Urban Meyer on Miami Job

If these sellouts stay at home more instead of making these other southern schools rich, the Florida 3 would be back on top.

A few points that this board seems to be making
- We need a really good coach to win
- We need to recruit our own backyard to win

If we were to rate our coaching staff and players as a percent of championship-caliber we would get something like this
coaching * players = championship caliber

If we believe that our players are not the problem because they make NFL rosters then the only plausible explanation is our coaches really suck. Now if we consider the count of coaches we have had we will eventually approach the point where we should have one in the top 50%. This means that either our talent is not what we think it is or we literally are hiring the worst coaches in America.

It's both.

Why does anybody believe that Miami's talent is great?
We're not signing the elite South FLA kids. Generally we're signing kids that would go on to schools like Georgia Tech or Pitt, not even. We ain't getting the kids that are going to Bama, UGA, Clemson, etc.

University of Miami's talent is NOT where it would be if we had good coaches/recruiters.

I get what you are saying but they wouldn't be dumpster fires if Derrick Henry, Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley, Trent Richardson, Deion Cain, CJ Spiller, Sony Michel, Sammy Watkins, etc etc had stayed home in recent years.

UF isn't a dumpster fire currently and look at how few of the top recruits in Florida they have. In GA, OH, LA, TX many of those kids have some sort of state pride and play there regardless.
These players in Florida are a different breed but talent wise they are very RAW. That's why they excel so much because in other states those kids have **** near peaked.

I do blame these programs for the hiring of multiple idiots at the HC position though.
The lame ADs of these schools ruined what the legendary coaches of the past did in FLORIDA.

South Florida is THE MOST RECRUITED REGION IN THE UNITED STATES.

Every year more kids from the tri-county area sign D1 scholarships than any other region in the country.

The state of Florida had FIVE PLAYERS DRAFTED IN THE FIRST ROUND THIS YEAR. (4 from Broward, 1 from Dade)

Those kids didn't stay at home BECAUSE OUR SCHOOLS WERE DUMPSTER FIRES.

They were dumpster fires mostly before 1983 too. It took quality coaches to keep the talent instate and develop it. Players didn't leave as often back then but its going to take the talent taking a chance at home to give any Big 3 coach a real chance at knocking off the Elite 4 of Bama, LSU, OSU and Clemson

Hiring a good coach for a good/great job with a phenomenal back yard does wonders for the coach. Ask Pete Carrol. What was he thought of before USC? Where was he? He was their 4th choice.

You want to point out bum coaches at a great job as if that makes sense. Meanwhile - COACHES like Pete and Jimmy totally disagree with you. What did Butch forget how to evaluate? The Miami job propelled his career to new heights. Gave access to jobs he wouldn’t get anywhere else. BUTCH says this....

Dennis, Jimmy and. Butch ALL say Miami made their careers. But,,, you know better.

So, was Bama a **** job because Shula sucked? Did Saban go to Kentucky to compete for ships or Bama? Wait for it.

Explains why wekiva became so good recently. If I’m not mistaken their hc has miami ties and it’s either wekiva or apopka for schools in that area.

And... respectfully the coaches are like the kids. They’re looking out for themselves. Always have their hands out. Constantly playing the game. They are not an educated bunch/high IQ on average. They are not loyal to their high schools or any one university. The kids grow up having the worst possible mentors on average when it comes to brains and character. The ones who have success do it because of raw talent, not because of the coaching and leadership they received in south Florida high schools. Talented kids far outweigh talented coaches. It works against the kids, due to the sheer numbers in this talent rich region. There are exceptions, but they are few.

Best or not best is a function of how you define it. LA and AL do just fine on a per capita basis.

The real challenge is what Texas highlights. Texas produces plenty of talent, and they have great facilities. So why don’t they win? Probably two things, in addition to general coaching. Culture, and math. They have their pick of too big a pool too early on, and as a result have never prioritized or gotten good at evaluations. And relatedly, their culture isn’t conducive to winning and they have never been able to fix it. They take the best TX kids as rising juniors. Too early. Too entitled. No bueno.

It’s evals and culture at UM, too. I have been yelling at the sky about evals since Coker. But Meyer has a point on skill and culture. You guys all take a few comments and try to turn it into a your view vs his view debate. Nothing he said should be remotely surprising. We have evaluated very poorly for a long while. Our program was built (and rebuilt) by guys whose eval skills were unparalleled. You consistently say you think it’s easy to win at Miami if a coach is just okay. And so you are consistently surprised by our dismal results.

Meanwhile, the world ain’t waiting for us to get our act together. And life ain’t fair. Alabama’s support resources dwarf ours. You don’t think that matters?

Huh? His comment was about the local player pools at two championship programs. We are responding directly to that, with statistics.

Meanwhile, you are pontificating about evaluations and support staff which Meyer didn’t even touch upon and which nobody is arguing about.

Florida players don’t receive the best high school coaching. Everyone agrees with Meyer on that point.

But there is no evidence that negatively impacts your ability to win. Quite the opposite. The evidence shows that Florida programs win the most championships, Florida high schools produce the most pros and out-of-state coaches like Meyer spend tons of money to sign Florida players.

That’s the debate here. Does relying on Florida players inhibit your ability to win? The evidence is clear. It doesn’t.

Mullen is a good coach but just a decent recruiter (which is why I was meh on him when he was mentioned for the Miami job. Still, enduring Manny is making buddy look like Knute Rockne). Florida will look the part for what Mullen is.

Say what you want, but players in Florida WANT TO WIN!!!!!!!

They are not in the business of taking L’s propping up garbage coaches to satisfy the misguided loyalties of fans with no real skin in the game.
