From a pure analytics, it would likely say score the points and stop them on D which is what we did.

Absolutely. But when your kicker is 1/4, I don’t even trust him to make a 20 yarder. Just score and I’ll take my chances. But yeah the smart play is to take a knee, put it in the middle of the field, and win 6-3.

You see it all the time. Fair question. If Fitzgerald doesn’t intercept it in the endzone to seal the game, the question makes a lot more sense. But he did and we won it.

I like getting the TD, getting all the momentum, and sending the Defense back out there to cook. But the D almost SMU’d that ****…

Now that we won…can we just rewind to that TD. TAMU were out of TOs, should someone have told MT that if he gets the first yard to just go down in bounds around the 1? Three kneel downs and a chip shot FG.

For the record, I think what he did was fine, D was dominating and no one thought they’d be able to go 75 yds in about 1:40 to score. Just asking the question.

The ending was close either way.

But we won. We celebrate. A&M goes home.

I think he goes down at the 1 and allows us to kill at least 40 more seconds and we can then have 3 chances to punch it in before having to even attempt a field goal.
1st and goal at the 1 with 1:44 to go and no timeouts for A&M and we had at least 2 timeouts.
Get the clock down to 1min.
Kneel it to get it down to 20s.
Run it once to get it down to 15s
Run it again to get it down to 10s.
Kick a FG if we haven't punched it in yet.

Even if you punch it in on the first play you took a full extra minute off the clock from them.

Insanity. It's like people have never watched football before.

In a game with an oblong ball, lots of crazy **** happens. Bad snaps. Fumbles. Penalties. Missed FGs on a Biblical level.

Nothing is ever certain, except getting the points for scoring an easy touchdown. If we were ALREADY AHEAD, then maybe we can have this discussion. But with a tie game and a half-dozen drives (by both teams) ending poorly?

Yeeeeeahhhhh....let's run some time off the clock instead of scoring to break the tie.

Personally I would’ve scored, went for two, got it, kicked the onside, scored again, went for two again.. etc

Any other day, drop at the 1, run down the clock, and kick the freebie field goal for the win. But as desperate as we were for a touchdown after leaving so many points on the field, take it and let your defense seal it.

Correct... the defense playing lights out. Their qb barely got the ball out in couple of those 1st down throws plus that roughing the passer penalty... else we wouldn't have had all this drama.
All for the good... the young secondary and LBs grew up on that last drive. That drive probably built more belief in themselves going forward than an easy 3 and out would have...

From a math perspective, absolutely yes. You kneel at the one and let the clock run while trying to score the TD after you let the play cloxk tick to one.

I've seen a lot of comments as if you leave it to the kicker. That's not really what you do there optimally. You let another minute + run off the clock and still score a TD.

That said, there's the math world that tells you the optimal path and then there's the real world. In the real world, the conditions were awful for kicking. He didn't call me and tell me, but it sure appeared like Davis was shaken mentally as well. This is a kid that was something like 2-7 kicking FG's at FAU and he seemed to morph back into that guy in this game.

With those details and the way the defense was playing, I can see why you just take the TD while you have the chance.

The win expectancy with kneeling at the one and kicking was 99.0%. I think the above factors make that more like 97% (three times typical miss elevation). Toney scoring it was around 95.6%. Not completely insignificant difference but I'm happy with what he did.

The end of the game - showed you why you go down at the one, and take your chance with a extra point kick . That team was 3rd and goal on the 4. Missed extra points happen way less frequently than miracle interceptions in end zone. We were 4 yards away from overtime and potential loss

in that moment, at the game, i was definitely thinking going down before the TD was the better play

thats ALOT to ask of someone in that moment, but its probably the right thing to do. as others have pointed out, you dont necessarily play for the FG & ideally you score the TD on the third down play.


in hindsight, with a&m at the goaline about to score.. every cane fan was wishing they had less time left. then the int happens and toney scoring was obviously a no brainer.


but ask yourself this. if toney had gone down early. and it gets to 2nd down, under a minute left and we’re lined up to run it in.. do you think a&m coaches are tellling their defense to stop us or let us score on purpose?

Carter Davis to come in and kick that extra point had to be stressful and he smashed it through

so he may have made the FG from the same spot

or maybe not

let's all thank him for that because can you imagine if Davis missed the extra point and Reed throws a TD and we lose by one point

after three missed FG and a missed Extra point

although that is how Aggies beat Notre Dame on a missed extra point!

No, F no. This is big brained football takes that ignore basic common sense. TAKE THE TD. The worst thing that can happen is that you end up giving up a TD and going to OT. There is absolutely no guarantee Miami makes a game winning FG, especially knowing how mentally jacked Davis was after his last miss. Dude was struggling, wind was killing him. TAKE THE TD.

the worst thing POSSIBLE was AM drives the field and scores a TD (they were on the 6 yard line with 34 seconds)

THEN they LITERALLY could have gone for two to win the game right then instead of going to overtime
