VTech Perspective after Re-Watch

We played a physical team, who you could tell by their taunting antics were really jacked up for this game on a short week.

What they do well counters a lot of what we want to doz

Our QB played sloppy. Our defense missed a ton of tackles and played sloppy but we won.

Clean it up and let’s keep building.

The sky is not falling.

Naw man... most ppl predicted us to win 10 games which mean every win must be a blow out. Yes TEN blow outs.... in COLLEGE FOOTBALL.....

Exactly. We're victims of our own success the first 4 games. Everyone knew we still had some weaknesses on this team to start the season. Cam and our weak schedule the first 4 games made a lot of people forget we're still a work in progress.

People overlook glaring deficiencies because we won. It never seems to occur to them that it will catch up to them down the road. “Hey, we won”, let’s just ignore what we really sucked at.” A win doesn’t absolve your sins.

What if we don’t get the Hail Mary call and lost? We played the same either way. I bet there would be more tolerance for calling how we played out then. There shouldn’t be any difference. You don’t get extra rainbows and puppies.

I think most people recognize this is not a perfect team.
But perhaps same people want to appreciate a hard-fought victory, flawed as it may be, regardless of what our future holds this season.
This is college football, after all.

Everyone is fired up to play us.

We could rock up against a 2-8 Duke team and they'd play it like it was a do or die game.

The concerns/criticisms are legit.

But the fact that half the board expected us to blow out every team and win the NC is just delusional.

We are a very good team that has a real shot at the playoffs/ACC, but this isn't the 2001 Canes. And **** even the 2001 team had some close games which this board would have melted down over.
People forget how that BC game was. It was pretty bad. They did not look like the greatest team in college football, that game.

I have and continue to be concerned about our run scheme/offense. Not going to go down the rabit hole yet again, but rewatch all of our games, especially in the 1H and the same stuff keeps reappearing. Others aren't worried for a myriad of reasons and some use stat lines to prove points. The same stuff from famu shows up in the VT game. We won, we have cam ward. I'm happy. But I also want a NC
I want a NC to but didn't expect it this year and definitely don't expect it now. I'm just hoping we can win the ACC this year. This team came into the season with to many ? marks and we needed health to be on our side.

facts ... i bet ole miss would love an ugly win about right now

It's hard to stay grounded when everyone's hyping us up fr. I'd be happy with 10 wins tbh. Have to remind myself. Ward will keep us in most games. I have little confidence if we have to go up against say a georgia and Bama back to back with our running game. Just going to enjoy watching cam and try not to get too worked up. Lord knows my blood pressure was through the roof last night

I was a little surprised to jump on the boards last night and see so much negativity. Obviously it was much closer than we thought it would be, but I thought I was missing something based on the reactions.

I suppose I get it, and I left the game last night thinking, "hmmm, things looked a bit different in that one and I have some new concerns..." but isn't that football? I am not doom and gloom as some others and this didn't "feel like a loss" to me. We knew coming into this game that this team isn't perfect, but it is still **** good.

A few points:

Momentum is a powerful thing, and VT definitely gave us a gift with that fake FG (but Bryant made an amazing play - he doesn't shoot that gap, that's the nail in the coffin). With that said, and regarding momentum, the holding call on Bell, which in my mind was a little weak, took a TD off the board on a play that was another amazing highlight by Cam. That in and of itself didn't cause the shift, the INT on the next play was the culprit there, but that DB made a great play disguising and on that play, he won. He outmaneuvered Cam. It happens.

Styles make fights. VT came out with a great gameplan. Were we outcoached? For sure, but see above. What does that game look like if it is 21-7 and the stadium is going crazy after Cam once again finds George? We don't know, but I suspect it would be another runaway. I also think Vtech is going to end up better than we originally thought and this win will look different. Could be wrong, but that's the sense I get. They're physical and have a lot of heart.

VT Field Goal before the half - they had two 17s on the field - should have been wiped off. Refs...

Jalen Rivers - underrated, though I do think he's starting to get his due, is sorely missed. Bell played pretty well in the USF game, but in my post after leaving that game, I mentioned Cam being special for HOW he looks doing going about his business. He makes it look so easy. ...I will say the inverse with Bell - even in the USF game, and certainly this game, he doesn't look comfortable. I really hope that the light comes on and he's our LT of the future b/c he clearly has exceptional traits, but the way he goes about it just doesn't scream tactician.

OJ Frederique - a play not talked about much is when he sniffed out that screen. My god - he's going to be a player. Also, BS on that PI call - another major momentum shift that would have gotten the defense off the field on another great play made by the true freshman...instead, the POS line judge throws a flag from 35 yards away, on a call that isn't his to make.

Also, I counted and that flag was thrown 5 second after the play...which triggered my Terry Porter PTSD (...who to this day I want brought right here! With a big ribbon on his head! And I want to look him straight in the eye, and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d1ckless, hopeless, heartless, fat-***, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey **** he is! Hallelujah! Holy ****! Where's the Tylenol? )

Hail Mary - joke that that was called a TD on the field. Same as D1ckless Terry Porter, there is NO WAY he saw possession to make that call. They got it right in the both. It was a loose ball and it was touched by a player who was out of bounds. No catch.

Last point: yes this is football, and sometimes these things happen...but we won. We still won. We played a bad game. We coached a bad game. VTech believed. But the Canes didn't quit. The kept grinding and won. I can't say that for any of our teams the past 18 years.

Okay, for real last point: Ole Miss lost at home. Georgia almost lost two weeks ago. Football is weird. Enjoy the win.

This. We are still one of the best teams out there. Nobody looks unbeatable. Texas went into the fourth quarter only up one score against a tragically bad Mississippi State team. Kentucky went into Ole Miss and shut down the #1 offense in the country.

College football is a funny game.

Yea that's where I am, I was expecting one or two losses going into the year. I would add Ohio state to that list. We have been getting destroyed by teams with no name WRs I can't imagine teams known for having good WRs.

We haven’t won enough games the last 15 years for me to **** and moan all week after a win. Need to fix some sloppy turnovers and we’ll be fine

We really just need to find more creative ways to run the ball. I like the various screens which are basically run plays. I like the misdirection with a pulling guard. I like the empty set, qb draws which create huge holes for Cam in the middle.

We need more jet sweeps integrated into the running game. Right now teams are not respecting our motion/lead blockers in running situations.

We also need to move away from Martinez. He gets tackled way too easily: sure he's big and strong in terms of measurables, but he seems to have poor balance and agility and is always getting shoestring-tackled. We need someone with more wiggle in this scheme. I am really not super impressed with Fletcher either. We need more Allen and Lyle. They have the vision and elusiveness to pick up yards in tight windows--and the speed to break a big one. So many times I've watched Martinez run through what looks to be a big hole, only to stumble from arm tackles to the lower body. We really need an elite running back--and we simply don't have one, hence why I'd like to see us spread carries around and mix it up with the scheme.

This.
I'm old enough to remember having a bad weekend when the Canes beat an opponent by only a few points or at the last second. Those days have long since past. I just want the "W" and hard-fought games. People expecting our guys to kill everyone in the schedule are going to be disappointed.

While I think there are some people that clearly think like that, the line of this game did not do Miami any favors for what was expected of them.

Conversely, a win is a win - particularly in the 12 team playoff - but I do think even the rationale not every game needs to be a blowout fans can be happy we won, but still have some concerns after watching that game.
