Although I agree, going 3 and out kills any defense, I think it is definitely more than that with these programs that play tempo.

Just a heads up, USC ran 69 plays against San Jose State. The time of possession difference was 32 seconds. USC didn’t have a single 3 and out drive besides the drive that it only took 3 plays to score a touchdown. They went 9-12 on third downs and one of the three third downs they didn’t convert got converted on 4th down.

It’s got NOTHING to do with “tempo”. It’s about a defense that doesn’t get stops. People like to blame the successful side of the ball for the other side’s failures. That’s some Al Golden ****.

My post doesnt disagree with this on macro level, I am talking about this individual situation that it doesnt apply. Lincoln doesnt really run high tempo and he runs the ball at a great clip in his offense and is very efficient. Its one of top offenses everywhere he has been. The defense just sucks.. they got to hold that and I can get behind Lincoln needs to take better emphasis as head guy in charge

The rule sets, as stated even by rules committees to increase scoring, have become incredibly weighted in favor of the Offense.

IMHO, its essentially at the point some of these infractions are beyond what is humanly possibly for defensive players to mitigate.

When you have an unbalanced sides trying to equate a "fair" outcome, one of the only ways to do this is to then further skew a component of the equation to offset the imbalance.

Other than rebalancing the rule sets, the only way I can think of to help a defense is to mot have them on the field in the first place. The way you do that is by keeping control of the ball and clock with your offense and/or putting so much pressure on the opposing offense with scoring, they are forced to make dumb mistakes.

The rule changes are skewed to favor offenses so you think the answer is to handicap your own offense? Teams don’t go fast just for the sake of being fast. They go fast because their offenses are far more efficient when not giving the opponent’s defense a chance to rest and substitute. By purposely slowing your offense down, you are literally making it harder for them.

Besides, like I already posted earlier. SJSU didn’t score 28 points because of USC’s offense. They ran 69 plays. That would have put them at 82nd in the nation in number of plays run per game last season. USC ran 72.5 plays per game last year. The exact same amount as Miami. Their defense sucks because they don’t get stops. Not because their offense is too good.
 
People are conflating the quality of a defense with sheer volume of opportunity.

It might be true that an uptempo pace makes a defense look worse in traditional stat categories. But that doesn’t mean the quality of the defense has gotten worse. There’s just more opportunity now.

This is what modern analytics adjust for stuff like pace of play.

Tennessee had the 56th defense the year before Heupel. 90th offense.

Last year they had the number 1 offense and 27th defense.

And that’s with the massive transfer exodus after 2020 and only one full recruiting class.

Tempo does not hurt the quality of your defense. And certainly only has a positive impact on the overall quality of your team.

Tennessee is a far better team playing this style, then they were under the King of “control the clock, pound the ball, protect the defense” that they had before him.

We did get to see it first hand

A lot of people remember Lashlee in a different light than was the reality because Gattis was so bad. I liked Lashlee a lot but we couldn’t convert a 3rd and short to save our lives and our defense got killed by our inability to move the chains at times

But it’s a give and take you get with it because when it’s clicking it sure is fun to watch
 
It's a good thing they're in the Wac-12. Giving up 28 to San Jose State is a red flag.

I'm not certain I said or implied handicapping Miami's (or anyone's) offense.

Having the ability to control the ball and keep your offense on the field is hardly a liability, unless I'm missing something.

Why did Miami struggle to convert on third and short? Was it a system/style or was it personnel? Because they still sucked on third and short last year with a completely different style of offense. It’s almost like the plays you call don’t matter when your line gets shoved backwards.

Miami’s defense was statistically better in 2021 than it was in 2022. So changing to a more deliberate style of offense didn’t help the defense either.

We also weren’t nearly as good as people remember in 2021. Lots of revisionist history when it comes to Lashlee

But whatever. Pretty sure we have highlighted sucking for a long time enough I suppose

Look at the offensive numbers in 2019 and 2022 and compare them to the numbers in 2020 and 2021.If anybody has made chicken salad out of chicken **** at Miami it was Lashlee.
