Tennessee? I get the others but Tenn is a shocker. Also outside the top three the next 9 are interchangeable so we are right up there

Not shocked. Tons of alumni and a statewide fanbase. Massive stadiums for gate revenue and their revenue generating teams are usually competitive. Their football team doesn’t even have to be good and they’ll get 95k at Neyland. No pro teams in the state until late 90s so most families grew up with the Vols as their only team. It’s real deep here

Considering the size of the school
Miami comes in just after Notre Dame and USC. For private schools USC it's certainly bigger. Notre Dame may be a little bit bigger but has a much more national footprint. And following
And guarantee both have a lot more programs. For instance Notre Dame has men's and women's lacrosse.

Anyone else surprised to see NC State so low? I thought they would be more in the middle.

Uhealth money going to athletics would appear as athletics revenue for this accounting purpose
I doubt there is a direct channel. UHEALTH is part of UM. University spending that goes into this pot comes from a variety of sources. Of course, if the health system was a fiscal drag, it would suck resources of of the UM pocketbook, creating financial stress in kany places.

Is that a typical fiscal year for a school? While you know to normalize the data, I have my doubts that the list maker did likewise.

Can't speak to public schools, which may follow STATE fiscal years, and I can't account for schools that are on quarters instead of semesters (i.e., Stanford). But for a private university, you would usually follow your own sense of what is best for accounting purposes. The easiest "break" for a fiscal year would be the end of spring semester, because you have a few light summer months to close your year-end financials.

When I worked for an entity that was involved in auto racing, the last race of the year was held in November. Thus we had a fiscal year that ended November 30th.

Now that I'm with a company that files tax returns in all 50 states, I am occasionally surprised by unusual fiscal periods of certain local counties and cities. I couldn't even begin to GUESS how they landed on some of these dates.
