Worse power 5 coaches than Shannon and golden

You can't quantify how bad at coaching you have to be to fall on your face at miami. There is no reason to lose less than 9 games here ever. Weak division, best recruiting base in the nation.[/QUOTE

No reason to lose less than 9 games a year? Even at wake forest or Vanderbilt a coach who consistently goes 3-9 will be fired.

ya i meant win less than 9

Actually Shannon is a better coach than what you are putting out there. He excelled at each position he coached as an assistant and DC. He was one of the top available hires as a DC in the country before getting the HC position at Miami. After only receiving a 4 yr contract for 4 mil and nothing to pay Top Tier OC's and DC's, today one wouldn't be surprised by the results. But one would have to assume the success he would have had if given the money to hire coordinators. Randy consistently brought in recruiting classes ranked in the top 25. Three members of his second recruiting class—Marcus Forston, Marcus Robinson, and Sean Spence—were recognized by College Football News as freshman All-Americans.

On January 5, 2015, the University of Florida announced that the Florida Gators' new head coach Jim McElwain had hired Shannon as the Gators' associate head coach, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. McElwain stated that Shannon was at the top of his list for potential assistants, and media sports commentators opined that Shannon would be a significant recruiting asset for McElwain and the Gators.

Today we can admit that the last regime failed to develop the talent on those teams. Some day we will also admit that the Administration failed to pay for qualified Coordinators and Assistants so that Shannon could succeed. Truth be told, the Administration contributed a lot more money for Golden to be successful.

That's a flatout exaggeration, it was well known how many bridges shannon burnt during his recruiting days in miami and i'd challenge to look at his body of work regarding camps and not laugh. He'll get a few kids because he's from SFL and because he's a black coach (see teddy bridgewater) but he wouldn't even rank in the top 20 of coaches who recruit SFL.

There are no excuses for Randy he's a decent position coach and coordinator but he's not a HC at all. Name 1 thing he excelled at as a HC....or better yet name one coordinator under shannon that excelled. Part of a HC's job and contract negotiations is to inspire the Admin to spend on quality support staff, with the money he was given he could've at least afforded 1-2 solid hires. He was terrible at player development, terrible at recruiting (don't even mention his 1st class which was 80% failure), terrible at motivating players (see randy shannons doghouse), terrible at game management, and terrible at roster management (see the roster golden inherited).

And then there was the last game in orange bowl vs UVA....

The guy at Illinos was pretty F'ing bad. You could make an argument Shannon wasn't given the resources, but still overlooks his shortcomings. That being said, you have to be hard pressed to find a bigger failure than Al. There is another post along the same lines of this where some pointed out he was a good person(Malcolm, Artie's Mom), but that doesn't absolve him of the historical failure that was his tenure. Easily one of the worst HC's of all-time. Never should have had the job. Hat tip to Donna Shalala.

Go Canes!

Terrible at player development, terrible at recruiting???

In 2008, Shannon's squad had a five-game winning streak, which was the longest for the Hurricanes since 2005. Freshman linebacker Sean Spence was named the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and kicker Matt Bosher was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award given to the nation's best kicker. Four freshmen - LB Sean Spence, DT Marcus Forston, DE Marcus Robinson, PR/KR Travis Benjamin - earned freshman All-America honors. Miami also ranked No. 7 nationally in pass defense, 25th in tackles for loss and 28th overall in total defense yielding 317.56 yards per game. The 2008 Hurricanes also were among top teams in the ACC in punt returns (first), pass defense (second), scoring offense (third), net punting (fourth) and tackles for loss (fourth).

In his six seasons as defensive coordinator, the Hurricanes had seven All-America players (and he tutored eight other All-Americans as a position coach). As a head coach and defensive coordinator, he's coached 14 defensive players who were selected in the first round of the NFL draft.

Most importantly Shannon's team has had success off the field. When the Hurricanes took the field in the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl, 13 of the 18 seniors on the roster had received their degrees. All of Shannon's teams have continued to uphold to UM's academic success off the field. His UM football teams have achieved NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) of 978, 977, 969 and 966, which have all ranked in the top 10 nationally. The 978 APR in the 2010 APR report was tied for the sixth highest rate in the country. The 977 APR in the 2009 report was the 7th-highest rate in the country out of 119 Bowl-Subdivision football programs. Those rates also were the second highest in the Atlantic Coast Conference and highest among all schools in Florida.

In 2009, Shannon guided his team to the program's best mark since the 2005 campaign as Miami made its 35th overall bowl appearance, finishing 9-4 overall and 5-3 in ACC play. Four Hurricanes - Allen Bailey, Matt Bosher, Jason Fox and Brandon Harris - earned first team All-ACC honors, and Miami is one of only nine teams to rank in the top 35 in both total offense and total defense.

