You are probably right, but if he goes 7-5 or worse and doesn't get fired **** could get pretty ugly. The cries of racism would be deafening.
That's what I was wondering. Being considered racist in Miami is the last thing the university needs.
This just sounds ridiculous. I can see Luke crying about it on his blog but most rational folk would know results were achieved under different circumstances from one another.
Shannon was promoted from within, was familiar with the players, kept the same systems so no learning curve needed, didn't have to deal with a NCAA investigation for 3 years or anything of the sorts, had shoddy recruiting classes the previous 2 classes before he was fired and was on track for another lackluster 2011 class, entered the 2010 season with a veteran QB and solid talent and proceeded to go 7-6 losing culminating with an embarrassing loss at home to FSU.
Compare that to the circumstances Golden dealt with.
Had to start from scratch with no familiarity with the players, implemented new schemes which require a learning curve, was blindsided by Shapiro allegations and subsequent 3 year NCAA investigation which had far reaching effects on player and staff moral, recruiting, etc. Showed excellent leadership and was a great representative of UM through all of this. Has built up good will among the local HS coaching community through camps and other relationship building events, hauled by all indications his best recruiting class is entering his 4th year with a QB that has never taken a snap in a college game.
Comparing the 2 circumstances only a true racist with an agenda like Luke would cry racism if Golden goes 7-5 and isn't fired.
So stop with the ridiculousness already. Pulling the race card is a sign of desperation.
Besides it will set back efforts of hiring black coaches as School leaders would begin to wonder if hiring black coaches is worth dealing with the racism claims by those who feel some sort of social injustice if they ever ended up firing a black coach.
It's not always the accurate opinion that gets the most attention. Aren't you the same guy saying in the Donald Sterling thread that while what he said wasn't wrong, it will still look unfavorably? How is that different from this hypothetical situation?
As far as comparing Randy to Golden, all your compliments of Golden are mostly off field and NCAA related. He handled to the NCAA scandal with class and dignity and was invaluable during the entire episode. Kudos to him. That doesn't win games. Did it hurt him in terms of recruiting? Of course it did, yet he was still pulling top 15 classes after the 2011 class he had to hustle in a hurry. Are we a top 15 team so far? No. His hand selected QB hasn't taken a snap? That's rough, yet he has a year in the system and should be developed into a quality player but no one feels comfortable with him at the helm. Is it because he goofed off? Who's job is it to keep him in line and focus? The head coach.
I'm not a Randy Shannon coach fan at all, but you point out that Golden has an advantage over him in every facet of coaching including recruiting. Golden has brought in better players than Randy, in spite of the NCAA, and nobody is debating that. Yet we are following the exact same template that Shannon followed against similarly weak schedules.
I still argue about whether Golden has a strong relationship with the South Florida community. He apparently doesn't have ones with American Heritage, Champagnant, Dwyer, etc..
But this all irrelevant to the point I was trying to make. Like it or not, Uncle Luke wields a lot of influence in the community. When he speaks, the city listens. If he starts depicting us as racist, however extremely inaccurate that statement may be, it is going to hurt us. It's all about perception in Miami. Being called racist will hurt us a lot more than any NCAA cloud did.
I recognize that Randy and Golden had different situations. I also stand by my statement that Golden should be fired if he goes 7-5 or worse and doesn't win the Coastal and I don't think that for racial reasons. I'm not pulling any race card, but influential people with loud voices will if this situation arises. Don't confuse my worrying about how a racist tag will affect the school with thinking that it deserves a racist moniker. If Golden stumbles this year, he should be fired based on his win-loss record, not that his Black predecessor had the same record trend under easier circumstances. But as you and I have discussed for three threads now, this is Golden's year to prove that he will rise to a 10 win season and win the Coastal and you are of the opinion that he will do just that.
