Our boys played their worst game and still found a way to get the W. Seems like we were feeling ourselves after Clemson and ate the cheese. Just gotta get locked in and cancel the outside noise.
Here are some of my thoughts from what I saw sitting at the game.
First, on offense. Mensah wasn't his best. Bunch of plays with open guys underneath but he would hold on to the ball way too long. Not sure if he just wasn't seeing the field well or what. Bad reads. Could've easily finished the game with 2-3 INT's. if he was just more focused on big plays and trying to win the game with one throw rather than taking what they were giving him. Also, had opportunities to pick up yards with his feet but refused to run when there was open field in front of him. Running backs missed some reads and left plays on the field. Saw plenty of plays where RB's were either tap dancing waiting for the play to develop or just hitting the wrong hole. Mallory was fantastic in the 2nd half. Without question our best RB tonight. Our OL had their moments but more times than not they weren't winning their 1on1's. Pass pro wasn't the best. Allowed way too much pressure for my liking and didn't seem to be getting a lot of push, if any, against fsu d-line.
Now, for the defense. Not sure where to start, but it was our worst performance to date -- from the coaching to the players. For the most part, a second late or step too slow. fsu kept beating us with the same screen plays. Didn't matter if it was screen left or screen right, they feasted off of it tonight. Our D-line got pushed around for much of the night. We had our moments but for the most of the night they looked like the bullies. Throughout regulation we couldn't muster much pressure unless we sent extra people on blitzes. Luckily, in OT our guys were able to peel their ears back and get after it. We were e able to get pressure without blitzing. On one play, we even got after their QB with a 2 man rush. LB's were solid. Great against the run, but not so great in coverage (and that may be putting it mildly). DB's... man oh man. Seemed like their receivers were open all night. Couldn't tackle. Couldn't cover. Allowed way too many big plays.
If there's a silver lining to tonight, it's Mike Norvell will continue to be their corch for the foreseeable future. HAHA!!!
In all seriousness, the biggest positive that I take away from tonight is what I stated earlier. We could've easily been part of the upset madness that occurred today. However, despite all the ugliness we saw in our play, we found a way to pull it off.
On to Pitt. We're still undefeateed, Will probably go into next week the #1 team in the country.
GO CANES!!!!
