Unpopular opinion on TVD

And btw, TVD played well w/o a flipping running game which ideally helps a 1st year starter.

I also enjoy that everyone has decided TVD's fate after 2 games but has crowned Jake after 0 games. (Haven't we made this same mistake w/ like every QB recruit the last 20 years?)

Anyways, we got what seems like 2 good QBs in that room. There's talent for a new coach here IMO.
Didn’t you know? The backup quarterback is ALWAYS better on CIS.

That’s on the OC. He needs to call plays that gets him comfortable and in a rhythm just like any OC in history. Our OC apparently thinks that’s some bull****.
I guess but I don’t see the difference in play calling from first to second half. I see him sailing balls and missing guys in the first half and then completing those same throws in the second half. Which is weird because he doesn’t look flustered at all. He actually looks pretty calm and seems to be able to avoid the rush fairly easily while not getting rattled. That’s something that even good QBs struggle with.

Agreed. That's why I'm not that concerned about the inaccuracy on a few throws. It seems to me more jitters than an actual issue.

IMO, it's too many of these few throws. I'm not sold on him either way, you'd be a crazy person to think you could be after 2 games. But to me, accuracy is the absolute #1 most important attribute for a QB. You give me a kid who can throw the ball through a tire from 20 yards away every time, and I'll beat your brains in. I don't care how mobile he is or how strong his arm is. In college, the windows are MUCH wider than the professional level. An accurate passer can absolutely thrive in just about any system.

Tyler has missed far too many easy throws to me so far. Maybe it is just jitters, I'm not sure. But there were probably 10 throws last week if not more that were wildly inaccurate and had they been on time, we'd have either completed passes or given kids a lot of opportunity for YAC. The plays are there. He's making a lot of them, but if we're looking for a program changing type kid you can win big with, he needs to be much more accurate in the short and intermediate game.

I wish someone had the guts to rewatch and find out how many throws were just bad or inaccurate lol.

Maybe Lashlee can get him some screens early and see if it buys him some early confidence. 3 and outs are just not good, particularly with the way our d is playing. I'd love to see Rooser and Brashard get some touches on the open field.

The problem has been early in games since he took over. So maybe there is something to the nervous narrative, I'm not sure. And the defense certainly hasn't been great or even good, but you just can't start games completely invisible on offense and expect your defense to shut people out, especially against good offensive teams like UVA and UNC.

Against UNC, here's how we started on offense:

3 and out gaining 1 yard
7 plays gaining 8 yards, but we get a FG because UNC commits 3 penalties
3 and out gaining 3 yards
4 plays gaining 11 yards, drive ends in an INT

This is a quarter and a half of "production". 17 offensive plays for 23 yards. Against a terrible defense. What???? We're lucky to even be remotely in the game after this, thankfully we got a pick 6 and they gave us 3 points on all the dumb penalties, or it's 28-0. I don't care how good or bad your defense is, you can't run 17 plays for 23 yards with a turnover on your first 4 drives of a football game. Mind you, UNCs first 6 drives, they scored 4 TDs, threw a pick 6, and punted once. As usual, there is just no symmetry allowed on this team. When the offense plays well, the defense is god awful. When we get some stops, the offense can't get out of their own way. God forbid anything is ever allowed to work in unison.

And then look at UVA:

3 and out gaining 5 yards
3 and out gaining 6 yards
1 play for -1 yard and a safety
4 plays gaining 13 yards and a punt
9 plays gaining 18 yards and a punt

Again, over a quarter and a half, 20 plays for 41 yards. Just dreadful. We're lucky to only be down 9-0 and have a shot to be in the game. Again, the defense plays reasonably well, the offense can't do a ******* thing.

At the P5 level your QB can be off on a couple throws a game, not more than half. Against NC, he had a lot of time and was still having accuracy issues and we're talking real bad throws.

I’m out until proven otherwise but not close minded to that happening. Everybody talks about his tools but I don’t see a ton other than that he’s tall. He’s very clunky on his feet, arm is average. I both like and dislike that he closes strong. Is he learning and adjusting? Or not prepared?

Doesn’t seem like a disaster. It’s not an instant no, but I don’t see a ton of talent when I look at him.

I was willing to write off the poor first half against Virginia provided it didn’t happen again against UNC, but…well.

If it happens a third time it’s a pattern.

Why are so many of his balls ending up in the dirt? The dude is 6'4. 5 yard passes to the flat should be phsycially impossible to end up there. If his throw to Knighton on the final drive doesn't end up at his feet we probably win that game.

He's flashed some good but has double the flashes of really bad. Him and Garcia should be once again splitting time once Garcia comes back. Especially considering we won't be playing for anything.

Needs to start warming up in the bullpen. Can’t take quarters or halves to get rolling while missing throws and making poor decisions with the football
Every QB we've played has had slow starts the last few years. They all have one thing in common.

It's been a pattern for every QB going all the way back to Kaaya. These starts are not all on the QB. Remember the bowl game last year? ****, just about every game outside of a small handful the last 4 years we have been stuck in first gear for most of the first half. It's not just the QB, but the mindset of the staff. Yes, TVD has a lot to learn, but let's not pretend this is a TVD problem when every other QB we've had has had the same problem.

He’s flashed some skills but still looks very inconsistent. Back to back games it’s taken him a half to get comfortable and you just can’t do that if you want to win. His delivery is a bit slow but he’s got a nice arm and his touch on downfield throws is pretty nice. He gives the receivers a chance to make a play or draw a PI penalty. The poor reads are definitely an experience issue. I understand there are redshirt freshmen QBs who get everything right away but they’re the exception, not the rule.
I haven't had the nerve to rewatch both games (UVA and UNC) but during both games I thought Lashlee called the games differently in the first halves v. the second halves. I dont know if that's true but I got that sense.

I though Lashlee would have done more early in the UNC game to help TVD grow comfortable playing in his first road game. Easy throws out of the backfield, easy throws out to the flats, etc. with the hope of developing some rhythm for TVD. Unfortunately that wasn't case in either game.

When your first pass attempt of the game is on 3 and 9, you aren't giving your inexperienced QB (**** any QB for that matter) a chance to be successful. Couple that with back to back similarly called drives while the defense gives up a score, you put a lot of unnecessary pressure on your QB.

I dont know if TVD is the goods, but I don't think Lashlee has done him any favors early in games.
