Willis Mcgahee

Yea I'll never understand why Gore didn't play against Ohio State when Mcgahee went out. Everyone knew Gore would only stay 3 years anyways (if he didn't get hurt in 2003 of course). For that matter, why wasn't Gore the 2nd string back going into that game. He could've gotten 10 carries or so in a backup role that game. I still can't believe we lost that game.

Back to Mcgahee, my favorite running back. He should've won the Heisman that year. He had 6 td's against VT early in the 2nd half. He could've walked in for 7 on that pick 6 by Payton to Dorsey.

The best part of that Mcgahee screen pass is right when he's around midfield and it looks like he's going to house it. The crowd went crazy. I don't think it had been that loud since the mid 90's.
Wasn’t Gore hurt also?

Maaaan McGahee is what everyone woulda been comparing AP to when he came out of Oklahoma....fvck Ohio state for that intentional knee shot smfh.

I keep forgetting how disgustingly fast Willis and Gore were pre kne injuries..
Ain’t never seen nothing quite Like AP..That HS film is one of those that make u question the legality of allowing him to even play at that level. Could’ve easily gone to the League straight out of HS imo. Came into college ran that team on a title run and ran for **** near 2k.

I never saw gore live before injury. Saw “thick” Gore that 04 szn live and I just remember as a kid being amazed how compact his lower body was. From YouTube pre highlights pre injury gores 1 cut acceleration was on another level. Willis at 6-1 225 plus was also on another level

Just watching that video the long TD against Pitt by Mcgahee was incredible. To see an opening that wasn't there and go 80 yards or whatever it was. It tied the game up. I can't recall seeing anyone else make a play like that. Another reason Mcgahee should've won the Heisman is 2002 was a tough schedule. We didn't play any great teams, but we played like 6-7 good teams. Some of those teams could've beaten almost anyone that year. By 2002, the refs were against us a lot. I remember it being bad officiating at that Pitt game people in the stands were complaining. Sean Taylor had an amazing punt return TD on a reverse the first time we touched the ball.

He was the best RB in Canes history based on pure talent (bold take, I know). A **** shame we never saw him at full strength after that hit against OSU.

The power, speed, vision combo was different with him.

I wouldn't say it is bold as it's accurate.

Now on to the pros, it's a different story, but if he hadn't been injured who knows what could've been.

I think the issue with Gore was whether his knee was heathy enough for him to play In the Championship game. Certainly he would have been an upgrade over Payton if healthy.

Loudest I ever heard the ob was 94 with Carlos, 00 with Shockey and 02 with Willis
That’s a great observation. I didn't get to enjoy the 2000 Shockey catch. I was so mad we fumbled the possession before when we probably could’ve ran the clock out. But it was really loud. I read on the Wikipedia page that the OB around perhaps 2001-2002 had work done so that in effect the sounds of stomping on the bleachers weren’t nearly as loud. That’s why I was a little shocked how loud it got during the Mcgahee screen. The program was averaging almost 70,000 fans a game in 2002. I remember a game against BC in 2002 it was over 70,000 and fans were stomping on the bleachers and it still wasn't that loud. It seemed like after the work was done, the only time the OB got really loud was when UM would break a big play and the crowd would roar. It just wasn't deafening those last few years for a big defensive play for example.

That fumble made me think we were cursed... Especially when they scored. That drive showed me what Dorsey was about, introduced me to Shockey and showed me more why moss was my fave receiver

Amazing how Carlos Jones...A) Will always be remembered for that play and B)Went from AA candidate to a total washout. You couldnt tell anyone in 1994 that he wasnt going to be a first round pick that next year.

I bet if CIS was around after 2001 people would have been like “man it’s going to be really tough to replace Clinton portis’ production”

That was a great run. Another favorite was the screen pass against BC, looked about 75+ yards, and tackled at the BC 1 or 2.

You know for all these years I thought Jason gathers caught that screen and willis ran it in on the next play.

I was at that game with my Florida grad father and brother, who's wife went to med school there, in their season ticket seats surrounded by Florida homers while wearing my Canes gear. Nasty looks abounded. When Willis took off I jumped up and yelled Go! Go! Go! You should have seen the looks from around me. My brother just said -Man that guy is fast! Who is that guy?! We owned them that game. Probably my favorite Canes game I've ever been to.

Gaethers remains one of the all time mysteries to me. Guy had it all and wasn’t an unmotivated ******* who wasted his opportunities. Still can’t believe he didn’t find a nice niche in the league.
