Coaching You can’t defend Cristobal anymore

I am absolutely hanging on plays that literally changed the game. Changed it from a 10 point win to a loss. Plays that high school players make every Friday night.
Those were three plays. Important ones for sure. But there were also like 55 others, many of which were either completely ineffective or hamstrung by the same penalty mistakes we make every year.

Are we allowed to criticize the coaching staff for that or do we need to just hope and pray each week that a kid playing his first meaningful snaps of the season doesn’t make a crucial mistake?

I’d sure like to hope that we can field a team good enough to overcome a bad mistake or two. But maybe that’s just me.

I understand the point here and I’m NOT defending our coaching staff. But for what it’s worth, Lashlee is not doing better in the win column. And if we had lost 13-12 to Wake Forest, South Florida would be on fire right now.

I get that part of the argument is that Lashlee would be better if he had our talent perhaps, but part of the reason we have that talent is because that’s what Mario is good at. You cannot throw the baby out with the bath water in this situation.
All I know is Lashlee won the ACC and made the CFP in year one and beat us head to head with less talent in year two. What good is the talent if you don’t know how to best utilize it?

I get it. But I think that oversimplifies the situation. Credit to SMU, but they were unbelievably lucky last year. And sure, they deserve credit for beating us, but it isn't like SMU was particularly convincing in that game. They lost to a Wake Forest team that FSU just absolutely blew the doors off. We'd be catatonic if he did that as our coach. Lashlee is a good coach and I miss his offensive ingenuity, but the grass may not be greener necessarily.

As for the question of what good is talent if you don't know how to use it? I couldn't agree more. Our style doesn't seem to utilize that talent advantage, as many others have pointed out.

We can criticize the coaching all we want. But at least have some understanding of what we're criticizing. The running game did not cause that loss, and neither did any in-game decisions. It was lost because of penalties and incompetence by players who are being paid very well to make plays.

So if you have a beef about the way we're not preparing guys during the week, have at it. But this mob mentality about "running straight into the pile" and "gameday coaching" is just plain stupid. Those two things were the least of our worries on Saturday.

In my opinion - Lashlee at miami recruits in between Lashlee at SMU and Mario at UM and wins more games.

This is true and why the loss was more painful it was a chance at redemption.

I mean we all know that SMU team shouldn't have been in the playoffs that was just a committee f***up. But we blew our chance at redemption.

He's like Hurricane season, starts strong then drops off in November as the threat of really bad storms loom, but seldom occur.

His 4-11 in November+ suggests Oregon fans that came over here after the hire were correct. If you recall they said we'd like his recruiting, but game management and having a team ready to play, not so much.

They said - "Wait, you'll see..."

He kneeled with 25 seconds left as opposed two pass completion attempts and a long field goal try. It was a perfect exclamation for how he corches.

There’s plenty of blame aside from him like you said with the penalties but it all comes back to him.

I think this is fair, I'm kinda neutral on Lashlee I'm not sure it's a lock, but I would probably agree. But it gotta be said if the officiating is even in the ballpark of fair Saturday he doesn't win that game. There's bad calls yada yada yada and the thought usually is they will even out, but what happened in the last 2:15 of regulation was ridiculous and basically robbery. That doesn't excuse Cristobal's game day shortcomings and the fact that this idiot inexplicably took a knee at the end of regulation.

That's a pretty lame example. You've been here long enough to know what this board would do if Pick threw an interception right there.

No strong disagreement here. I think Lashlee can certainly scheme a victory with lesser talent much better than Mario. In between Lashlee at SMU and Mario at Miami is good for like the 17th or 18th-best recruiting class in the country, which, in my opinion, is not going to get it done.

That last penalty event you’re referencing was game changing. I know we should still be better to not leave it to the refs but it’s getting harder to ignore. Last year we had a safety that wasn’t in some bizarre way

I was a Mario guy and still would love for him to succeed but unless he gets out of the way we will not take the next step. I feel like this is Deja Vu all over again with Butch. The penalties, terrible play calling and losing to teams we should beat. I'm done defending him. He either gets out of the way or packs his bags.

Yes you can.

It’s being done in multiple threads again. Talk of where we will be ranked today, what happens if we win out, why Mario isn’t to blame for our offensive woes, why the refs prevented us from winning against SMU.

Anything but facing the cold, hard, very apparent truth. It’s a sickness that’s honestly hilarious to watch unfold.

Mario picked the QB. He also still has Emory as the backup and first man up after that bowl game performance last year. That’s on him. You can’t coach scared and win anything of significance
