What specifically is wrong with our D

Our approach lends itself to lack of discipline. That problem is compounded when your talent level is inferior.

Also, tackling.

So, you know, pretty big things.

It's the dline. We've had first rounders the last couple of years. We don't get enough pressure on the QB. Manny's doesn't focus on the run, so we're always going to give up yards there.

But we're 2-3 because of the offense not the defense.

Zero gap integrity by our DL. They just run up the field & our LBs have 320 lb guards hitting them at full speed every play. In the rare instance our )
LBs have open field, they are too unathletic to even make a play. This scheme works against teams that we have more talent than, but this season the cupboard is so bare on D we are getting eaten alive.

Our CBs struggle to cover anyone, but that also might have to do with our lack of pass rush. At safety, Bubba Bolden is serviceable but lacks physicians. Gurvan Hall might be the worst UM safety I've ever seen. To add insult to injury, it seems like none of them can tackle.
Then people are like “ why don’t we recruit lb’s”?

Our cb’s line up 8-10 yards off most plays , bail out and rarely get to play man or physical man then I hear “ why is our cb recruiting so bad”? We’ve recruited those two positions horribly since manny has been here. The answer is right in front of you . Kids aren’t dumb, They watch the position they play on Saturday’s and are like “ f that “.

We can focus on the defense all day

How about 7 points at half against one of the worst defenses in the NCAA

What about 23 points from the offense against App State
At the end of the day the head coach is the dc. He’s also the guy who hired lashlee amd before that Penos. The one constant is everything he touches sucks.

Paging Lance, Macho, Roman and any other X&Os folks

What defense should we be running with this personnel currently on the roster?
It's the overall defensive scheme. And by scheme I mean the X's and O's (the way they adjust to formations and opponents), pursuit, tackling, indy periods. How they teach block destruction. It's the whole deal

Not give him a break on that regard

He hired Enos who sucked and he hired Lashlee who has been awful this season

It’s been exposed. Ifs a gimmick defense that’s ran its course.

Players cut corners with Manny and get away with it because they don't respect him, and he allows it. They don't seem ready to go. Between that and seniority play... Freshmen want that NIL deal money and aren't going to stand for that BS. They want to get paid and they want to win.

but the 3 major things for me.

1: seniority play
2: horrible blitzes
3: undisciplined

Offensive and defensive football scheming is about seeking a numbers advantage/avoiding a numbers dis-advantage.

In different words other posters have noted that Manny's is a high risk high reward scheme. What's occurring when he sends pressure (virtually every play) is that he is seeking a numerical advantage against the blocking scheme, thereby leaving a free tackler, and achieving a negative play against the offense.

The obvious problem as we've observed far too frequently is that when the negative play is not achieved behind the los, a downfield numerical advantage immediately swings to the offense. It's a big part of why our tackling looks so atrocious...our downfield defenders are (a) at a numerical disadvantage, and (b) have to make plays in space, to a far greater extent than other defenses.

As offensive coordinators have seen a lot of Manny defense after all these years they're now able to scheme against so as to avoid and get past the instant pressure that Manny brings, and take advantage of the numbers advantage and wider gaps that his defense makes available to offenses downfield.

It's everything...it starts with putting players in bad positions and then them having to make a decision.
If he were smart at this point...which he isn't...I'd abandon all the blitzing...play the absolute best front four regardless of age and live with the results. Then play straight up man the rest of the way...again with the best 7 regardless of age and live with the results.

Very interesting post , your experience is illuminated here.
Glaringly on point, I’ll try to add but it will be tough.

We need a Wilfork to clog and protect second level .

You post it so good this is about it.

My compliments

Almost everything with the scheme. spot drops to bailing in man vs slant teams to 900 yard cushions without any intent to fly up and hit anyone to 0 gap integrity to nobody having a clue what to do because chaos bro to the fact nobody looks like they have tackles anyone before in their lives. It’s literally all of it

Someone could write a lance roffers further review length post on everything wrong with manny’s d. I think it’s more suited for someone to write what is right with manny’s d because I don’t think there is a single thing schematically minus maybe the striker one could mention. But they don’t play sound football either so that goes out the window

Our LB’s are slow, they’re under sized, our secondary is more concerned with a big hit (ie our targeting plague) than wrapping up and making a sound tackle. To put it simply - we personify the glitz of the turnover chain. We’re all flare. We have no grit as a unit. We’re soft.
