You Want To See Quality UM LBer Play??

The lbers back then wouldn’t be able to do everything that’s being asked of these players today... different game chump. If that basic defense that was being played back then worked now Shaq and Pinckney and even McCLoud would be putting up Dan Morgan type numbers.
While I somewhat agree, I think the point most are trying to make is that those guys stood out even in a "basic" defense. What's Shaq, Pinck, or McCloud's defining play?

Not even close.

He was a solid LB.

Top 5 Miami? No.

He absolutely should be in consideration for top 5, just think about it. He actually stood out on a golden non attacking defense.... do you know how hard that is? Plus those other guys played with more talent around them and upfront and perryman was a force by his **** self

Perryman isnt even top 5. Too slow.

Best tackler ever. Not best linebacker ever. For 30 years Miami's defensive scheme was about swarming to the ball and gang tackling. Then all of the sudden, Mark D'Onofrio installs the world's worst defense and Perryman is consistently left alone to tackle everyone. When he got his hands on someone, they were going down.

Michigan State has been running “that basic defense” to top ten or better rankings every single year for years now.

Just bc Manny’s wack *** defense requires LBs to make seven hundred unnecessary reads and blitzes doesnt mean that simple defenses, like the 4-3 slide or the Kiffin 4-3 dont exist any more. They do, and they are amazingly effective.

That so-called Basic defense destroyed all the supposedly invincible Veer and Wishbones that were wrecking havoc for 50yrs.....
Anyone who thinks Barrow and Company wouldn't be able to play LBer today, needs their *** whipped.....
Only a profound Moron would believe that....All three would be AAs or All ACC at worse today......

The wishbone didn't become a popular offense in college football until the 1970's. By the late 80's almost every team had abandoned it. jimmy Johnson killed it. His defense was perfect for the one dimensional offenses of the 1980's.

FWIW, the game has changed a lot. Playing LB is much more difficult today.

Obviously not taking away from the greats, just an observation.
Barrow, Smith and Armstead played a combined 36 years in the NFL and appeared in numerous pro bowls. The idea that something is different that would make them look bad is silly, imo. Our guys look less stellar than they used to because we have had very few NFL quality LBs the past decade, let alone all pro quality LBs — and we historically had fantastic LBs.

Perhaps I worded it poorly. I was never saying that those guys wouldn’t be great. Most of those guys had the speed/instincts to be great today.

We need to recruit more speed at the position
