Whew!! Some thoughts on this FSU victory...

K9 I feel you on all your points…Here’s my 2 cents:

1) Why are we SO AFRAID to MAN UP against our opposition(when they practice against our WR everyday)

2) Why did we bring a SAFETY BLITZ when in da position of protecting a one score lead in da 4th Qtr wit less than 3min in da game???

I think the answer to question one is why we blitzed so much. Perhaps the secondary is that down bad that they're trying to force as much pressure as possible. Only thing I can think of

We are ranked 108...

There is no way not to roast them.

The gap between the hype and their actual performance is as wide as a Martian desert.

The rankings are the rankings but Heatherman has been equally responsible, IMO. His third down defenses are stale. The long TD to Duce, the coverage was terrible but the call was worse.

When things get uncomfortable Mensah is shaky. He has weird moments. Tonight he was off bad, there was horrible ball placement and his decision making was off . Toney and Mallory saved our asses.
Also saved our ***...a few big catches...Daylyn Upshaw. Few big time drive extenders and a big time catch on one of those Mensah al dente deep balls. Cutch catch down the stretch. Nearly made a crazy drive extender late in regulation, too.

OK, I think I finally got my breath. Miami wins 43-35 in double OT versus an FSU team that many people thought couldn't roll over and play dead at this stage. I'm more relieved than euphoric.

It's alright to say it, Miami got away with one tonight at Hard Rock

With that said, Miami is the better team, but for much of the game tonight they were not. That's the reality. And quite frankly they played a very uneven game tonight. I still think their best football is ahead of them -- but am I just being a blind optimist? This team still has a lot to shore up.

But you know what they say about winning -- it beats losing. And now it's three straight versus the Noles, that always feels good regardless of the state of their programs. Rivarly wins matter, always

Some other thoughts on this game..

-- Darian Mensah had good numbers (24 for 24, 326 yards, 3 TD' and 1 INT) on paper, but in watching this game, I thought this was the worst of his UM career. Now, maybe it says something about the standard we have for him, or how well he played. But that interception on the 1st drive of the 2nd half was a killer(and he had room to run for about 6-10 yards). That was a bad decision.

Other times, it looked like he held the ball too long. But hey, he was steady later in the game when it counted.

-- Javion Mallory has become running back 1A. His vision and ability to run to daylight is rare. Tell me his overtime TD run didn't have you thinking of Frank Gore vs FSU in 2004 on that Friday night that was the game winner)

-- Malachi Toney, do I need to say all that much. Big time players make big time plays, in big time games. Honestly, I thought we should've fed him more as the offense bogged down at times. Call him Jerry West, he is 'Mr Clutch'. His impact, every game, goes beyond the numbers.

- OK, now, the bad. I think the world of our defensive coordinator, Corey Hetherman, but I still can't get over the defense/pressure he brought at 28-21 with about 2:40 left. As Duce Robinson was going down the sideline for the tying score, I had Chafie Fields flashbacks.

Im not a coordinator, Im just a fan (I realize that) but my view is that you rush four, drop seven and let Ashton Daniels make a few throws before dialing up anything to heat him up. To get beat like that on the first play was mind-boggling, when you had the whole field to defend was puzzling.

-- Then in the second OT, I realize our players and maybe our coaches are too young to know who Tom Jackson was. But what did he say about defending 'hail mary' throws? KNOCK IT DOWN!! Our guys, even on that last INT, we're not doing that.

I will say this, the Dline got really good pressure in the 2nd OT.

Also, earlier in the game, the screen game -- a Norvell specialty- was killing Miami. They looked totally unprepared for a facet of the FSU offense that you knew was coming.

So that's it. I need to sip a Coors Light (the Rocky Mountain sensation) and relax a bit.
Agree with everything you pointed out.

