UNLV Matt Sluka-Sitting Out Due To NIL Dispute

The **** we’re seeing now doesn’t even happen in professional football, but some of ya’ll swear we don’t need CFB reform to have some sort of semblance & order. Smh
Reform is too light a term. We need it all burned down with the NCAA in ashes.

But this is a fail by the agent. If this was in writing, there would be a system in place to enforce it.

This has nothing to do w/ the NCAA & everything to do w/ this is what everyone wanted w/o thinking things all the way through, & the unintended consequences that comes along w/ it. From the ambiguous language w/ NIL, to the vast loop holes in the transfer portal. The NCAA has been completely hands off letting **** become the wild, Wild West. All was fun & games when the puppet masters behind the scenes felt like they were in control, buying up all their favorite players to come to their favorite schools, until they realized these jits can hit the exit button, flirt w the portal at any given time to strong arm for more $.

The entire **** is broken, & as a CFB fan, not just a Hurricanes fan, it’s becoming way too much. Again, we’re not even seeing these shenanigans at the pro level. Enough is enough & reform is needed.

Statement from the NCAA on today's news around UNLV QB Matthew Sluka's NIL situation:
"Unfortunately there is little oversight or accountability in the NIL space and far too often promises made to student-athletes are broken."

you blew it GIF

While I tend to agree with you, there have been a lot of NIL deals IN WRITING that have not been honored, the most egregious of which was Florida's deal with Jaden Rashada.

We can talk about the separate roles that the schools and the collectives should play. And that is fair. Miami is at the TIP-TOP of this game.

But a lot of other schools are not, and a lot of these kids (including Jaden Rashada) tend to believe coaches who tell them that the "collective guys" will finish up the negotiations and commit everything to writing.

Right or wrong, a coach told a portal recruit that he would get $100K. Right or wrong, the kid has only gotten $3K. This case is out in the open now, but I've heard that quite a few "verbal offers" have not been committed to writing and/or converted to cash, and at schools a lot bigger and more sophisticated in NIL than UNLV is.

You can play in 4 games prior to redshirting. If UNLV wanted to keep playing the "but you didn't get it in writing", this was gonna happen either this week or next week.

Not taking sides here, it's a complicated mess. But I understand.

You're exactly right. Its a broken system. Reform has to happen. I just worry its too late. I can't imagine some of the wealthier schools like Texas wanting legislation or reform to stop them from buying up everything in their path. Everybody loves the free market.. as long as they're the ones benefiting from it.

Maybe I missed it, but was the NCAA forced to get rid of the sit for a year transfer policy? I understand that its unfair. But reinstating it and forcing the courts to shoot it down later might be the ONLY thing that prevents this **** from getting worse.

I'll give a doomsday scenario.

If a player wants to get paid more, what's preventing him from holding out before his team's most important game of the season? If he goes public about it, then what? If he's got an NFL future, the league isn't going to hold it against him.

Just look at the fallout in that scenario. If they don't pay him, the school risks losing money. The conference risks losing money. The network risks losing money. Even the betting market is affected.

Or.. they can pay him.

Any reform means giving back power to the NCAA. Which would be insane for a million reasons that we all know.

Blow it all up. When you create a new system with collective bargaining, it is easy to ensure binding contracts and restricted player movement.

That’s ur assumption, & I’ve made it perfectly clear in the other thread what reform looks like, & it doesn’t involve the NCAA.

If reform means blowing up the NCAA, then we’re speaking the same language. I just don’t want half-measures where the NCAA controls enforcement.

There is a better model out there, but the current system is way better than the last one.

So just because he played three games he decided to redshirt because his NIL value went up…….. so what you are saying is that Cam Ward can hold out on Miami because we are 3-0 and he can ask for more money than we gave him because he’s clearly worth it? I’m confused? @canesupremacy
It’s clearly a new wrinkle in the NIL. Free agents gonna free agent. Mo’ money, Mo’exposure, Mo and better system for his skill set. Brave New World

This is a bit much man. Though I will admit two things can be true.

He absolutely wins games with his legs. But he's a horrible passer.

Not only are his numbers dead last in the FBS among starting QB's, they're also career lows. And its not like 2024 is an outlier. His passing didn't exactly light the world on fire at Holy Cross either.
100% agree.

But he still wins, granted both coaching staffs know what his limitations are and can utilize his advantages. It’s not a coincidence.

All encapsulated, I can find way worse options at QB, even at the P4 level.

Very happy players can be justly compensated now, but hate all this NIL craziness. No clue what the answer is, but hope it gets ironed out sooner than later.

& UNLV just lost another player.
4th string RB, previously transferred from NC State.

Apparently a horrible coincidence when factoring in Sluka news, was allegedly always going to enter to seek playing time.

Buddy must have been like, “god****, bad timing”
