transfer qb vs younger guy

For the teams with money there’s no reason to do this. It’s more important to have the weapons to attract the portal QB. Not saying I don’t want to hit on a stud QB from HS or multiple years cause that would be great.

Mario scored two decent QBs that have won a fair amount of games. The mercenary is just the reality of the state of the game. It's the future. No guarantee of developing a kid who may ultimately jump ship anyway.

To me, if you spend the money on the QB, you better be able to coach, motivate, provide therapy, and call good plays for him to get your money's worth.

I think if Mario felt like Nickel was the guy next year he would’ve seen more reps.

Also we’re not being coached by Dabo with some hard on for the old days and ignoring the portal. We’re trying to field the best players whether that’s portal or HS. And I think it’s hard to say Nickel is the best guy next season

could you take a few early season losses with luke nickel and allow him to develop so we're not on the qb carrousel ... or we can't wait to develop gotta stay in win now mode

nd took this approach with carr

obviously we'd have to spend crazy to insure he has a top notch defense (lb) ... maybe invest in a lineman or two (seaton, from colorado if prime hang it up)

**changed the title as i'm speaking for or endorsing nickel, i am however intrigued by the idea of getting younger guy and developing vs one year rentals**
No. New Era of football. Give me a proven portal QB every season if need be. Qb is the most important position and I dont think mario is in any place to risk taking lumps w a young guy. Maybe if he had gone undefeated this yr and won the ACC etc...but that didnt happen. Maybe dereon coleman proves to be a guy going forward but I want the best available portal QB until it proves to not be successful

Of the thirteen drafted QBs last year, eleven (85%) came from the Portal. That includes our QB, who was the #1 overall pick. Both quarterbacks in the CFP title game were one and dones. The top quarterback this year is a transfer, who we probably could have signed.

The game has changed. Young blue-chip quarterbacks are expensive and flop at a high rate. Even if they are good, there is a learning curve. It is much safer to invest money in a proven Portal quarterback and you don't have to sacrifice NFL upside.

Not sure how this is even remotely controversial at this point, even if you don't completely agree with the approach. You have to at least acknowledge it's a viable strategy. Look at the Top 10 QBs from the class of 2023. These are the kids who are true juniors, and if you're a superstar, you're looking to be a 3-and-out and NFL pick in the upcoming draft:

1. Arch Manning -- I think everyone knows this story
2. Nico Iamaleava -- Transferred from Tennessee to UCLA in a full-blown circus
3. Dante Moore -- Transferred from UCLA to Oregon. Looks to be a high NFL pick
4. Jackson Arnold -- Transferred from Oklahoma to Auburn and is terrible
5. Malachi Nelson -- Transferred from USC to Boise to UTEP. LOL.
6. Christopher Vizzina -- Has been sitting on the bench for 3 years for Clemson. Maybe 2026 starter?
7. Jaden Rashada -- LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO
8. Eli Holstein -- Transferred from Bama to Pitt and was benched for a freshman
9. Avery Johnson -- Went to K-State and has played for them for 2+ years. Decent player.
10. Austin Novosad -- Went to Oregon and has sat on the bench for 3 years

These are your highest paid QB recruits. How many of these schools have gotten an adequate return on their investment? One? I mean, maybe Avery Johnson? Has Texas gotten what they paid for from Arch? I sure as **** don't think so. 6 of the 10 aren't with their original schools, so you just flat ****ed away money and got nothing in return. And the other 2 haven't done a single thing. What does the #6 QB recruit in America demand in 2026 out of HS? I'd imagine it's a pretty penny. We good with paying that to have him sit on the bench for 3 years?

The only kid on this entire list who is a truly difference making player is Dante Moore, and he's doing it for a team that didn't sign him out of HS.

Go cheap on QB, evaluate the **** out of the position in HS, hope you can hit and develop a lower ranked (aka cheaper) kid, while you blow your big money on proven talent at the position via the portal. Literally couldn't be an easier thing to see.

You basically have to be all world the moment you step on campus. There is too much at stake year over year. You can’t rebuild every 4 years and stay competitive