Some continue to harp on Hetherman’s deficiency toward the screen last night. Sorry, but every successful screen they had was a recognition issue by personnel, not a Hetherman issue. Not sure what was visible on the broadcast but in person it was painful to watch. 100% on the guys on the field and zero chance Hetherman did not attempt to correct them on the sideline.

Completely agree on the blitz call late in the 4th. I understand the need to force him to make a decision but sending a guy, especially from the side of the field their only legit big play threat was was risky. Make them earn it.

I have faith in Mensah but we’re fooling ourselves if we think people aren’t taking a page out of Wake’s 2nd half approach against us. Said it then, say it now, that’s a legit football team which is well coached. Not that he was mistake prone or bad but the wheels started turning in that 2nd half. Sans the 4th quarter and OT, he struggled at times and it was very visible in person. Interestingly enough I had a discussion about him with someone and the opinion was the near perfect start to the season for him wasn’t a good thing. He’s a relentless worker and a perfectionist. That person thought he was looking for perfection/maximization on every play which we know isn’t possible. I think that mentality may speak to several of those times last night where taking what’s there is the best option. Had quite a few opportunities to get positive yardage at times where it could have gotten us back on track and didn’t. Again, don’t mistake what I’m saying as he’s our guy and there’s not 1 guy on Saturday I’d change him for.

Great write up as usual and I think this team will clean up some of the issues.

Fsu kicked our asses in the trenches most of the night.
Losing our starting RG last week is going to hurt us down the stretch.

Also does Scott ever get pressure on the qb? Moten is shot out of a cannon but Scott just doesn’t do much imo.
Maybe I’m missing something but he doesn’t make impact plays for a former 5 star. Hes solid but wish he gave us a bit mire

jps, it's funny you say that about Mensah and the near perfect game he threw vs WF. I think that streak of completed passes may have impacted some of his decisions late in the game. It's human nature, I can't even blame him if that was the case

This was a game that after halftime, you have to understand this is NOT a blowout, so every yard and first down meant something. Knowing that, it was inexcusable that decision to throw that pass into the end zone for that INT. It was an awful decision. Run for 5-6 yards, chalk it up as staying ahead of the chains and get to another play. To put it into boxing parlance, sometimes you go for the knockout, other times you box your way to a decision victory .

Back to your point, it reminds me of one of my favorite Bill Parcells/ Phil Simms stories. There were games where Tuna would tell Simms basically, "Hey Phil, we're throwing the ball deep this week, don't be afraid to take chances and drive the ball. If you throw an interception or two, don't worry about. You're not doing Checkdown Charlie this game."

Simms has said those games took all the pressure of him and allowed him to play free.

How many games has Toney won us in a year and a half here?

The guy flat out wins us every game. Mario needs to line up the best *** in Miami for him after this season.

Mallory is fast becoming RB1. He’s dynamic and powerful. We all love Fletcher but Mallory has another gear. A great one two punch.

Dunnigan over Thornton please

That’s great about tuna and Simms.

All a process no doubt but it was frustrating. Especially frustrating where the game is in this day and age where there’s more 4th down chances taken at non game deciding times than ever. Take a few or a handful and keep the game moving in a positive direction.

He’s a talented kid and a great kid. I think he’ll get to that consistently.

yeah, basically the modern game has you in 4 down territory right around mid-field.So that should absolutely change how you make play-calls and as a player, the decisions you make on early downs...

Barkate's best trait is at intermediate distances. gotta feed him and lofton in the short game more

like was Mensah going for big plays because he thought he had a chance to improve his heisman odds? need to be better

Agree on **** near everything you said. especially the critique of Heatherman. We do blitz at strange times

Just watched the ND-BYU game. We are going to have a difficult time offensively in that game. Moving them off the LOS in run game, and giving Mensah time to read progressions. Dawson is going to have to really build a quick pass game strategy into the game plan, with occasionally shot plays deep to try and catch them and keep somewhat honest.

honestly, I think thats what this offense should be (as its foundation)
