Who Runs This Scheme?

I saw a thread a few days ago about other teams running this same scheme we have. Who else runs the same scheme and what different things do they do to make it effective? If in fact it can be effective.

To answer your question, I've discovered through the collective coaching wisdom of this board that our current scheme is kind of a hybrid of several different ones (which is why it's so hard to pin down, and part of the reason we can't seem to run it well.) Elements of a straight-up 3-4, elements of 4-3 flex (both over and under) and regular 4-3. Current teams run PARTS of what we do - Mich. St., Alabama, USC - but if you want a real view of the defense, it's probably best to look at Golden's old UVA and Temple defenses for reference.

The godfather of this D is Al Groh, trying to google where he is currently employed. If you find out let us know

From a statistically standpoint what rankings did Golden have at UVA when he was there? Was it this bad?

Jeremy Pruitt @ UGA is the first that comes to mind, Saban runs it, and Carroll ran it at USC, as well. The difference is that ALL of those coaches have a **** clue about defensive football. Our guy(s) don't. We continue to try and run this 2 Gap bullsh!t when we can't do it effectively. Saban and Carroll have came out and BOTH have said that it is really hard to run it in College because the DL kids are generally smaller, don't take up much space, and it can become really complex (especially since you don't have but X amount of time to put all of the wrinkles in.) They both uses more of the 1 Gap versions of the 3-4. Therefore you can be in attack mode at the snap, not looking like an 10 month old squatting to take a dump (frog stance).

eh - perhaps not. From most anecdotal accounts, the Al Groh 3-4 is difficult to install and complicated to run, and perhaps at this stage even a little outdated. After his days at UVA, Groh was the GT DC and was released, mainly for the reasons just stated. We're seeing some of that here as well.

The frog stance is one thing that really bothers me. Does anyone have any video or pictures of what we do scheme wise and what it should look like?

Completely and utterly incorrect.

The only other team I know of in college that runs it is Notre Dame, although not sure anymore. They ran it when Alabama ran a train on them in the title game. Bob Diaco coached under Groh right after Folden left for Temple.

In this day and age?

Nobody.

There's a reason for that.

Yep. Nobody runs the defense the way we do. Nobody. I've watched all teams who are predominantly 3-4 bases. Not one of them runs their 3-4 like we run ours. Not one.

Dude, All of the afore mentioned schools runs a 3-4 scheme. I don't just make **** up, like alot of posters here. They just slide the front and run a 1 gap version of it to make it look like a 4-3. ****, Pruitt ran it when he worked for Saban! Why on earth do you think a kid like Leonard Floyd is listed as a OLB when his hand is in the dirt 90% of the time. If you don't believe me, look it up. Pruitt was at Alabama undes Saban, took the FSU DC job, and now he's at UGA.

Go to about 1:53 of this video, and check out Lamar Miller's reaction to a question about Groh's 3-4:

I think it's amazing that after 4 years most of our fanbase still can't figure out the defense.
