Unpopular opinion on TVD

TVD works hard, bleeds orange & green and is a great role model. It's too early to tell yet whether he can be highly competitive at this level. It's also too early to tell whether he will be the starter or Jake Garcia (when he's healthy). Garcia looks like a 1st round talent to me but we shall see.

What I do know for sure is that a great kid like TVD who works his a@@ off to improve and win games for the U deserves our unwavering support (whether he ends up being the future QB1 or not). By all indications, he's a tremendous role model, super hard worker and great teammate. Let's support him whether he ends up ultimately being QB1 or not.

It's been a pattern for every QB going all the way back to Kaaya. These starts are not all on the QB. Remember the bowl game last year? ****, just about every game outside of a small handful the last 4 years we have been stuck in first gear for most of the first half. It's not just the QB, but the mindset of the staff. Yes, TVD has a lot to learn, but let's not pretend this is a TVD problem when every other QB we've had has had the same problem.
It’s one thing to start out slow the first drive or two but we’re talking about entire halves of football where we have less than 100 total yards of offense. 94 against UVA and 80 against UNC. We had one possession in the first half against UNC where the offense gained more than 10 yards. I get that slow starts aren’t solely on the QB but when he’s only completing like 30% of his first half attempts, you have to put a lot of that blame on him.

Anybody giving up on the kid is irrational. I think he has looked very very bad in 4/8 quarters he’s played. He’s been here 2 years. Red shirt freshman qbs have lit it up all across college football over the years. His mechanics are worse than rosiers. Not giving up on the guy but I’m certain that Garcia would have been brought into the game in both uva and or UNC and he would have ran with the opportunity and been the qb of the future. Not giving up on tvd but right now I don’t see how hes the qb of the future.
Agree but basically you have given reasons to move on but still “haven’t given up”. He is not the future.

Only reason he’s out there is because he has Matocha behind him. If Garcia were healthy he would have gone in and not looked back.

TVD is a gamer, he’s tough, good arm, etc. but that isn’t always enough to separate the decent from the great.

He is decent. But that’s about it and the most you can expect.

Two games where it was tail of two halves for him, but I like what I’ve seen so far from a guy who’s just starting to play.

He reminds me of a more recent Michigan State style quarterback for some reason in terms of what he could be. Athletic enough, good enough arm strength, etc. But has to get going sooner and obviously work more on his decision making. But there’s a lot there to have an interesting career here.

He doesn’t have the immediate *** appeal of the gun slinging Garcia (which we only know about in high school, practice or playing Popeyes tech earlier this year. We have no clue what he will be like against real competition) so it will be interesting to see how that battle develops.
Was thinking he looks like a Big 10 qb to me.

I haven't had the nerve to rewatch both games (UVA and UNC) but during both games I thought Lashlee called the games differently in the first halves v. the second halves. I dont know if that's true but I got that sense.

I though Lashlee would have done more early in the UNC game to help TVD grow comfortable playing in his first road game. Easy throws out of the backfield, easy throws out to the flats, etc. with the hope of developing some rhythm for TVD. Unfortunately that wasn't case in either game.

When your first pass attempt of the game is on 3 and 9, you aren't giving your inexperienced QB (**** any QB for that matter) a chance to be successful. Couple that with back to back similarly called drives while the defense gives up a score, you put a lot of unnecessary pressure on your QB.

I dont know if TVD is the goods, but I don't think Lashlee has done him any favors early in games.
They threw a pass on the very first play on offense. Two of the first three plays called were passes. Vandyke attempted 16 passes in the first half and there were only 8 called running plays. There were also 3 more pass plays called that didn’t count because of UNC penalties. TVD had one scramble and one sack so technically they ran the ball 10 times in the first half and threw it 19. They threw the ball 10 times on first down in the first half. It’s not like they were only throwing on third and long. I mean, first down throws are the easiest ones and they certainly tried to do that as much as possible.

Obviously, my recall is off (way off). What were calls/throws?

I agree with you first down throws are easier but that depends on what the call is. I dont recall if those early first down throws were simple throws and calls or not.

I'm not saying it's good. I'm saying it's not unique to a TVD lead team. We have seen this with every QB we've had the last several years. Now I'm not saying he looked good, but it's on the coaching staff to have the whole team ready to play. QB included. Something is horribly wrong with the staff and getting the team ready to play. The WHOLE team.

He handed off to Harris who turned and tossed it back to him. He missed the throw to Smith I believe. Would have been a nice 15-20 yard gain.

Your opinion is the popular opinion. No one is counting TVD out by simply judging his performances. Don’t have to guilt people into liking TVD personally, we’re cool just judging his outcomes/performances.

He may not jump off the page with his talent but dammit he cares!! Who was the last QB to get emotional on the sideline after a INT??!! ……………………………………………………….EXACTLY! Give me the guys that plays with passion and emotion over your everyday 5 star guy who is on the yellow Brick road to the NFL Combine!

Honestly, I’d have to go back to see exactly what was called but our offense usually features a ton of short passes regardless of who’s playing quarterback. I mean King is technically the most accurate QB in school history and he’s hardly Aaron Rodgers. It’s because we run a ton of screens and short passes into the flats. It’s not really a vertical offense with tons of low percentage deep passes. Although that seems to be an area where Van Dyke thrives. His downfield passes look good

So much slicing and dicing of TVD's performance but he's put us in a position to win both games. Should have beaten UVA. And we were at the 20 with plenty of time b/4 the tipped ball lands in UNC's lap (because bad things happen to bad teams).

Of greater concern than Garcia vs. TVD is an OL that can't run the ball. Neither kid deserves to have to be in a position where he has to single-handedly beat the other team. TVD threw it 45 **** times on Saturday.

I really appreciate his effort and resiliency. He did make some tight contested throws, but he also made some head scratchers as well.
Also, there's something weird about his mechanics. I feel like he needs to work on his footwork and release more. Should be coachable right?

That is interesting that people are noting how tall he is but he seemingly has more balls batted down. Maybe a by product of his mechanics?

Garcia to me looks like he is more of a complete package QB. The only thing that worries me about Garcia is decision making, but I think with experience that usually gets a lot better.

I'm not convinced that he can't develop into a top tier QB. The kid keeps his cool, has the physical tools and has flashed. I know a lot of people have already bailed on him because he wasn't immediately Johnny Unitas, but I think we'll figure out if he is a long term solution over the next 3-4 games.

If he can continue to learn and improve, he might be our answer at that position.

TBD...
I agree, I think the kid is a winner. Just the fact defeat was so devastating for him is an indication of his desire...reports said he cried and yes, grown men cry!
