I feel the exact same. Mario was being touted as an elite recruiter and I knew he wouldn't come here and things will change overnight BUT I definitely thought our recruiting would be way more balanced. I knew recruiting wise some areas(OL) would be stronger than others but I didn't expect the weaker areas(DT, S, CB(befor this offseason) to be THIS weak.
I'm trending this way as well. I was trying to give the staff the benefit of the doubt because of how unbalanced the roster was coming in and knew it would take a bit to get it right, but it seems that areas are still very unbalanced. Almost like they can't walk and chew gum at the same time. OL we all knew would get fixed, and fast, but I think WR, DT, LB, and DB are still lagging behind where they should be. We don't have the elite depth we would expect from an elite recruiter. Until proven otherwise, improvement is there, but to think we are going to take the field and confidently know we have the horses to go head to head with the upper echelon of the sport, we have a ways to go.

if you’re going to use the nfl draft to evaluate someone’s recruiting classes as it relates to evaluations and bringing in talent, not giving them credit for guys that were in those classes because they transferred for whatever reason is insane, and just trying to fit a narrative. Trey Benson didn’t become more talented because Mario took a different job and he transferred.

Champ.

Trey Benson is a bad example. Putting aside development, Trey could have been here, but Mario made no effort to bring Trey with him to UM and he transfers to FSU in mid-January. Where was Mario's evaluation then?

An elite recruiter doesn’t have classes like 2022 and 2023

**** the rankings that’s Al Golden levels of production

You can get pretty far with relentless work ethic in this world though even if you’re not terribly bright

Oregon was #1 last year and we didn’t even make the playoffs. It’s not really a debate on who’s a better recruiter/coach

And yes I hate myself for typing that

I said it before but all this hand wringing over recruiting is pointless. The thing thats hilding us back is winning and producing draft picks. Cristobal last 3 full classes at Oregon, was #7,#13 and #6. He also had a good one going when he came here. Lanning went there off the back off that, plus nike NIL, Big Ten and also doing well on the field and took it to another level.

Thats the combination we need. The players we need are not shunning us for Tennessee or Ole Miss type. We are losing key recruits to UGA, Texas, Bama and Ohio. That's now the holy grail of recruiting.

We have to match their results on the field. Be playing in the post season against them.

This is down to coaching. We have consistently out recruited Michigan and ND. They were in the last 2 national title games, winning 1. So you can win big, especially in the ACC. Our problem including recruiting, has come from terrible hires especially on defense. That is where Cristobal needs to be highly criticized.

For me Cristobal tenure comes down to if Heatherman is the guy at DC. We have the players to win the ACC and make the playoffs. Its very simple now. NIL is fine but kids will get NIL at Ohio, UGA, Texas or Bama. They wanna go pro as well.

Add TCU (lost to UGA in 2023) and Washington (lost to Michigan in 2024) to your list. Washington is probably the best comp of who Miami could have been with Penix and the offense carrying a mediocre but opportunistic defense.

2023 was far better than 2022, but that's not saying much. I don't really give Mario much **** for 2022, it's impossible to put a class together in that amount of time, but I think there are 5 kids left on the roster from that class. That should be your senior and redshirt junior class on this current team. 5 are left.

2023 just had too much attrition and too many whiffs, to this point. But some of these kids are going to have major opportunities this season, and it's make or break time. If Samson can't get on the field, it's likely over. If Damari gets passed up, it's likely over. If Popo can't get on the field, it's likely over. If Ray Ray can't hold off Toney, it's definitely over. Malik Bryant, it's year 3 in your new position, drop a deuce or get off the can. If some/all of those kids turn a corner and become contributors, the class doesn't look bad. You do have 2 kids at the top who some are saying will be top half of round 1 picks. That's solid. But we signed 15 blue-chip kids, and in what should be their 3rd season, 7 of them are no longer here. Not great, Bob.

I'd be interested to go back and look at some other classes in our range from 2023....Oregon would be a good example, they were ranked 9th that year, and see how many of their kids from that class are still on the roster and/or starters. Is this a Miami problem, or a college football problem?

Jackson State hat under the table.

Him coming to Miami would be a big surprise, but nothing ground breaking

Yeah I know if there’s Mario criticism then you get tossed in a “hater” pile but I think all things considered Mario has recruited extremely well here

We’ve got no business consistently being a Top 10 ranked team and bordering on top 5 but Mario is legit as ****

I just think if someone is truly “elite” then there’s no debates and no mental gymnastics required

One thing with Mario is he’s obviously a guy that takes a long time to do things. That’s not always a bad thing

So one of the big things I’m looking at for this season is are those guys from the 2024 class stepping up? The Justin Scott’s yes but also the Dylan Day types

That 2024 class can fix a lot of things just hope the 2025 class doesn’t bite us in the *** but one thing at a time I suppose

I’ve been screaming it on here for a decade plus. Our fanbase is incredibly slow to comprehend what the pulse is as it relates to miami football, This leads to over 50% of the fanbase being extremely late to the party to “smelling the roses”. Hundreds of examples over the years. But now that the Columbus messiah is here we have the same situation on our hands. Mario has done one thing well since being here in comparison to all of the other failed coaches at miami…. Improved o line play

Luckily for him but not so lucky for us as fans…. Because of the o line improvement Mario has elevated the floor of this program from 6 wins to 8 win. Unfortunately for us fans he has done nothing else above average to raise the ceiling of the program from 10 wins…. Which it’s been for 20 years!!!

I personally would define where we are at with him as purgatory. 8+ wins annually but not good enough to make any true noise. Recruiting well but not even close to elite.

If he gets us mark Richt type results I will be thrilled but the problem/difference is he has a lifetime contract so we can’t even be excited about the next guy taking over like uga saw with Kirby taking over late in richts career

TrumpyCane could only imagine this board if Mario brought in a guy coming off an ACL tear

Everyone would have been crying Chaney would get carries taken away by a guy with one leg

You know, that really wasn’t an evaluation, it was a gamble. The kid was coming off a major ACL injury and when you’re talking about that, it’s a gamble. Now should Mario have made that gamble, yes, we can say that now in retrospect but at the time no one ******* knows, including you.

It was also pretty obvious he wasn’t trying to just bring all the Oregon guys with him. Now, if someone wants to say that’s stupid I’d completely agree.

Sure, but you are conflating the point. Mario should get credit for that eval, even though Mario literally left him behind when he had the most information about the player and his injury? That seems backwards to me.

"Gamble" is an oversimplification. It's a risk assessment. Injury and ability to make a full recovery on one side, sure. But player upside is on the other side. Mario made that assessment and decided the player was not worth bringing here. Implicit in that decision IS AN EVALUATION OF THE PLAYER. On a player he had the best and most recent intel on. So trying to give Mario credit for a good eval, on a player he didn't think was worth bringing with him to UM, is pretty silly to me.

And of course absolutely nobody knows for certain (including you). But unlike any of us, Mario gets paid millions to make the best call.
