What current head coaches do you consider elite in College Football?

Depends if you’re talking just college or not IMO

What did in the pros was impressive and certainly more than Saban achieved

HAsnt quite translated yet though in college but still early

What he did at San Diego was pretty crazy too.

There’s only two elite coaches imo.....Saban and Meyer.

Always impressed by Gary Patterson’s work with TCU. Not sure I’d call him elite though.
I'd **** sure call him elite....He does what he does with 2* Hand me downs from OU...UT...OSU...Baylor...A&M...etc....Imagine what he'd do at UM...

Not everyone pans out. People were saying, "Tom Herman did a lot for Houston. Imagine him with Texas' budget!" or "Harbaugh did so much at Stanford, imagine him with Michigan's budget!" Charlie Strong...(cough cough) Al Golden (cough)

Why not Coker won one like Chizik it'll stick to them as something they've accomplished long after you and I aren't around.generations a 100 years from now will see it in the record books.coach's like woodson in basketball, coach k,bear Bryant,Nick saban will be called elite and it won't because they had the best players but by how many championships they've won
You're explaining how people ignorant of context will arrive at assumptions. That's not an argument for actually bring the best coach.

Obscene budgets alone do not make coaches elite, but yes it does help a lot. As you know, Harbaugh has lost head to head against Meyer despite his Michigan budget. Many coaches at Texas had enormous budgets and got tossed. Plus, Les Miles got booted at LSU despite having an LSU budget. The same program both he and Saban won a title with.

I'm not taking anything away from Richt. I'm one of his biggest fans. But far and away, Meyer and Saban proved that no matter what (big budget) program the land in, they will win a title.

You're right. Their salesmanship and organizational skills also make them elite, but to me the budgets are the overwhelming factor for their success because it allows them to hire great coaches, have the best facilities, and more importantly recruit the best players. Les is not as talented in those areas, and Harbaugh's mercurial personality can be polarizing and cause organizational friction.

I suppose this discussion hinges on the operational definition of 'elite college head coach' and what you believe the criteria are.

1. Rings? Larry Coker has a ring as HC when Butch Davis, Chris Peterson, Gary Patterson, David Shaw and a lot of better coaches don't, which is why you can't rely completely on rings as a deciding factor.

2. Wins? Richt is up there with the best of them.

3. Coaching? If you're a purist, where the technical aspects of Xs and Os matter, a HC isn't elite without actually coaching a position, coordinating, or calling plays. Urban Meyer's offense went to **** when Tom Herman wasn't there to prop him up; so how can he be considered an elite HC?

4. all of the above?

I personally think Xs & Os matter and could see an argument where championships are involved, but it's tough to have a pure discussion about elite HCs and know budgets play a role as well.

Speaking of Harbaugh, do any of you remember something about Jim Kelly punching him in the face back in the late 90's when Harbaugh was playing for the Colts? Does that ring a bell with anyone?
