A University located in an urban environment. Reminding our rivals of our storied history of multiple National Championships, the most recent of which is decades removed. A University who could not find success despite Dave Wannstedt's interest in helping us turn it around. A school whose fertile recruiting ground is picked clean by state schools with deep pockets. Our home stadium is rented from an NFL team. We recall success in the Big East, but now find ourselves with the ACC Coastal as our biggest potential title. Our head coach got the job, because he had a career as a DC and we can't land a legit head coach with experience.

We are Pitt, but have yet to admit it.

We're above Pittsburgh. I was just there and attended the game. The Pittsburgh fans care but not too much. That is a Steelers town. The gap between Panthers fans on Saturday and Steelers fans at the Monday night Miami/Pittsburgh game was like Laurel Caverns not too far away.

In contrast the Canes fan is more passionate than the typical Dolphins fan, everything else being equal.

Also the Miami campus is superior, other than Cathedral of Learning and also the remnants of Forbes Field.

Pittsburgh was stupid enough to tear down an on-campus stadium. We may have some dense moments in our football history but nothing that moronic.

We're above Pittsburgh now for the reasons you say... but just give it 10 years.

Miami is still riding the coattails of the great teams of the 80's-00's.

There are enough gullible idiots still around who delude themselves into believing that Miami is "one good coach away" from being "back." Those are the people who buy tickets.

The reality hasn't settled in yet for a lot of people that we are and forever will be a middle-of-the-road ACC team. But even the slower people will wake up to reality eventually.

Pittsburgh is our future.

We don't resemble Pitt at all. BTW Wannstache is an f'n IDIOT! He had full personnel control and ran the Bears into the ground with his stupid trades and draft picks. Traded the #11 overall pick for Rick Mirer who was cut one season later. Drafted a PUNTER with a 2nd rounder! Signed Bryan "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" Cox to the biggest contract in Bears history. In 5 years I think he drafted ONE player, Olin Kreutz, who made more than one Pro Bowl. His 1st/2nd round busts include Curtis Conway, Carl Simpson, John Thierry, Marcus Spears, Rashaan Salaam, Pat Riley, Todd Sauerbrun (PUNTER), Walt Harris, Bobby Engram, John Allred, Curtis (P)Enis, Tony Parrish. I can't think of any GM who drafted more busts in a 5 year period. Wannstedt only had success when he was supervised by someone brilliant who kept his idiocy in check. Whenever Wannstache was the boss his teams failed miserably. Bears, Dolphins, Pitt. Anyone who thinks Wannstache is anything more than a bumbling idiot is completely clueless.

I'm from Pittsburgh, there are similarities....Both historically and even the programs today as both are attempting to build around defense, and don't play well as favorites.

Haha. Points for the Laurel Cavern reference.

I may need to go drink 1000 Iron City beers just to numb the pain that we can have a semi-serious debate about being similar to Pitt.

I blame Pete Gonzalez. (Sad thing is Ol' Pete would be a Day 1 starter at Miami now)

I've actually had the same thoughts as OP. Obviously UM's run of success was more recent (Pitt's last run of contention was late 70's early 80's) but there are similar parallels if you read how they:

A. Let their facilities decline
B. Had a string of bad coaching hires
C. Fell too far behind the curve as college football changed schematically in the mid-80's.
D. Gave away their single biggest asset in the revenue wars that are the college football present (a home stadium).

The reality is, if you fall too far behind, it can be impossible to catch up.

We aren’t Pitt. Pittsburgh sucks. They have no real history. Like 5 stars ever. Marino, that Ram guy, umm. Oh Dorrsett (meh really). We are more USC. Looking for a way back from the forest of scam coaches.

No real history? That’s just not true. They were once a football dynasty and have more championships than we do. They’ve produced a ton of star players who ended up on the hof. They’ve just become irrelevant and their glory days are so far behind them that regular folks like you think they have no history. What is scary is that we are becoming Pitt. A forgotten dynasty. Another 15 years like our last 15 and some folks won’t even know about our past dominance.

They had some great coaches. Like pop warner.

Pitt was once a private school but became a quasi state school in the 1960s. Their endowment is much much larger than Miami’s.

The Panthers were last nationally relevant back in the early 80s, when Dan Marino played there. Since then they’ve had a fair share of stars, but generally poor coaching. Penn State joining the Big 10 gave Michigan, Ohio State, and others a further inroad to Pennsylvania HS talent, as well as dropping Pitt as a traditional rival, did as much damage as the Panther’s poor coaching hires.

In another five seasons, we’ll be Pitt.
