The point which happens all the time in NFL circles when coaches take interviews for jobs they know they aren’t going to get because it’s get them face time with powerful people and helps them build a connection. Look at the patriots, everyone and their mother knew they were bringing back Bill o brien, but people still lined up to interview with Bill because now bill knows them and their capabilities. Say a GM or another head coach ask Bill in casual conversation what he thinks of a coach, bill can now say oh yeah we interviewed him for our OC job a few years ago, bright dude, he just wasn’t ready.

For hanks situation, Alonzo is clearly respected in NFL circles and I’m sure still gets asked about players and coaches. Hank could leverage his FaceTime with Alonzo to help build his reputation. Or it’s simply hey I love Miami, this isn’t the right time, glad we got to talk, maybe we can circle back in a few years. Now Mario and Alonzo know Hank.

Look, I'm going to leave it at this.

I agree with the last paragraph. 100%. And that is 100% why the Rooney Rule was instituted, because of the bullcrap circular argument about "we don't have any qualified minority candidates" coupled with "but you don't even let minority candidates figure out how to even interview". And you keep referencing the NFL process, of which there are only 32 job openings total (whether it is HC, coordinator, or position coach).

But that is different from college, and the concept of interviewing "to learn how to interview" vs. interviewing "to have a future job reference", particularly when we are talking about 130+ potential job openings at any given level of coaching.

To make things simple, Hank interviewed for a job HE COULD GET, not just a job that was beyond him, and then chalking it up as "an experience". And as others have pointed out, his family lives here. So it's real. It's not "professional suicide" or anything like that for him to consider taking a job with UM.

And think about this one final consideration. We've seen more than a few guys change positions because there may be confusion over "who gets the credit for the improvement, the head coach, the coordinator, or the position coach" (Riley to Clemson). So maybe Hank believes that a successful UM turnaround job will make him look better than a few more years of riding the success train in San Francisco. I think that the reasons why Hank is legit interested in the UM job outweigh some of the reasons why he might only be taking a courtesy interview.

We shall see how it all plays out soon.

Anything else, the ability to “teach and develop” is a distant second to that. Especially in an Air Raid. I will worry about J. Smith not being able to learn the 5 passing plays in the offense, once he’s on campus.

And I merely disagree with two points.

First, I don't think "the checkbook" is the issue. At all.

Second, I don't think the ability to teach and develop is "a distant second". It's incredibly important.

Finally, as more of a conclusion, it's possible to have BOTH (or at least get close on both). You don't need 11 super-recruiters just to succeed. If we can find a spot for Coley (which I think is likely based on Mario's preferences), then we will be fine.

What the **** is up with you all wanting coaches back for a 2nd go around? The only one I wouldn't mind is Coley only at WR. But after Hank's name came up, I'd take him over Coley.
