This is my opinion 100%. I was sweeting though that not going down at the one was going to burn us, we have that luck.

The "chip shot" FG is the XP so we made it, I have faith he would have kicked the FG at that distance. The wind was already starting to die down, he hit the XP, and I think the kid will be fine going forward.

Yeah I don’t think there’s a wrong answer

But the way our defense was playing I lean towards just score the TD and let the chips fall

A lot can go wrong on offense as well. Fumbled snaps, fumbles, presnap penalties etc

For the record, I think what he did was fine, D was dominating and no one thought they’d be able to go 75 yds in about 1:40 to score. Just asking the question.

can you imagine going down at the one kicking a fg and then missing it (already had missed 3) or getting it blocked, or an errant snap?

the same people saying he should have gone down would be the same ones calling for Mario to be fired today

our defense held them to 3 points at that point, there's no way in **** you don't score - anyone saying otherwise is trying to outthink the room

The odds of them going for two even if they scored a TD(which was unlikely considering how the defense played all day) was on the iffy side. Elko would have been fine going for OT, because the home team usually has a significant advantage in overtime, especially when they made the late comeback.

People love to assume that the FG was easy money, when in reality, there's no guarantee of anything. A bad snap, Davis slipping when planting, plenty of things can go wrong. Take the TD and ask your defense to get a stop. The defense played lights out all day, let them finish what they started.

You are also ignoring a very important factor, the fact that Marcel Reed can't consistently throw the football. TAMU had no timeouts left and they had to throw the ball. Even with things going right, we saw that the more snaps they took, the more likely it became that Reed would make a mistake, which is exactly what he did.

Odds say yes you slide after the first. Also would probably be a big ask to keep everyone alert of that. I don’t remember the yardage differential but they would’ve had to be relatively heads up to pull it off. But in a tie game, sliding down and kicking a 20 yarder as time expires is the move. A&M fans were happy we scored. So that should tell you something. We were 4 yards away from OT. If he missed the kick, so what. If people really want to fault that decision, they are are mad at the result. Not the process. Glad it all worked out in the end

As opposed to FIGURATIVELY gone for two to win?
 
Yall know if he goes down we get a new set of downs and there is basically zero chance Fletcher wasn't scoring. So I don't think it would have come down to kicking a FG.

It was absolutely the Correct call for him to go down as close to the goalline as possible after the first. Logically.

HOWEVER in no way was it WRONG for him to score the TD there given everything that had happened up to that point. Period.

Scoring the TD was absolutely acceptable. Intentionally going down was the actual Correct call to maximize our odds of winning.
 
It would have been a chip shot field goal but so was the kick that Bain blocked. No problem with getting the TD but in retrospect I think the smartest move was to split the difference- go down at the 1, try to run another minute off the clock and then punch it in. TAMU had no answer for Fletcher. I think he would have scored the TD and left less than a minute on the clock (or worst case, he doesn’t get in and we kick the FG to win as time expires). After the TD they would get the ball back with less than a minute and no time outs. Feel much more confident about keeping them out of the end zone in that situation. But that’s all Monday morning QB. In the moment I think Toney scoring was a smarter move than kicking a FG.
 
I don’t like the idea of going down and then handing the ball off again with the risk of a fumble. You either kick on the last play or score when Toney did.
 
I was fine with scoring the TD considering the context of that game, but I'm pretty sure we would have had a smaller chance to lose the game in regulation had Toney gone down at the 1. (Only way to lose in regulation going down at the 1 would be FG block for TD or a turnover that led to a TD) I don't think this is a big deal since we had a 95.4% win probability after we scored the TD.

However, there's no doubt in my mind Elko was going for 2 had they scored a TD (said as much in the GameDay thread). College 2 pt conversion % was ~46% last year. A&M couldn't run the ball, and couldn't stop us from running the ball. They also had turned the ball over 2 times and had been sacked 7 times. I think we had a much better than 54% chance to win that game in OT alternating possessions starting on the 25-yard line.
