When you guys watched Mendoza, did you really think "Oh, yeah, this guy should be the #1 overall pick in the draft!!!!"

Not in the same caliber as the list you provided, but who would you have drafted before him last season? Especially considering that the NFL always drafts QB’s too high.

I think he’s talented enuf to hang in the league- he’s a very hard worker, a geek, he will watch film and work his way into a starting position with raiders—

But he’s runs the risk of becoming a modern day Jim plunkett….

He was drafted by a horrible patriots franchise and plunkett was savaged- left the game until Al Davis resurrected his career and won a Super Bowl 10 yrs later…

If he doesn’t get destroyed by playing for raiders- I can see him opting out after his rookie contract and going to a spot he can excel

Not in the same caliber as the list you provided, but who would you have drafted before him last season? Especially considering that the NFL always drafts QB’s too high.

This is why certain teams (ahem Raiders, Browns, Jets, Titans) are stuck in suck. QB success is 100% related to the talent around them. When your team sucks and has loads of holes to fill (pause), you always draft the best available IMO. It’s how the Lions pulled themselves out of suckitude. Yes they took Stafford #1 overall back in 2010 or whenever, but they still sucked until they traded him away, gained a load of picks and a cast off former #1 QB in Goff. They focused on loading up on trench players - Sewell, Hutchinson, et al - and some skilled help - Gibbs, Jameson.
 
I'm old enough to remember the QB who was the future of the Raiders according to Al Davis, Todd Marinovich. This was his first NFL game against KC.

This draft had some real head scratchers imo and wasn’t focused enough on the big picture long term.

Raiders - Mendoza was never a 1.1 qb. Raiders should have traded out of that position as they have a lot of needs. Stockpile picks for next year when the class is much stronger at the top.

Titan - Tate would be the 5th or 6th best WR in next years class. Love Ward, but would have told him let’s get you a OL or DL now and get you that #1 next year (JS?). Then again, if Titans take Bain, they might not be able to snag that good of a WR.

Dolphins - they missed out on home run/slam dunk pick in Bain. For what?

You could go on and on.

I would have traded the number one pick for the best package of draft picks I could get, my one condition would be that I need a top 10 pick along with other draft choices.The Raiders aren't a QB away but a lot of players away. I would have taken Cici Mauigoa or Reuben Bain. Then look to draft the best player available the rest of the way, and build the roster. Then you head into this upcoming draft with a stronger QB class, and a much improved roster to surround your young QB.

Andrew Luck might be the only QB I can remember that went to a team with a bad roster and was able to win games and have success. Their OLine was awful, Trent Richardson was a bust, and the defense was mediocre. He basically had TY Hilton and Colby Fleener, and he was able to win playoff games. Now his career was cut short because Ryan Grigson couldn't build a roster and Luck got beat up behind an awful OLine, and that was that. Like you said what surrounds a young QB 99.9% of the time dictates what kind of success he will have. Sometimes you're just better off being drafted later, but landing in a stable, well run organization.

Agree but Mendoza was an easy pick for the them imo. Super polished kid, face of the franchise type and a **** good player. He’s taking his lumps but what do you expect on a sh1tty team?

The Dolphins are not a serious NFL franchise, they are a developer's hobby. They've put more thought into what other sports they can play at the stadium than the one which already does. Oh, and the parking lot looks like something a 5th grader with an erector set and toy race track would build in their living room. I am glad I entered the Portal.

I really wonder how GMs and team personnel have not figured out you build the team from the inside out?

Unless the QB is some generational level talent you HAVE to take #1, the Raiders, Browns etc. need to be drafting lineman that high, or trading back a few spots for another first round pick and get the lineman you want. Then once you have that core go find your QB. We see it all the time (especially with the browns) draft a qb in the first round, throw em in the fire with NO help, then wonder why he doesnt look like Brady out there.
