Transfer Portal - Baseball 2025-26

JD doesn’t strike me as a strong recruiter. It’s strange for this program to be this much of an afterthought with the bigger portal names. Is the scholarship limit that much of a crutch or do these guys just not want to play for JD?

You'll find out if he's a good recruiter in the 2027 class. On offense, we need a Catcher, possibly one more infielder, and one backup outfielder. Pitching, we need more RHP and LHP pitchers

I was told that there isn't even a consideration in the building to have a competition for DeRias/Ciscar as weekend guys. They're locked in to those roles and the staff has no desire to bring in multiple guys to compete to start on weekends. We want 1 and a bunch of bullpen arms.

That will be the biggest mistake we make. Wouldn't be easy to bring in multiple anyway but we need to try.

Maybe we get lucky and land 1, like the kid from Grand Canyon or ECU, and then Evans comes back and competes for it.

no offense…but I’m really hoping this is bad info.

I’m DeRias biggest fan. I know people who coached him for years. I know his make up. But I also know our development is spotty at best. And he still needs some refinement. I expect him to be a lot more inconsistent next year unless our coaches change things up. Heck as funky as Ciscar is don’t be surprised if he comes back to earth a bit. The book is out on both of them. This is where coaches earn their money

I’d feel great if I was one of the other arms.

A lot is NIL and budget related. We're close to the bottom of the barrel in SEC/ACC/Big 12 baseball in NIL. Wake Forest doesn't really have it either and they do just fine so it can be done. They do it by selling their draft pick resume with all these 1st rounders they pump out.

Still haven't figured out if its JD's unwillingness to want to participate (Mike Ryan hinted at this on the podcast and I had heard it before) because he is old school and doesn't believe in it and/or if it is all these big $ guys backing JD to get the job just did it to get him the job and nothing more. Probably both.

Its a former player talking. He said they told kids in their exit meetings that its an internal competition and they want to grab 1 starter arm from the portal and 3-4 relievers just to supplement having no arms left that were in the 2023 class and the the draft raiding 3 of our 2024 signee arms. They're *hoping* to get someone more than a rental. Looking at and prefer guys going into their 2nd year.

They're being told the portal addition will compete with our existing arms and 2025 guys for 1 weekend spot and 1 mid-week spot. Guessing existing arms would be Evans, Fernandez, Collera and no clue what incoming arms they anticipate contributing right away. Haven't done my homework on them. To me, sounds like they feel they have penciled in 2 guys already.

Interesting. We’ve definitely heard here that NIL is there for baseball, but I guess we are not seeing it. Which is unfortunate.

I believe the Mike Ryan piece to be true. Why? Because mention of it in the other thread was deleted. Which is always intentional.

We just continue to make excuses really.

I'm not sold on DeRias as a front line weekend starter just yet! Lots of potential to become very good.A long way to becoming a consistent 6-7 innings guy.
Look at all the teams in Omaha.... every team has a dominant ACE! We need to get a portal guy, or develop from within our roster a legit Friday guy
I believe one of the incoming freshmen pitchers will become one of our four starters.
I like Evans in a relief role along with Dorn.
Can Collera even pitch this summer? I thought he was hurt?
Fernandez has to be one of the last guys on the roster. I'm guessing that he is pitching this summer trying to figure things out..,
