When you guys watched Mendoza, did you really think "Oh, yeah, this guy should be the #1 overall pick in the draft!!!!"

That’s true. Happened here in Miami when Ross forced the Tua pick over Herbert and others elsewhere.

Why I said in Vegas, Tom Brady is there to help in the assessment of the Qb decision.
Flores wanted Herbert. I'd forgotten about that. Flores had the Dolphins D playing at a high level. If they pick Herbert that O is better.....changes everything.

BRock - article from ESPN has something here that set off our original argument:

It’s what Miami did to him.

Will have a short career as a starter in the league and eventually transition to broadcasting.
Man, that sounds strangely accurate.

Although, I'm not sure he has the skillset for badenage and entertaining analysis. My son looked at him and said, "Dad, you know why he's always smiling too hard, right? He's on the spectrum." Anyway, unless he's dumb with his money, he will be A-OK financially from the first contract. I just don't think he'll be a successful NFL QB, but as always, time will tell.

#1 overall QBs don't really bust these days.

QBs with over 30 college starts and over 9ypa in their final year in CFB of note.

Jayden Daniels
Baker Mayfield
Jalen Hurts
Jaxson Dart
Robert Griffin III
Russell Wilson
Deshaun Watson
Bo Nix
Cam Ward
Marcus Mariota
Trevor Lawrence
Caleb Williams
Fernando Mendoza

Mayfield, Ward, Lawrence, Williams, and now Mendoza all went #1 overall.

Other #1 overall picks of note...

Kyler Murray - 11.6ypa but only 17 college starts
Joe Burrow - 10.8ypa, 28 starts
Cam Newton - 10.2ypa, 26 total college starts (14 at Auburn 12 at Blinn)
Andrew Luck - 8.9ypa, 38 starts
Bryce Young - 8.8ypa, 27 starts
Jameis Winston (also legally blind until recently) - 8.6ypa, 27 starts.
Sam Bradford - 8.5ypa, 26 starts
Jared Goff - 8.4ypa, 37 starts
Matt Stafford - 7.8ypa, 34 starts

Over 30 starts and #1 Overall Pick...Mayfield, Ward, Lawrence, Williams, Luck, Goff, Stafford.

Good company.

I spoke with an agent today about Mendoza (just as a friend - I don't work in sports, FYI), and he surprised me a little bit. He really liked Mendoza around the natty, but upon further review, he's kind of come over to my view of Mendoza...HOWEVER, he still thinks the Raiders should draft him even though he thinks he (Mendoza) will be a bust.

I asked why and he said because of two reasons, and this was by far the most interesting thing he said about Mendoza and his situation:
1. The Raiders need hope and Mendoza will give them 1-2 years of hope. Mendoza will help sell tickets, merch, etc.
2. The GM won't really be held responsible because he said 1st round QB's are a 50/50 proposition at best.

So, his summation of Mendoza was that upon further review, he doesn't think he's all that great like he did around the natty, but the Raiders should still take him at #1 because of the business side of things.

My take: Mendoza played the game of his life, even had a highlight reel TD run that will live forever in replays and CFB lore, but he didn't even throw a single TD, despite having the advantage of going into the half up 10-0. Very good CFB QB, lousy NFL prospect as a 1st rounder, but I guess we'll see. Maybe he'll make me eat my words. Doubtful, but stranger things have happened.
