Jake got a pretty nice snap count last game, but most of it was in run out the clock time.

I'd love to see him get the 3rd, 4th, and 5th series next game. Everyone knows there's no Qb competition, but let the pup get some meaningful snaps.
I said it already.. He should have been in at 28 pts. At least a series or 2

Please watch him in space or anything outside the tackles. I beg you.
I am pretty certain i was the first one on this board to harp on the poor play by Flagg. The reason was, he was getting a lot of positive comments about his play (namely one play) against Pitt his freshman year. From that point on, I decided to play close attention to him pretty much every snap from there on, because i was so desperate for good LB play.

It was insane what i was watching the rest of that year. Missing tackles, too slow to cover RBS or TE and just running himself out of plays (or into a blocker that he could never disengage). It was bad. I spoke out pretty loudly about it, and was met with a chorus of “You’re wrong, he’ s a bright spot for us” or “He is the smartest player out there” type of stuff. Eventually, most of this board saw what i saw.

I continued to watch him closely, and I must admit, towards the end of the year last year, spring game, and this first game here- he has improved. He sometimes clogs the correct lane now,,and sometimes doesn’t have tackles broken on him. He appears to me to be a very average linebacker now, which is nowhere good enough for what we as canes fans want and deserves. But he is no longer a negative on almost every play. He is now just an average player, imo.

I haven’t been as vocal against his play Lately for the reason of his improvement as well as the chorus of undeserving praise is not nearly as loud as it once was. That being said, i want someone else to step up. Cam Johnson looked better to me that the improved Flagg, but still not to the level of what a canes MLB should be. Maybe he will get there with more reps.

I think some folks are overreacting to last weeks game defensively. There was a bunch of gap integrity breakdowns, losing contain on scrambles / cutbacks.

There was also issues in the secondary, Ivey taking the awful angle on the drag route allowed a first down. There’s no way a mesh concept gets a third and 19. You give up a catch in front of the coverage and make the tackle. Not only did he take a bad angle , trip over his feet he took out another defender trying to make a play. I know it’s cliche to pick on 8 but at this point the staff is at fault if they keep throwing him out there , especially if this trend continues. He’s not starting himself.
I think that’s unfair to the new staff as well. It’s obvious the kid does the right things in practice and the off-season. As a new staff you gotta be willing to give a guy a clean slate.

Plus the previous regime didn’t exactly leave the cupboard full. So they are somewhat hamstrung here a bit. I think he will continually get his snaps cut.

Unfortunately the team we are playing this week doesn’t use the forward pass. I mean frank Gore Jr threw 4-5 passes last week.

Flagg had a few good plays. I remember him shedding a blocker and making a tackle between the hashes and I also remember him immediately tackling a TE on a pass to the flats.

The blitz everyone is aware of so I won't harp on that (but it was pathetic). I haven't seen anyone mention it, but ob the first drive, he also had a blitz where he was basically untouched, the qb got rid of it quickly and completed a pass (i think on ivey lol) but having Flagg right in his face had absolutely no impact. Basically, he wasnt there.

Thats the story on Flagg. Smart player. Hes got a D-1 brain.

But hes slow, small, and he doesn't play like a maniac (think Zach Thomas). He plays like a nice kid because he is.

So yes, he is very frustrating to watch from a fans perspective.

We all knew lb probably weakest position group on team going in.It is what it is until someone steps up. Overall lbs looked better but that is not saying much

Was also a play where the TE ran right past him over the middle and Flagg looked like he was running in slow motion. Him in any pass coverage over the middle is a guaranteed L.

Lol flagg is sorry af he was out there getting penalized because people were talking **** about him in the stands the kids not good and we all know ivey is straight up garbage we are gonna get picked on if they keep playing.

I wish they’d do like the kid on remember the titans and tell the coach they wanna get taken out the game

8 is on his third db coach. At some point the staff has to realize he’s a practice player. That’s where due diligence comes in on their parts. This isn’t reinventing the wheel , it’s covering a dude and tackling.

Btw I said “ if this trend continues and if they keep throwing him out there“, so let’s stop acting like they’re beyond reproach or making excuses. It’s simple , if he keeps doing the same things he’s been doing for four years something has to be done. If not , it’s the staff not Ivey deserving the blame.

Flagg will make plays that nobody else can because he sees things developing faster than most of the guys at his position. He’ll also get beat at times because he just lacks twitch / athletic ability of the others. That’s where the staff has to identify is it worth putting him out there. He‘s basically a coach out there, he knows everyone’s assignment. There’s plenty of pros to go with the cons.

Why can’t he get paid to coach the better players up and just sit on the bench and call out the plays for the defense instead of being on the field missing wide open blitzes on the qb and getting mauled by guards because he’s to small to run through **** or shake they fat ***

Can Steed fill a similar role? I know he plays Will but I always felt he can be a similar a slightly better version of Flagg if he played Mike and allow us to get better athletes at the outside linebacker spots.

I might be totally off but just I always thought that Steed at Mike made sense.

Nah bruh need the 1s getting all the prep they can get. The backups should definitely come in earlier than last week but you need to build rhythm early in games. Doesn't benefit the team to give meaningful reps to the backup.
The fact that we're installing a new offense is the only reason I don't have an issue with TVD getting extra snaps. I remember in 1984, JJ frequently inserted Testaverde for a couple of series in the second quarter of games (when it was still a contest) to get him some meaningful reps. It paid dividends the following season when Testaverde had to start. Even though he had a national championship under his belt, Kosar didn't have much more experience that TVD currently has.

Shannon tried to do the same thing with Marve/Harris, but he was ham handed with it. You have to be flexible and have a sense of the flow of the game. I still believe it cost us a win against UNC where Marve was on a roll, and he inserted Harris and we proceeded to lose. You can't jeopardize a win for the sake of getting someone experience.
