VTech Perspective after Re-Watch

We played our worst game and still had the talent to win. (Ala: 2001 vs BC). Drones and VT looked like **** all year and had a coming out party vs. us, but we still held on. Learn from it. Bounce back with a blowout in Cal.

Confidence is deadly. And Cams first INT in the RZ to not put VT away 21-7, gave VT (a talented team) confidence that they can beat us. If that INT doesn't happen, we roll.

Just don't give lesser teams more confidence and we gucci.

after last night in the UGA and Bama game, outside of Texas, there isn't a team that has been dominant every single game and hasn't shown deficiencies - and i would argue texas hasn't been tested because Michigan looks suspect

we're not the coaches and we're not the players. we're the fans on a message board trying to enjoy a win from a game that we would have lost 10 out of 10 times over the last 20 years.

yes we have to be better, but we are 5-0, gonna be ranked top 7 or so still, have the best QB and arguably the best offense in college football, so maybe let's not pretend like everything is doom and gloom
Talking about deficiencies isn’t doom and gloom. I mean why do you think sports message boards exist, only to sit around in a circle jerk going rah rah? Does that do it for ya? Why aren’t we allowed to discuss improvements? Is it taboo? Only positive discussion allowed? Is that really all that enjoyable?

What was upsetting to me is that their RB did the same one cut between the same gap and there was NO ONE remotely interested in stopping it.

The biggest issue, despite how the defense played, was the interceptions right around the end zone - essentially lead to a 17-21 point swing taking at least 10 points, one was a TD taken away the play before and at least a FG on the other and gifting them 7 points (could have been 10 if they didn’t take the FG after the other)

Then the turnover on the first drive giving them great field position and scoring easily.

Scoring and kicking off and a punt on the first drive makes them drive the field and saves our defense a little. Avoids the momentum swings. It could have looked a lot differently. I’ve seen our win probability post game around 85-90%.. that’s a pretty dominant win that didn’t end up reflecting that on the scoreboard.

The issue with our DB’s wasn’t really their coverage against VT, it was their tackling or lack thereof. Too many bad angles and missed tackles led to lots of big plays for VT.

Our LB’s also missed a lot of tackles.

The problem with our DL was loss of containment over and over, and a lack of recognition on the repeated toss plays that gashed them. They got great pressure on VT’s QB, but had a difficult time sacking him.
Seemed like D Line was a little to eager to get sacks. DTs need to stay in their rush lanes and collapse the pocket against mobile QBs. Tackling was horrendous like you said.

I said I was going to re-watch when I got home from church. Just to clarify/see how it looked on tv.

I think I lied to myself. 🤮

Tech played their BEST game of the season ... and Miami played their worst ... with horrible ref calls that cost more than one TD ... and we won. Whew. Hope we're ready for Cal. No more BS.

Virginia Tech does this every year. They lose to one or two ****** teams, and then give us fits by baiting us into a sloppy football game. My biggest takeaway is that the guys on the sideline are the last to see it coming. And, for the love of God, we don’t have the ability to impose our will on the ground for whatever reason, we have to stop acting like we can just will our way into a running game. We have some backs that can get to the edge we need to use them.

Great post, you’ve pretty much nailed my thoughts on the game.

Except the part about us all knowing this team isn’t perfect. We all knew that in July, but half of us decided we were perfect after uf and another 49% switched sides over the next two games. Our inability to maintain any rationality is what leads to these overreactions. Everything’s the best or it’s the worst.

Thanks for being a voice of reason.

I agree with you on the run game. People look at the final stats and say well the run game is fine but not mentioning all those yards came in the 2nd half of blowout games vs backups of bad teams. I would love a NC but this isn’t a NC team
Our run game has about as much imagination as watching grass grow. Give VT high marks for their game planning. Wide toss, misdirection's, **** most of their passing was horizontal, and they racked up plenty of yards. Again, can't say much about the DC, **** we missed 21 tackles, that could have made a difference. On offense still had 507 yards, hard to complain.

I was a little surprised to jump on the boards last night and see so much negativity. Obviously it was much closer than we thought it would be, but I thought I was missing something based on the reactions.

I suppose I get it, and I left the game last night thinking, "hmmm, things looked a bit different in that one and I have some new concerns..." but isn't that football? I am not doom and gloom as some others and this didn't "feel like a loss" to me. We knew coming into this game that this team isn't perfect, but it is still **** good.

A few points:

Momentum is a powerful thing, and VT definitely gave us a gift with that fake FG (but Bryant made an amazing play - he doesn't shoot that gap, that's the nail in the coffin). With that said, and regarding momentum, the holding call on Bell, which in my mind was a little weak, took a TD off the board on a play that was another amazing highlight by Cam. That in and of itself didn't cause the shift, the INT on the next play was the culprit there, but that DB made a great play disguising and on that play, he won. He outmaneuvered Cam. It happens.

Styles make fights. VT came out with a great gameplan. Were we outcoached? For sure, but see above. What does that game look like if it is 21-7 and the stadium is going crazy after Cam once again finds George? We don't know, but I suspect it would be another runaway. I also think Vtech is going to end up better than we originally thought and this win will look different. Could be wrong, but that's the sense I get. They're physical and have a lot of heart.

VT Field Goal before the half - they had two 17s on the field - should have been wiped off. Refs...

Jalen Rivers - underrated, though I do think he's starting to get his due, is sorely missed. Bell played pretty well in the USF game, but in my post after leaving that game, I mentioned Cam being special for HOW he looks doing going about his business. He makes it look so easy. ...I will say the inverse with Bell - even in the USF game, and certainly this game, he doesn't look comfortable. I really hope that the light comes on and he's our LT of the future b/c he clearly has exceptional traits, but the way he goes about it just doesn't scream tactician.

OJ Frederique - a play not talked about much is when he sniffed out that screen. My god - he's going to be a player. Also, BS on that PI call - another major momentum shift that would have gotten the defense off the field on another great play made by the true freshman...instead, the POS line judge throws a flag from 35 yards away, on a call that isn't his to make.

Also, I counted and that flag was thrown 5 second after the play...which triggered my Terry Porter PTSD (...who to this day I want brought right here! With a big ribbon on his head! And I want to look him straight in the eye, and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d1ckless, hopeless, heartless, fat-***, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey **** he is! Hallelujah! Holy ****! Where's the Tylenol? )

Hail Mary - joke that that was called a TD on the field. Same as D1ckless Terry Porter, there is NO WAY he saw possession to make that call. They got it right in the both. It was a loose ball and it was touched by a player who was out of bounds. No catch.

Last point: yes this is football, and sometimes these things happen...but we won. We still won. We played a bad game. We coached a bad game. VTech believed. But the Canes didn't quit. The kept grinding and won. I can't say that for any of our teams the past 18 years.

Okay, for real last point: Ole Miss lost at home. Georgia almost lost two weeks ago. Football is weird. Enjoy the win.
Bell is playing exactly how I would expect a guy with only juco experience to play coming in cold. He's been up and down and but he actually won the vast majority of his reps on Friday. We notice the ones he didn't.. People forget that Bryant McKinnie got a full redshirt year to learn and get in shape behind Robert Hall. Bell was afforded no such luxury. He's doing okay under the circumstances. He's going to be very good.
