I am pretty certain i was the first one on this board to harp on the poor play by Flagg. The reason was, he was getting a lot of positive comments about his play (namely one play) against Pitt his freshman year. From that point on, I decided to play close attention to him pretty much every snap from there on, because i was so desperate for good LB play.

It was insane what i was watching the rest of that year. Missing tackles, too slow to cover RBS or TE and just running himself out of plays (or into a blocker that he could never disengage). It was bad. I spoke out pretty loudly about it, and was met with a chorus of “You’re wrong, he’ s a bright spot for us” or “He is the smartest player out there” type of stuff. Eventually, most of this board saw what i saw.

I continued to watch him closely, and I must admit, towards the end of the year last year, spring game, and this first game here- he has improved. He sometimes clogs the correct lane now,,and sometimes doesn’t have tackles broken on him. He appears to me to be a very average linebacker now, which is nowhere good enough for what we as canes fans want and deserves. But he is no longer a negative on almost every play. He is now just an average player, imo.

I haven’t been as vocal against his play Lately for the reason of his improvement as well as the chorus of undeserving praise is not nearly as loud as it once was. That being said, i want someone else to step up. Cam Johnson looked better to me that the improved Flagg, but still not to the level of what a canes MLB should be. Maybe he will get there with more reps.

There’s plenty more. Lol

I’ve been telling papa Steed for a couple years his son was a MLB imo. He played there last year and well. I‘m surprised he didn’t stay there.
I was so happy on the first drive he and Flagg communicated on the switch that lead to the td pass being broken up by steed. That was smart by both linebackers and that’s a sign of good coaching....I give credit to both guys there.

Why?

You don't like hearing questions such as "How many cafecitos have you had today?" "Was it hot out there?" or "What do you think of the new locker rooms?"

I see you my boy, I wasn't really following recruiting back then but looks like @nycane Was the first to say naw lmao. A lot of people thought being slow didn't matter yikes.

The negativity is overblown because we know what he is and isn't at this point. But in no way shape or form is he good enough to be our starting LB. Those two things are separate.
You just made no sense, my beloved brother. You just said he’s not good enough to be our starter in any shape or form but the negativity is overblown. How does that make sense and how can they be separate?

The reason there is a lot of negativity is because of how much burn he is getting when he shouldn’t be starting. He should be a rotational player and never in on passing 3rd down situations.

Lance big upped Emory too.

I wouldn't say Lance big upped him. I think he called it straight. Below is his opinion by watching actual game file supported by pictural evidence he provided in his enlarged post.

Why he will be good:
  • Ability to diagnose and see plays before they happen
  • Works through trash well
  • Finds the ball on most plays
  • Leader on the field who is competitive and wants to win
Where it could go wrong:
  • The lack of foot speed was glaring at times
  • Not only did a lack of speed show up, the lack of athleticism in movement skills were apparent with his missed tackles
  • Is not overly large so he lacks the mass to finish plays that he gets to
  • Has already been coached at a major HS level, how much upside is remaining
Overall
There were a lot of good things on film for Flagg in this game, but there were clear deficiencies as well. His speed is going to need to improve to make a mark at the college level. He tries hard, works to compete on all plays, makes the calls for the defense. In order to succeed at this level he will need to gain mass as well.

At this point, he looks like a three-star player who has plus instincts and understands what is asked of him. He will most likely start out as a special teams player and he really reminds me of Mike Smith, another LB who worked extremely hard, understood football, but at times his lack of foot speed, movement skills, and overall mass led to missed tackles in games.

You see the allure of Flagg, as he is a true LB who fits the aggressive mold of this defense and he looks to seek-and-destroy on every play. Once the coaches get him into this system they will have the chance to maximize his many strengths while also looking to mask his deficiencies.
We knew what we were getting before he hit campus. It's apparent, the current staff is trying to maximize his strengths, yet are struggling to minimize his deficiencies.

Oh yeah; and u’ll see me agreeing. There was an original offer thread, as well, where myself @nycane @Dwinstitles among a handful of others were not in love.

I questioned Flagg, Holley, Dykstra (and got killed on Dykstra, lol). I also semi ?’d Garcia, only b/c of his LB Poly stint, & Narbonne. But I stated him going to GA playing at Grayson & that dedication may have been for the best both competition & maturity wise.

Flagg is more of a G5 product, lower tier P5 player.

a play or two early on i've seen as recently as Clemson with DJ when Lawrence was there, but not "a couple of early series".

You put in the 2 when the 1's work is done for the day.
Vinny Testaverde would sub for Kosar early in the games to get him game experience. Ditto for Walsh in for Testaverde.

Boy gonna be what 4 year starter here? With covid I dont even know how long these guys can stay so maybe 5-6 year starter at LB for Miami.. Home of Dan Morgan, Ray Lewis, Armstead, Vilma, etc. sigh

They are separate but interconnected. The overblown negativity is implying we have better options. The roster is what it is.

We don't have a sideline-to-sideline MIKE that can play in space.

It's overblown because everyone is making threads or flooding game thread w/ Flagg sucks. He's slow and he won't ever make those plays where he chases down the QB. Rather than just accept it every thread and every game the same sentiment gets shared. Flagg is mediocre but we don't need 20 threads to justify it.

Idk if I'd go as far as to say we don't have that on roster. I do think it's fair to say the coaches don't believe anyone else is ready at this point. Wesley has to be the guy he just has to.

I agree on the threads but the fact he can’t chase the QB, makes an incorrect read and gets taken out of the play or just gets burned by a RB is eventually going to hurt us in one of these games.

Therefore, unless he turns into Zach Thomas or a version of a competent high level LB, it’s going to drag on.

It's on Charlie and Mario to get someone else up to speed. Week 4 would be my guess as to when that is.
