*UPDATE: Flips to UNC *DB Kenton Dopson III commits to Miami

Def about NIL. Same thing happened to Flowers… he reclassified and we had spent all this dollars on transfers already. Of course we wanted him but couldn’t pay him.

With regards to this kid, likely similar story. But also know while we may have money we always have to compare his deal to the guys on the team… bc you know it’s coming if we overpay.

Same thing on Russell. We pay him what Cuse is and our entire WR room gets a raise….

They really choose who they want to pay. The evals have to fit the price. Highly ranked players are the most expensive but sometimes overvalued
Exactly this.

Let’s say our WR payscale is between $250K to $800K (just hypothetical, I have no idea what the pay scale is). Russell has a $1.5M offer from Syracuse.

We match.

So going into the transfer portal season in a few months, we have an incoming freshman making far more than anyone in the room. At minimum that’s a morale problem. It’s also a cause for players to start looking elsewhere if Miami doesn’t give everyone a raise. So we do. And now our WR room is exponentially more expensive.

But wait! There’s more!

Let’s say we want a five star WR for the 2027 class. We set the floor with Russell at $1.5M. He’ll want the same or more.

But wait! There’s more!

You have rapid wage escalation in one position group. That starts to make other position groups jealous. Now you have to start giving raises to non WRs, over and above what you have planned.

Suddenly your NIL spending can grow in ways you did not anticipate.

his picks the last 2 weeks have been like this....one was on NOTRE DAAME QB COMMIT NOAH GRUBBS ON AN END ZONE SLANT.

Him n Mali Toney were 2 reclasses that im not against ....those 2 have done all they need to do at the hs level imo.

Like i said Pay whatever drew is driving up for his NIL.

BEST CB IN SOUTH FLORIDA REGARDLESS OF CLASS AND I SAID THIS.........LAST YEAR WHEN HE WAS A SOPH.

This is what happened with Mali Toney in reference to Calvin Russel.

Mali got a bagggggggg.......him and Russell are close friends.....im not sure we had the same valuation on Russell or willing to go as high..

this is all my theory not facts... But it seemed to play out close to it so far.

Best CB in the state. I’d rather drop two corners in the class to keep him home.

It's not we like we even have to drop him…We need someone to play nickle…We need someone to play safety...Portis for instance played in the box a lot for his HS, looks like a CB or S imo.

Get this stud Dopson to UM.

I think its easy - Don't pay Russell or Cooper if at RB.

This is twice we seem to be getting screwed by reclassifications - staff needs to be more proactive in projecting that or something. I'm not saying we need to push for it, but we need to push to know the ******* plan ahead of time. This isn't something that should be a surprise. But Dopson is a dude we need to keep. The thing is we need a massive increase in Safety talent. But we should expect to lose a LOT at CB after next season, so we NEED to have that room stocked with talent in this class. And Honestly this is why Xavier Lucas at Safety or even Damari moving to safety has always made sense. Even before that if Ewald or Brody Jennings moved to Safety I think that'd probably be a good thing.

2026 DB Room:
S:
Poyser
Fitzgerald
Day
Wallace

(Markeith)

CB:
Frederique
Lucas
O'Conner
Damari
Antione
Ewald

(Ryan Mack)

+ Jaelen Waters
+Jontavius Wyman
+ Brody Jennings
+ Camdin Portis

Not sure why you’re putting Mack in parentheses. He’s been injured since HS. Before that he was as highly touted as all the other guys let’s see if he can recover from injury before writing him off.

Because it wouldn't at all be shocking if he transfered out with the desire to play...

Ironic, a stacked DB room never once has stopped one of these kids from going to Bama, Georgia, LSU, UF, Ohio State. We have ONE game where our DBs look decent and all of a sudden we’re scaring kids away?
This is what should be made and said publicly. SO WE CAN SHOW THE SFLA ATHLETE AND PARENTS THEIR HYPOCRISY. Or maybe they were getting paid all along🤔

We know its always been about money. Bama and UGA were dropping big bags pre-NIL. They didnt care about deoth charts. The money on floor at UNC is the key.

If his concern is the 4 outside corners we are rotating this year who all will be playing CFB next year, I think this works out in our favor in the end.

Chances of all 4 guys who would be starting at 9/10 P5 programs being okay with rotating again next year seems low to me. Hopefully 1 or 2 of them are starting at nickel/safety next year.

Tl;Dr there's opportunities for playing time next year here at outside corner if he's the goods, IMO

Pay him...PERIOD...stop playing with these kids and not trying to pay them AT ALL because they reclassify. Alabama almost lost Ryan Williams for the same thing. If anything Mali has shown is you know a special talent when it's there and in this age of college if YOU ain't paying...someone else WILL. You can love a college so much but when them dollars start making sense you will change all those values you feel.
He steps on campus he will be a top 4 physically imposing corner within that group. Not saying he's generational but when the opportunity to pluck a player of his caliber EARLY you do it

Pay him to what extent though?

You pay him more than OJ? Lucas? O'Connor?

I think that's the tricky part. You pay him some ridiculous dollar amount then you have to either be okay with paying everyone the same or higher (raising your NIL total) or risk losing proven commodities.

It's a tough situation because the money isn't infinite and there are other variables at play

No...you don't have to pay him to that extent but he deserves something. That's FAIR...he's virtually a HS junior. But Miami almost lost Toney because they didn't want to give him anything as well. How the school I love doesn't want to compensate anything me in a paying climate? Nobody is saying he gotta get paid 2nd team money but you have to be fair with these kids across the board
