*UPDATE: Flips to UNC *DB Kenton Dopson III commits to Miami

Agreed.

It's potentially sacrificing long-term money for short-term money, similar to what we might end up seeing with a Calvin Russell.

If it's true he's bolting to UNC because the Miami DB room is "stacked", then I don't know how this kid will be able to navigate the NFL with such a weak mindset. If you're good, you'll play regardless of who is already in the room. We just saw that in Week 1 against Notre Dame - Toney came on campus knowing three veteran transfers were deliberately paid and brought in to play meaningful snaps, there were veterans already in the room like Ray Ray (unproven but a vet. none the less). You also have Fitzgerald, who missed Spring practice, but show his ability during the summer to earn a few snaps with many more to be earned as the year progresses.

If the kid lacks the confidence to even attempt to compete, then good riddance. We've seen those local 4 stars with that attitude in this program for 20+ years, and it hasn't yielded much.
These kids are surrounded by weak minded individuals as role models. Their relatives want the bigger bad. Jaden Rashada let his dad ruin his entire future over short term money.

I guess, but the narrative that's out there from a quote from someone in his camp that he's decommitting from Miami due to competition and going to UNC for a guaranteed spot and money that seems to be a bad look (not the money part by the way).

I don't remember Toney ever hinting at that when he decommitted; instead, he came out (if I'm remembering correctly) saying that he wanted to do his due diligence since his timeline was ramped up now due to reclassifying.
i dont think this kid has a camp. Its just his dad who is a cane fan like stated.

Just match whatever NIL offers come up its pretty simple.

I'm not allowing the best cb in south florida with a high ceiling to go to ****** chapel hill or anywhere else no matter what i have committed. Especially considering we have kids committed with s potential as well. And currently have a need at safety with only 1 kid committed currently.

They need to be more dilligent earlier in finding out if these kids are reclassing. No way i as a regular poster could know it was a possibility.

Just continue to recruit the kid as a priority as unc made him that right away, we should continue to do the same and match whomever's nil.

There usually arent kids ready to reclass he is one of them from a size an iq standpoint.

If they were willing to pay a smoke Matthews then why not pay this kid. I just don’t get it

Don't care what happens now. Just get him to sign here on ESD if he is indeed reclassifying

I agree with you except the match whatever number UNC threw out because it depends on that number (same with Cooper and I'm guessing same with Russell).

Can't throw some ridiculous number out to match (let's say 3 million) just because UNC is desperate especially if your all-american proven CB or safety is only at 800k or something.

If UNC threw a crazy number at the kid, cool go enjoy winning 7 games a year at Chapel Hill and hope Bill's burnt NFL bridges don't hinder your draft status.

guys got to get ont he same page in recruiting department/nil with Mario to make those decisions i'm guessing.

Its probably how much they have budgeted for the year at a position , based upon the next class etc and when a reclass happens it kinds of change things....we saw that with mali toney last year. The issue with this year is ...we got a pretty solid cb class already and maybe have some flips they are working so they got to figure it all out. Im guessing fitzpatrick, Devin Jackson, probably others we dont know they are still working.

If he sticks does he push one of our cb’s out or are we taking them all regardless?
i dont have a clue. Im just like you...watching it play. With his size i think he can play safety if need be...but watching him at cb he is just to smooth and opportunistic to move...kid wipes out wrs. I personally would move Jennings back if i had to.

Was wondering if we had a safety in that group, Jennings seems to have room to grow into a safety.

yup i agree with you.

Thats the games some of these teams play as well...they tell you some random number they aint gonna get you to as well to get you to flip. We saw it with uf doing it to us with Rashada,e tc...it all sounds real good when they are in your living room telling you this...or when they walking u around in chapel hill introducing you to random donors etc.

Thats the part of NIl new recruiting you have to deal with and know when to cut losses or strive forward. Its also why sometimes kids use our name inr ecruiting ont he other side cause these other schools know we have a strong nil program and kids agents play them up on a bag...ive seen it some this cycle on us...with those longshots like tristian keys etc

Even with the cb they had commited they still took a shot at Matthews and keenon. It’s not that hard just pay the kid what you was willing to give them. They make stuff way harder than what it has to be

Ironic, a stacked DB room never once has stopped one of these kids from going to Bama, Georgia, LSU, UF, Ohio State. We have ONE game where our DBs look decent and all of a sudden we’re scaring kids away?
If our DB room wasn’t stacked it would be, “I need to see what Miami does on the field…”

This is why we recruit nationally 😂

Def about NIL. Same thing happened to Flowers… he reclassified and we had spent all this dollars on transfers already. Of course we wanted him but couldn’t pay him.

With regards to this kid, likely similar story. But also know while we may have money we always have to compare his deal to the guys on the team… bc you know it’s coming if we overpay.

Same thing on Russell. We pay him what Cuse is and our entire WR room gets a raise….

They really choose who they want to pay. The evals have to fit the price. Highly ranked players are the most expensive but sometimes overvalued
