It’s not necessarily a recruiting issue. If Pitt is heavily recruiting a 3 star DT, it makes me think “what do they know that we don’t” because they have an exceptional track record of identifying and developing DTs. I would be ok with getting lower rated DT prospects if we had a DT coach that has put multiple lower rated DT recruits into the NFL. We have neither elite recruiting nor an elite position coach.

The defensive side of the ball stunk I can't deny that. The class ranking was okay. Not the best. He made some portal moves I'm excited about. And a change of DC. That's called recognition bro. This is his 4th yr. We should be a playoff team with what we have. If we're not. I'll join you. But if we are ' you got to cool down. And I'll buy you a drink . We canes bro till we die. We on the same side. Just a difference of opinion on where we going n how we get there. Cool 🆒 😎. By the way you make investments for the long run. To be able to sustain.

I hear what you are saying but when I think of our team I always match us up against OSU or whoever is on top. I always ask myself if we play that team can we compete in the trenches. We all know what OSU will do to Pitts trenches. They would demolish and overwhelm those 3 stars with talent.

Our offensive line can match up with anyone in America. Anyone.

Let’s see how the DL comes out this year. We have a guy who NFL folks think will be a Top 10-15 pick. That’s a good start. If the front 7 gets pushed around all night by ND and UiF, I’ll join the mope party.

Our offense is where it need to be now, I agree. Gotta go out and replace Beck (again). The rest looks to on a sustained run of playoff+ level talent.

But I have to believe you're as tired of the annual apologies for the defense as all the rest of us. Yes, we may be talented enough at DE and CB (finally). But we're all praying Mario has our DTs, Ss, and Toure in bubble wrap until ND and they stay healthy and play to their potential all season long. Because just one injury or JAG performance out of our projected starters and we are in a world of hurt.
 
I have a question. In the time span that Mario was at Oregon... Did he recruit better there or here?

Of course. The defense last year was a ******* joke. That’s on Mario, he’s the head coach.

He’s paying Heatherman handsomely to come in and maximize the talent here, of which there is plenty. So let’s see how it gels on the field. Last year was unacceptable. But it’s over. Last year’s performance has nothing to do with what we’re going to see in about 6 weeks and through 12+ games. I’m excited to see how it goes.

We’ve been really good at DE. We got Scott that’s a big one. I like Jones and Simpson but holy **** we HAVE to have all 3 of those guys be hits and that sucks

We do not have an alpha proto type X wr yet, unless someone emerges. We have weapons but I wouldn't mind a Dre type or a projected top 10 guy. I don't think we have that IMO, unless Josh Moore is as crazy as people are saying.

I’d be interested to see that post, truly, not sarcastically. A quick glance over Cristobal’s classes at Oregon show the below draft picks (2021 still has some players in college)

5 seconds
1 third
3 fourths
2 fifths
3 sixths
2 sevenths

Maybe I’m misremembering but I have a hard time thinking that isn’t outpacing what we did in those cycles pretty easily.

Would you say Michigan could compete with Ohio State in the trenches ? I would say generally yes. But according to 247 since 2021 they didn’t recruit any 5 star players on DL . Highest ranked DL was an DE rated 95 (so mid-high 4 star). The biggest highest rated DT was a 92 (low 4 star). They don’t necessarily need once in a generation 5 star DTs to be competitive for a national title because they have exceptional player development. I think we can recruit DL at least as well as Michigan does but I have no confidence we can develop them. The reason Cristobal needs 5 star talent is that those players are already elite.

Where is Cristobal’s Greg Rosseau? His closest equivalent is Bain, but Bain took a huge step backwards last year. He was a nonfactor. We are all are hoping his regression was due to not being in playing shape after his injury, but there is also the possibility that other teams simply figured out how to neutralize him and he hasn’t improved since his first season.