See as Alonzo Highsmith said “Sometimes I think maybe the administration doesn’t want football to get back to the national brand. We’re where we want to be academically, climbing higher and higher. We don’t want football to be at the forefront. Let’s give them the minimal amount to play and put them in [Sun Life Stadium] on Saturday.

“We’ve been driving this same car 30-something years since I left. Now the tires are all flat. Now the paint is gone. But yet we keep putting new drivers in the same car — Al Golden, Randy Shannon — and expecting it to go the same 200 mph. Our problem is the foundation and the direction of the program. Are we going to reinvest in it? Don’t tell me this bull crap about, ‘We won in the past like this.’ That’s like Richard Petty trying to win with race cars he ran 30 years ago. You can’t do it.

“If we don’t fix what’s ailing this program right now, 10 years from now, we could be where FIU and those programs are. If we don’t fix this foundation, it won’t matter who’s coaching."

You obviously are new to recruiting. Do you know most of the flak Randy got from local coaches were because he didn't bow down and pay coaches and recruits so called reps to come to the U. Easy to recruit, you will be surprised at what Randy did to keep this program from sinking faster than it did because the administration wouldn't listen to him.

Gotta understand in 08 it was so much easier to recruit because we were still the u and kids grew up watching those butch teams.

I kniw that part ur right but he pulled 08 easier based off a recentpast. And nevin i guess helped as well

Well if you credit the success from the past then how can you deny Randy when he was a major part of the success of that "recent past"?

08 was no easier than it is now. You will always have the majority of recruits within the state want to attend the big 3. Ans Nevin's role is so exaggerated. Some players recieve houses and their parents get jobs that fool was paying for burgers and strippers and we think he played a role. USC was hooking up Reggie Bush.

RS issue is that he was a 1st timeHC. He should have never been offered the job as a 1st time HC. It was alot he had to learn, however he still put players in the league and graduated his players. That's why he was fired he had a talented team and they underachieved. I mean the top coaches all had success at built up programs before they came to power houses (i.e. Urb at Utah, Saban at Michigan St., and even Chip at CMU/Ciincy).

I disagree that Randy shouldn't have been hired as a first time head coach. There are plenty of examples, **** every veteran HC has a first time. Successful people have talented people surrounding them. It's basic knowledge in any business and this administration failed totally. For the record Randy actually over achieved given the circumstances.

Terrible at player development, terrible at recruiting???

Yes.

Go look over the 2008-2010 recruiting classes and try not to throw up in your mouth. Miami 2008 Football Commits use the drop down feature.

Did i mention he ruined two Mr. Florida Football Qb's as well?

Randy Shannon was a bum. Just as bad as Golden. Make all the excuses you want. He burned a bunch of bridges with local high schools, played clear favorites with players and lost...a lot. The only reason he got a job was because the cheap *** administration wouldn't spend on a good coach.

But those days are over. The new president cares about football. The new coach is a proven winner. Everything is moving in the right direction.

Log off Randy you're embarrasing yourself.

08-10 weren't bad classes. A lot of those players played at least 3 years in the nfl and some are still there. CFL you're exaggerating. He underachieved but he brought in talent. Man all 3 of his 2010 tight ends are in the nfl. How many of those olinemen are in the league? Wideouts? Recruiting wasn't the issue. Becoming elite was. We were still relying on his 2010 and 11 recruits in 2014.

Harris came to University of Miami to compete for the starting quarterback position with former Mr. Florida award winner Robert Marve. Harris and Marve split time as starters, with Marve starting 11 of 13 games. Marve subsequently transferred out of Miami, leaving Harris the full-time starter heading into the 2009 season. During the 2008 season, Harris led Miami on two comeback drives against the Duke Blue Devils and the Virginia Cavaliers. Harris finished the season with 1,195 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions as the Hurricanes wound up 7-6.

In a July 31, 2009, interview with Dan Le Batard, Harris told the world that he will pick up his Heisman trophy wearing a pink suit and with a "pimp cup" in hand. He also earned himself a new nickname in this interview: Afro Butterfly.

Harris who is currently signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

How did he ruin two Mr. Football?

There you have it... If the cheap *** Administration would not spend on the HC you know they didn't spend on quality assistants. End of story. Randy good coach with out the support of the Administration.

The current Administration has obviously learned from past mistakes and have graciously provided the funding needed to Richt. Now you will see how proper funding equate to successful coaching and wins on the field.
