I am reminded about our TE position and our OC.
Enos with our skill guys will be killer as long as our OL holds up and JW is capable. The wild card on OL is Nelson. i expect Williams to be okay. Ergo as long as Nelson holds up, Enos gone make a mess in Florida’s kitchen, eaten oreos and spilling cereal eerywhere.

I don't think anyone thinks that he isn't the best option, the concern is what if he is only the best option b/c everyone has been terrible and he has been the least terrible - not saying that is the case, but it is the concern.
