Great article but a few comments.
A. If anyone thinks that the 2015 spring or season will be civil, think again. If you think Being Mean on Twitter is an issue, think again. Watch for a major incident to happen in the locker room. Watch for a major incident to happen on the field. Do you want to know why? Where is the accountability? Where is the leadership? All we see is apathy and ignorance. Expect the worst and it has nothing to do with the fans and alumni.
B. Our athletic department is filled with liars who love to drive false propaganda. I’m sick of hearing about “Progress” or “Improvement”. I'm sick of Blake James and his assistants. But before we talk about puppets with extra chromosomes. Let's focus on the real problem the board of trustees and president.
Shalala, the Millers, Havernicks, Epsteins, Dimares and Feins are the ones who really run our athletic department (see our BOT below).
First, they love to micromanage. They love to have their hands all over the program. This is their first mistake. They need to understand athletics is a full time gig AND they need to put someone in charge who is competent and passionate about athletics. Next, this person needs to be given full autonomy and proper funding to run the department. After they find this athletic director, they need to back off and allow them to freely run the department. No more puppets implementing their decisions. No more yes men.
Second, they need to realize that not everyone hired will remain an employee for life. The BOTs and President should not be scared of losing the AD. It is a good thing to have employees who are coveted by other companies. They should simply be concerned with finding the proper AD and making the position appealing. It is not a NECESSITY to find someone who is willing to be here for life. If you want an employee for life, you have to take care of them. You have to support them. It isn’t the other way. You don’t hire someone simply because they won’t leave. We need to always invest in human capital and we fail to do it.
Third, let’s assume that the two points above are false. Let’s assume that our athletic director has full control. What does this say about Blake James? What does that say about an AD who retains Al Golden after everything? “Progress”? It’s pretty pathetic.
Finally, you want to see an athletic director. Here are two: Stan Wilcox at FSU and Tom Jurich at Lousiville. Compare them with Blake James. FSU and Louisville care about investing in Human Capital. At Miami, we don’t. That is why our athletic director has nowhere near the experience that these programs have.
