Weak Sauce From Coach Rumph

"Cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph said Byrd “felt the vibe better at Tennessee. He liked the atmosphere at the school. He made the decision like a man. He talked to me and told me how he felt. You can’t look down on that. You’ve got to let a kid be a person he wants to be. I can’t be upset with that. He’s going to have a bright future at Tennessee. He’s one of the first kids I recruited. I just wish him the best.”

Off two terrific games, Whiteside has more to prove to Heat; Dolphins, Canes, Marlins chatter | Sports Buzz

I couldn't care less about discussing Byrd for one second longer but am concerned that Rumph would speak publicly and so weakly about a situation like this. He needs to take off his high school coach hat where wishing kids well wherever they go is cool and put on the hat where he never speaks about a kid again that d!cked him and his current employer over the night before NSD. Tighten it up, Rumph. This isn't the Penn State game that you blew.

Again, I try very hard not to criticize fellow fans...

However, what did Rumph say above that was so egregious? Are you that far removed from understanding the fickle minds of a teenager. So Byrd thought Tennessee was a better fit, awesome, good luck in Rocky Top. So Byrd takes shots at Miami while he committed to Tennessee. Fantastic. Sun rises and sets still in the program just like it did yesterday amd will tomorrow.

Rumph? His comments shows that he is acting like an adult. What a crime!

Once again.
"No comment" is the perfect answer when presented with questions that you gain nothing by answering them.

How do you know that he gained nothing by answering the question? I thought his answer shows that he's a credible adult that doesn't live in a binary world of extremes. Saying "no comment" or going as far as some have suggested by saying something along the lines of "I'll only talk about players that are here" sounds extremely butthurt given the situation.

Rump preserved the relationship with Coach Kramer at Naples by taking the high road. This may have been the smart thing to do.

Is a HS coach who couldn't teach his player the value of commitment worthy of a "relationship?"

Sounds to me like it all one way, with Rumph bent over and Kramer and his players doing the deed.

You tell me what is there to be gained by answering a question about a recruit that signed elsewhere?
Saying "no comment" is the high road. That's not your recruit anymore so there is nothing to be said.

Can you guys relax? The guy has just started the job. The same goes for the rest of the staff. I get it we're all tired of the last 10 years, but we still have to let these guys work, before complaining!

There may be nothing to be gained from your perspective, but perhaps a recruit or thier parents and family may find it refreshing to see some honesty and civility from a coach. The quote is an insight into Rumph's personality. Recruits are trying hard to get to know each of the coaches that recruit them in order to see whether they'll be a personality fit. Any information is good information for a recruit. In this case, it's my opinion that Rumph acquitted himself well and didn't come off like a petulent child.
