What surprised you most about Miami's 2025 season?

I’m going to say staff cohesion this year. This was Mario’s first year of hitting on his coaching staff. Everything came together this year. That’s a sign of good coaching.
We haven’t been able to say this the past three seasons. Mario became a better
Coach this year too!
 
1) Making it to the National Championship
2) Beating Ohio State in the 2nd round of the playoffs
3) The leap the defense took under Heatherman and the new defensive staff.

It’s why I don’t blame anyone for melting down after SMU

That game made us:

4-11 under Mario after the calendar turns to November 1st

4 and friggin 11

And we ripped off 7 wins in a row after that including 3 in a row on the road

That loss hit me hard. As hard as any of late. It felt soul crushing because it felt like another year was down the drain, particularly after seeing what this team did the 1st 5 seasons and thinking we had a legit playoff contender.

It felt like more than another season down the drain. It felt like "that loss" that we can point back to with all prior coaches since Coker where you are starting the clock on when this coach would be fired. Except this time, that also meant the big money stepping away and the program being done-done. I genuinely thought that loss was going to be the final shovel of dirt on the program. I have never been so happy to be so wrong.
 
The emergence of Toney and the in-season adjustments after SMU that sparked our incredible late season run.

The kicker was so solid for most of the year and there was no dropoff from last year. That was a nice surprise. Then the playoffs started and he was exactly what I feared going in.
 
David Blay was probably considered the biggest portal get preseason, and he ended up being like the 11th most impactful guy....and that's not even a poor reflection of him, just the unexpected greatness from 10 other guys!
 
THE ABSOLUTE BOUNCE BACK FROM THE LOSS TO SMU. Honestly thought the season was a goner at that point, per tradition.
