Why the lack of respect for Mark Richt

I liked Richt as a person. I hated Jon as QB coach. If he hadn't hired Jon, things would've been better for everyone involved.

What if..

Lashlee and King existed as a pair in 2017 instead of 2020 and Richt replaced Jon and Malik with that pair?

Miami definitely beats Pitt to finish the regular season unbeaten and likely makes the playoffs regardless of the results of the ACC championship game.

Right’s players and evals got Manny the HC job. TVD was a Richt eval.

Nothing but respect and admiration for the man. All around good guy who gave a lot to this university and then even more when he left his buyout on the table. Wish him nothing but the absolute best and I also wish I had known about the off the field stuff as I know I would've been less critical at the time. Too bad he didn't some here 15 years earlier.

People act like Mark was given a ton of money to go hire a staff. CMR was the real QB coach. His son was just taking scraps of leftover money from other coaches.

And this is what people need to realize. Would Richt have gone the same route staff wise if the admin invested the way it is now? And IN SPITE of all of that, he accomplished a great deal ON THE FIELD, not just as a person, not just as a guy who helped with the buyout. He had us in the hunt for titles (division, conference and national) by year TWO! The things he accomplished ON THE FIELD in his first two years, we can only DREAM it now.

False information
And what he was able to accomplish here? I don’t think it is fair to group him in with Randy Shannon, Al Golden, Manny Diaz and so far, even Mario. I find myself having to remind folks of this in different threads.

9-4 in year one with a bowl win over a ranked opponent.
10-3 in year two with wins over the 13th and 3rd ranked team back to back.
Coach of the year
First and only ACC champ appearance And straight out Division title.

All the while dealing with wife having cancer and then stricken with a debilitating disease and NO RESOURCES. Had to pay for much of the indoor facility.

Were things perfect? **** no, but my God, how many of us would kill to have what he gave us instead of what has been endured since he left?

He PROVED that you can win here.
He cared more about his son being a coach than the welfare of Miami offense, so FUQ EM

15+ years as a HC but his coaching tree is a dead stick. Hard to fathom how a coach with that much college success could have so few successful proteges.

He was also a bad talent evaluator at the end. His 9 win season, followed by a 10 win season was almost exclusively Al Golden players. When his own players were the majority of the roster, they won 7 games. And his QB recruiting? Jack Allison, Kevin Olsen, Jarren Williams? My god it was a disaster.

It's not that he was a bad hire, I think there was plenty of reason to believe he would rebuild UM. However, whether it was because CFB had passed him by or if was because the illness was affecting him earlier than he was willing to admit, he simply didn't lay down the foundation we hoped he would.

But for all his faults he did something to help UM more than I ever expected - walking away without a massive buyout. For that he gets a standing ovation from me.

All fair criticism. I would have liked to seen him at Miami before UGA threw him to the curb. I personally think that broke him. I was hoping it ****ed him off so much he wanted revenge on the dawgs, health and being handcuffed by admin quelled any of that happening.

Richt was a great CEO type. Unfortunately his health and his desire to call plays/hire his son was his downfall in the short time he was here. Had he just recruited and hired good coordinators who could run their systems, with a backing by the administration, we would most likely be a top 10 team year in year out. Had he had his health as well…
