Of the thirteen drafted QBs last year, eleven (85%) came from the Portal. That includes our QB, who was the #1 overall pick. Both quarterbacks in the CFP title game were one and dones. The top quarterback this year is a transfer, who we probably could have signed.
The game has changed. Young blue-chip quarterbacks are expensive and flop at a high rate. Even if they are good, there is a learning curve. It is much safer to invest money in a proven Portal quarterback and you don't have to sacrifice NFL upside.
Not sure how this is even remotely controversial at this point, even if you don't completely agree with the approach. You have to at least acknowledge it's a viable strategy. Look at the Top 10 QBs from the class of 2023. These are the kids who are true juniors, and if you're a superstar, you're looking to be a 3-and-out and NFL pick in the upcoming draft:
1. Arch Manning -- I think everyone knows this story
2. Nico Iamaleava -- Transferred from Tennessee to UCLA in a full-blown circus
3. Dante Moore -- Transferred from UCLA to Oregon. Looks to be a high NFL pick
4. Jackson Arnold -- Transferred from Oklahoma to Auburn and is terrible
5. Malachi Nelson -- Transferred from USC to Boise to UTEP. LOL.
6. Christopher Vizzina -- Has been sitting on the bench for 3 years for Clemson. Maybe 2026 starter?
7. Jaden Rashada -- LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO
8. Eli Holstein -- Transferred from Bama to Pitt and was benched for a freshman
9. Avery Johnson -- Went to K-State and has played for them for 2+ years. Decent player.
10. Austin Novosad -- Went to Oregon and has sat on the bench for 3 years
These are your highest paid QB recruits. How many of these schools have gotten an adequate return on their investment? One? I mean, maybe Avery Johnson? Has Texas gotten what they paid for from Arch? I sure as **** don't think so. 6 of the 10 aren't with their original schools, so you just flat ****ed away money and got nothing in return. And the other 2 haven't done a single thing. What does the #6 QB recruit in America demand in 2026 out of HS? I'd imagine it's a pretty penny. We good with paying that to have him sit on the bench for 3 years?
The only kid on this entire list who is a truly difference making player is Dante Moore, and he's doing it for a team that didn't sign him out of HS.
Go cheap on QB, evaluate the **** out of the position in HS, hope you can hit and develop a lower ranked (aka cheaper) kid, while you blow your big money on proven talent at the position via the portal. Literally couldn't be an easier thing to see.
