USF Will Always Be A Second Tier Program

We are not in a position to cast stones about bowl game attendance.

The only thing preventing USF from becoming a first tier program is conference affiliation. If they ever get into a P5, they’ll consistently recruit talent, given the abundance in Florida.

Agreed.

Strong is a great coach. He got a raw deal at Texas.

Strong did not get a raw deal at Texas, he had a fair opportunity, he had better athletes than nearly everyone he faced. Plus he left town with millions, not a raw deal at all

He got a raw deal in that Texas wasn't what people assumed they were. Mack Brown had done a **** poor job of recruiting at the tail end of his tenure, and the program didn't have the talent one would expect. Strong was a poor cultural fit for the kids there, and you saw that the tough love, no nonsense personality that works on kids in South Florida, didn't work there. The kind of kid that signs with Texas is used to having his butt kissed, and Strong wasn't going to do that. I think he's better off at USF, and he should do well there, for he will be working with the kind of student-athlete that will respond to his approach.

This, and He didn't have the QB at UT to run the Pro Style Offense He wanted to run, & the OC to run the Spread with the athletic QBs UT had at the time. If you remember, He was scrambling for a Spread OC towards the end of His tenure.

Strong should've stayed at UL one more year and parlayed that job into the UF job.

As a USF grad, most of us were already fans of other state schools before USF ever considered starting a football team. That plus a lack of outside fans fans who also are fans of other state schools like The U and no real tradition is their challenge. They are considering building an on campus stadium which would be a big plus like it was for UCF. As a grad, I am more interested in other games on Saturdays than a USF vs an AAC opponent. That said Go Bulls!

This. The reason nobody traveled to horrible Birmingham to watch a D- bowl game is because most USF alumni aren't USF football fans. They haven't even been playing football for 20 years yet and most of that time they'v been unremarkable. I wouldn't go to Birmingham to see Miami play if somebody gave me the tickets for free. Why would you expect people to show up in droves to see the Bulls play there?

The real issue with a lot of these lower tier bowl games is that the schools rarely sell their allotment of tickets and end up having to eat the cost. I'm not sure how many of you guys have been watching these early bowl season games but I'm yet to see one with even half the stadium full yet. Even if the game turns out to be entertaining, it's unrealistic to expect people to travel and buy tickets to meaningless games in middle of nowhere towns.
