Didn't eat at Cotton's. Knew about because I met Phil at pre-game brunch before WVA in '86. It was on his business card which I still have. I drove from No.VA. Always had to drive through Cumberland on I-70, I guess to get to Morgantown or Pitt. I think I went both places for games twice. Used to see a sign for Cotton's driving thru the town on the interstate. It was a long time business in Cumberland I think. In the 1950's, University of Maryland was a real national power. A lot of their players came from Cumberland. We used to go to Cumberland and adjacent areas, like Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, to get our players. Mostly working class white kids, sometimes from miners' or steelworkers' families. Those industries were much bigger and the boys were tough and used to physical sports.
I guess the restaurant closed down after Phil died. We had some good teams in the mid-50's, the Don Bosseler era. Many of our recruits had probably never seen ocean before, I'm sure Miami was like a paradise when they came down from Cumberland, small towns in Western PA, etc.. We'd often have a many Pittsburgh area players as U-Pitt, which was quite a rivalry for us back then.
