Track and field team rankings

In other words, Copeland has zero records…..some people man

In fairness to @SWFLHurricane, he could be talking about records he set between 89-92. Per our archives, most of the records set were after Horace left. He was a state legend in T&F prior to coming to Miami.

Honestly, sometimes I hate records broken b/c it diminishes what the predecessors have done. I’ll give an example: no one talks about how dominant Michael Johnson was in track b/c Usain broke his records. So instead of him being heralded as an all time great, he’s a footnote that’ll be lost in history.

I will give testimony that when I played ball in HS, our DC, who played a little ball in the NFL for 3 yrs for the KC Chiefs (he’s also my frat brother, ironically), was avid on us running track. He referenced Miami as a blueprint of football players who ran track & he named dropped Santana & Horace, specifically. This was in ‘99.

So, despite the info provided, if u look at the dates, majority of those records, positions 1-5, were after ‘92. SWFL could’ve been referring to what Copeland did while on campus repping The U vs. All Time. Being that his long jump record was “just” broken last yr gives credence that he was a bad man on the track.

Exactly what I meant...he (Horace) was the State 100m and Long Jump Champ in HS at Evans in Orlando as well... @Rellyrell ....the Horace of 91/92 would waste any UM player on this yrs squad in 100m....and that's 30yrs ago....

Also, I’ll be glad when we have this type of Miami speed again. Look at the names on here:

Copeland, Burns, Moss, McGee, Jones, Blades brothers, Benjamin, DVD, Leggett…

Man, this is what I’m used to. I’m used to our football players being equally gifted on the track & it showed on Saturday. Let’s be honest, Miami was the original Legion of Zoom, not the KC Chiefs. It was literally called Miami Speed.

Also, a little archive history: One of Nike’s templates was inspired by our speed. Yes, a lot of fans didn’t like the color scheme, but it was the design & material used that shifted Nike’s focus from simply aesthetics to speed performance.

Andre Johnson was the Big East 100m indoor Champ and the 60m outdoor Champ in 2002...then Won the 200m Champ at the GMAC....Santana was named the Most outstanding field performer at the 2000 Big East Champ where he ran the 60m...100m Long jump and Triple jump...Horace Copeland Won the most outstanding field performer at the 1992 NCAA track Champ.
He also was the 1992 Big East Champ in the 100m and Long jump.
Copeland also finished 5th in the nation in long jump and was an All-American. Might have been Miami's first.

Nobody has or is forgetting Johnson. Sure his times have been beat, but some legends live on. Carl Lewis FLoJo, Jesse Owens, etc.

Also, the times are always improving. Not necessarily year to year or even each decade in some cases, but times are moving down on average. With the advances in everything that goes on prior to setting foot on the track, those all time greats from the past could likely run faster in their peak today. Obviously that can't happen, but you get the point.

One thing I don't like is the speed surfaces of today and the newly developing shoes that have rapidly increased times. What's next, springs or bouncy surfaces? At some point you have to keep the integrity of the sport intact and they're pushing up against that line, some would say it's been stepped over.

It's similar to MLB when they changed the ball up, same with golf, etc. I get why they do it, but at what cost to those who came before? At least with T&F, there haven't changed distances, hurdle heights, etc. It still comes down to time and measurements for the field events.

Let me clarify; for guys like us, we know the greats…but if u hear from the newer, more casual fan of T&F, Michael J is hardly ever mentioned, & C Lewis is even less mentioned as time goes on…it’s all Usain Bolt. There’s absolutely nothing to take away from Bolt, but as u highlighted things have changed, from gear, spikes, track conditions, etc. I will add to that nutrition has changed a bit, as well.

It’s y I never just crown newer athletes as opposed to yesteryear b/c for a lot of sports, FB, B-ball, baseball, hockey, the rules have changed, including but not limited to the type of balls used….****, in baseball, even park dimensions have changed. But I get into arguments all the time w/ ppl who are sub 33 yrs old, b/c they are fixated w/ today w/o recognizing greatness that paved the way in eras where rules/eras quite possibly limited their true potential. That’s the beautiful thing about sports, too, though.

@SWFLHurricane We saw Rambo & Harley have remarkable seasons & career achievements, respectively, at The U.

Would u have either of them in ur top 10 WRs of all time to wear The U on the side of their helmet?

@Rellyrell ...Don't get me wrong. "Not" to be on a Top 10 All Time UM WR list is nothing to be ashamed about. The WR talent at UM the last 35+ yrs is staggering...just to be in the Top 15-20 is impressive in itself...

I agree; b/c at the end of the day, if our “general” top 10 guys played in today’s landscape of CFB, their #’s would be off the charts. They played in eras where the focus was more on running the ball, controlling the clock, & defenses were allowed certain leeways. Could u imagine Wayne, Moss, Brown, AJ5, Irvin, Thomas, Perriman, Blades, Hill, etc, etc playing in today’s landscape of CFB?

That’s y I don’t get too excited about raw stats vs. game play.

Pathetic that Miami's track team isn't one of the best on the country with the talent down there. In fact, having a good track team can help recruit certain recruits. Miami';s track seems to rely on the football instead of helping attract talent. Again pathetic. Being a geek is one thing..I mean you're a geek ok but a POS geek is whole other problem. These m************ can burn up grande chit with they big *** glasses.

My country ....the bahamas is closer than Broward County to Um...and we currently have the fastest MALE AND FEMALE 400m runners in the world the last 4 years or so....even closer than Jamaica.

Um would make a killing just recruiting those 2 countries.

I'm confused, everyone on this board has been saying Miami track is booty stain...

Don’t be confused, that’s a fluke early season ranking. Miami men’s track rarely finishes very high. Check the final rankings for the last few years. They struggle to stay in the top 60.

Yea Brave Davis is about sports. He comes over alot for Marlins games...especially since we have Jazz Chisholm on the roster.

This is crazy though..RUIZ is on every corner. Boy is like when Avon Barksdale took over.

That 767 stay gassed up!

That’s a totally unsubstantiated rumor. It’s more likely than not that Cobb is staying right where it is, unless someone can tell me where they’re going to put a new track/stands.
dont have a dog in this fight and dont know any rumors, but i think you could flip cobb 90 degrees where the track would running east west instead of its present north south.. they would then move greentree to run parallel and next to it. that would allow them to then extend the indoor facility to 100 yards. just a guess. Probably would have to move the parking lot running parallel to cobb.
