Whew!! Some thoughts on this FSU victory...

Holy ****
I was at a pop warner game in San Diego and when I saw 14-14 at half
I knew something was up
I can’t believe the highlights I just watched

wtf were we doing?????????
It’s very apparent Mario has not been able to figure out bye week and how to be prepared and focused after it.

Canes survived and by default will be #1 but not for long if they don’t get their shot straightened out!!!

To add to @k9cane thoughts
-I know we are thin but Thornton can not be the single high safety in cover 1
-I have had this complaint for years but on O we play with zero urgency in too many moments in games. We finally played with energy and we took the lead.
-Our LBs are great in run fits but struggle in coverage (still)
- with so many injuries on D, you can tell we aren’t getting too creative in our calls. (Worried about busts…we are still getting them)
- in past seasons this is a Mario loss.
Agreed, no issue with the cover 1 call there...in fact we had two guys in decent postion and whiffed on what should be an easy tackle. Enough has been said about the personal on that call tho. Scary seeing zero back there.

The zero urgency was beyond belief at the end of regulation, zero effort to get into FG range and end things. We played like we were the road dog hoping to drag it to OT. We very nearly paid the price.

We have a top5 talented roster but we don’t have elite trenches this year

I think not going for more olineman in the portal may cost us like not good for more dbs in 2024 did
Which seems stupid as ***
Like I’ve said before
Your spending 40 mil
Give or take and you have it right in front of you and then you are unwilling to spend another 1-2 mil to shore up Oline????????
Don’t get that for the life of me

When things get uncomfortable Mensah is shaky. He has weird moments. Tonight he was off bad, there was horrible ball placement and his decision making was off . Toney and Mallory saved our asses.

I love Mensah. Absolutely wonderful kid and player. Deserves his flowers.

And this isn't abnormal for QBs, but he doesn't like getting knocked on his ***. Happened at Wake and he fell apart in the 2H. Ultimately, with last years OL he probably runs away with the Heisman and a Natty.

It would be of massive help for us to be able to play Mario bully ball (which a lot of fans stupidly pan despite the fact that it A) helps your defense B) protects the QB C) controls the ball with a lead D) keeps opponents offenses from getting in rhythm.

Mensah is tremendous, an elite talent; but he's not Vince Young or Lamar Jackson or Joe Burrow and I would like it if the offense was more designed around the run game. Easier said than done with these interior linemen of course....

- I can nitpick about Dawson, but it’s hard to blame him when ur QB plays like that. His int, accuracy, decision making, and pocket presence were not up to standard. Offensive line is mid, everybody got beat multiple times throughout the game. Why does it feel like nobody is ever open at the top of Mensah’s drop backs?

- I think overall Heathermen’s game plan was fine, until he tried to be cute and FSU took full advantage every single time. Defensive line, we are missing those technicians on the edge. Blount is terrible with his hands, dude just bull rushes. Wilson is fine, but outside of him theirs 0 difference makers on the edge.

I’m a Heatherman fan, but today was easily his worst called game at UM.

We don’t need to blitz a safety or nickel every single play. And for the love of God can we stop trying to make Toure drop into deep coverage.
He called the game as he always does, Norvell is just a decent enough of a playcaller to take advantage. Hetherman is not the savant most make him out to be.

OK, I think I finally got my breath. Miami wins 43-35 in double OT versus an FSU team that many people thought couldn't roll over and play dead at this stage. I'm more relieved than euphoric.

It's alright to say it, Miami got away with one tonight at Hard Rock

With that said, Miami is the better team, but for much of the game tonight they were not. That's the reality. And quite frankly they played a very uneven game tonight. I still think their best football is ahead of them -- but am I just being a blind optimist? This team still has a lot to shore up.

But you know what they say about winning -- it beats losing. And now it's three straight versus the Noles, that always feels good regardless of the state of their programs. Rivarly wins matter, always

Some other thoughts on this game..

-- Darian Mensah had good numbers (24 for 24, 326 yards, 3 TD' and 1 INT) on paper, but in watching this game, I thought this was the worst of his UM career. Now, maybe it says something about the standard we have for him, or how well he played. But that interception on the 1st drive of the 2nd half was a killer(and he had room to run for about 6-10 yards). That was a bad decision.

Other times, it looked like he held the ball too long. But hey, he was steady later in the game when it counted.

-- Javion Mallory has become running back 1A. His vision and ability to run to daylight is rare. Tell me his overtime TD run didn't have you thinking of Frank Gore vs FSU in 2004 on that Friday night that was the game winner)

-- Malachi Toney, do I need to say all that much. Big time players make big time plays, in big time games. Honestly, I thought we should've fed him more as the offense bogged down at times. Call him Jerry West, he is 'Mr Clutch'. His impact, every game, goes beyond the numbers.

- OK, now, the bad. I think the world of our defensive coordinator, Corey Hetherman, but I still can't get over the defense/pressure he brought at 28-21 with about 2:40 left. As Duce Robinson was going down the sideline for the tying score, I had Chafie Fields flashbacks.

Im not a coordinator, Im just a fan (I realize that) but my view is that you rush four, drop seven and let Ashton Daniels make a few throws before dialing up anything to heat him up. To get beat like that on the first play was mind-boggling, when you had the whole field to defend was puzzling.

-- Then in the second OT, I realize our players and maybe our coaches are too young to know who Tom Jackson was. But what did he say about defending 'hail mary' throws? KNOCK IT DOWN!! Our guys, even on that last INT, we're not doing that.

I will say this, the Dline got really good pressure in the 2nd OT.

Also, earlier in the game, the screen game -- a Norvell specialty- was killing Miami. They looked totally unprepared for a facet of the FSU offense that you knew was coming.

So that's it. I need to sip a Coors Light (the Rocky Mountain sensation) and relax a bit.
I had exactly the same thoughts.
Defensive backfield was a mess after spouses left. He really is the vocal leader out there. X was rusty, the D was caught over aggressive with the screens and then out of place with the soft cover 3 zone. Mack got lit up out there by a less talented WR room than Clemson had. Bryce was a little bit lost at Safety too. Need to get continuity back with that group in their natural positions.

I need to rewatch the film to look at the offensive line but the play calling was suspect. We should have run the rock all over this defense and Mallory needs more touches. Fletcher and him should have both been over 125 each.

Relative to the material we have on this roster, it’s as bad as we’ve looked under Mario. Very concerning, especially coming off a Bye week, though that’s commonplace.

Equally concerning, was Dawson calling the game like we’re scared of FSU. We tested none of the run concepts UL ate them alive with last week. It’s the same old **** every week from him. His calls leading into and coming out of the half were mind boggling. I look forward to his sarcastic remarks at his presser.
He worked in a couple of the power pitch plays Iowa State been running to great success (I have been quietly hoping they would find a way to our playbook).

Only issue is was they went to the backs that weren’t best suited for that play imo and we really couldn’t play that back because game situation dictated a different skill set.

We can agree to disagree…you think he’s great, I don’t and that’s ok. Even if Poyser played, the game would be called the same.
What do you disagree about with his play calling? Player development? His Lb coaching skills? His inability to adapt to injuries or in game situations?

He’s been elite considering the injuries this year. Numbers alone from last year he turned around what was as historically bad defense in 2024 to one of the best defensive teams in the country by playoff time. This year we had this year we are one of the best defensive teams and we’ve had a crazy injury streak in defense.

The DBs would have been in the right places to make plays. They were all out of place on their coverage in the zone. That’s all communication. You had 3 different people in different spots.
