If we land Jaylon Robinson that should solidify the WR corps and give Gattis and TVD more tools to work with. I think he will step in as WR1 right away. Which leads to my main observation of the lack of top shelf talent at the position currently on the roster.

We have recruited well there according to all the recruiting rankings and it is disappointing that nobody has stepped up during the spring to earn the decisive WR1 job that was there for the taking. I was hoping that Ladson would be that guy. I hear positive things about Restrepo and George and from all accounts have had a good spring. Smith has shown that he can play and contribute. But I was looking for 1-2 out of the players listed below to break out and nobody has really separated. Seems like we have a bunch of solid WR2 type players there but no ballers.

They are mostly second year guys so I'm not writing them off by any means but the tea leaves suggest we need a significant influx of talent there. Its also worth noting that Jaylon Robinson is listed at 5-10 170 which is generally the same makeup as the WRs currently on roster and we ideally needed a bigger body for WR1.

According to the"experts" and rankings, we've recruited South Fla skill positions very well for the past decade. Problem has been either that players were overrated, expectations were too high and/or no skill development occurred. Has sorta given the area a bit of a black eye as it's easy now to wonder a bit if So Fla recruits are as good fundamentally and ceiling-wise as they once were.

As for linemen (especially OL), forget about it.

Seems like we have been recruiting the overrated guys or just not developing them. Probably a little of both. The big local names that have gotten away in the past seem to have a higher hit rate than the ones we landed (C. Ridley, Jeudy, A. Cooper and some less touted ones like shwartz? from auburn are some that come to mind off top). We have gotten our share over the years but not enough.

I thought Pope and more recently Ladson would change that trend. But looking at the current roster there are highly touted guys and you know they are receiving good coaching. Like you said not sure how high their ceiling is though. There was a big gaping hole at WR1 and nobody seized it. Need to continue developing them as they are all young for the most part. Quality of talent acquisition needs to improve and I think that's happening now with Gattis and Mario

And what also has to be factored in is the offensive system...

Up until 2020, we didn’t really have a WR friendly system that was conducive to high productivity, so our WR’s have had to be exceptionally good in order to really produce in the offenses we’ve had beforehand. Hence, Stacy Coley & Ahmmon having great seasons in 2016 & even then we had an offensive slump for a 4 game stretch during the losing streak. But otherwise, unless we had kids who could win vs Press man coverage & understood how to attack leverage, we pretty much have had underachieving WR’s because the offenses we’ve ran were much harder on WR’s who aren’t adept at the nuances of the position. Lashlee’s offense made it easier because it was simplistic & wide open.

The reason why it’s imperative that we add a true deep ball threat is because with out we’ll be playing with one arm tied behind our backs & Defenses not respecting the Deep ball element will make them crowd the box with 7/8 man fronts & will make it that much harder for the TE’s to truly be effective.

What we have is a 3-5 pieces at WR that have the potential to be really good, but haven’t shown the consistency enough to the satisfaction of the staff’s liking to the point where they feel as though they wouldn’t need to add another playmaker. Mario very openly was displeased with the WR’s performance in the Spring game & said so explicitly & publicly on Joe Rose show a month ago back in April. The weird resistance to another WR on this board has pretty much been boiled down to pure classic Spring time Homerism, but the reality is, from a production standpoint & from an offensive standpoint, going into the season with the unproven WR group we have that struggles to get open in a much harder offense than last year’s is a big red flag that the coaches are very wisely trying to address.

No Jaylon is not the prototype ideal X WR that you’d like, but what he is is a productive vet playmaker with legit 4.4/4.3 speed that has done it before & adds an element that is needed to the offense. For those of you who want to give us the best chance to beat TAMU, yall should be the main ones hoping & praying we get this kid because we’re absolutely gonna need him against that big physical & talented secondary.

Because believe you me, if we roll into College station on September 17th, trying to play conservative dink & dunk ball against that heavy talent laden Defense & there’s no one to take the top off & stretch the field, it’s gonna look like Miami vs Clemson 2020 game all over again... And yes, I know TVD is a much better QB, but even the best QB’s in the world can’t account for having no one to throw the ball to & not having someone that can produce explosive playmaking when it counts the most.

yup! Especially when they stack the box because they don't fear our WRs and the Oline can't sustain blocks.

Rambo was a one-year transfer WR with average speed, average athleticism and mediocre traits, yet he thrived with TVD as a QB. TVD is a legit first round QB and he will have a big year in Gattis offense. If Rambo can put up big numbers with TVD, I am confident that the Canes will have WRs with big years.

Different offense.

Rambo thrived because the system was designed for high volume targets to his side of the field, based on the matchups. Rambo wouldn’t have put up those kind of #’s in different system that require more sophisticated route combos, hence why he went undrafted despite having really good production.

He was a product of the Offense, not the other way around.

I miss AR and Jeff Thomas in the same offense. What coukd have been...

Lol. Imagine if Richt ran a spread offense with a good QB in 2017 (and if Njoku stayed). AR, JT4, Njoku, Walton, DJ Dallas, Herndon, Berrios, Cager, Homer...Then you really start thinking What could've been. People keep crabbin about how we were secretly bad in 2017 and "lucky"...but ignoring how much talent we had offensively.

Definitely need Robinson's speed. There's some questions though.

Read on 247 that "one area that Robinson needs to clean up from the 2020 season is drops. PFF credited him with 11 drops that season, which was tied for the most amongst wide receivers in the country." He was injured in 2021 and only played 6 games.

He'd be public enemy #1 around here real quick if he drops passes like that.

Let's play the "what if" game.

What would've happened if Richt gave up on his 1995 offense, Jon and Malik, and ended up with Lashlee and King in 2017? Do we sneak into the playoffs?

In all seriousness, how the **** did Malik break the school record for TDs in THAT O? It's not that he was downright horrible ALL the time, but when he was bad, he was really, really bad. Still, he holds the school record for TDs in a season. Until that record is broken, we won't compete for anything. Seeing as how King couldn't break the record in Lashlee's O, I am not convinced he would have done it in Richt's.

I’m gonna say this unit will go as far as X7 can take them. Needs to have a Brax level year for this offense to be good/great. Outside of him guys are just unproven and will either step up or prove they don’t belong at this level

The success of our offense is dependent on a 5'10 slot receiver with average speed?

We better hope the TE’s can match the hype & stay healthy bc this group is average as it gets.

Any DC worth his weight will stack the box all game.
