Today's "Elite" HC Market

fair market value - you get what you pay for and to date he has delivered

That's the thing. Miami fans in particular expect perfection...anything else is failure. Not saying that's wrong, but when that's the expectation, there are only 2 coaches who can approach it right now. The truth is that Riley has delivered, just not the ultimate prize. But as fans we're no longer able to enjoy any other prizes, so we see anything but a NC as failure.

In a (slightly) related note, I've been seeing people posting about what Richt did at Miami and mocking fans for giving him the boot. Richt had to go, not because he went 7-6, but because he didn't think that record called for a change. He couldn't believe that things wouldn't just iron themselves out without his help, and that's unacceptable from the guy at the top.

Lovie Smith! BAWHAHAHAHAHHAHHA!!!!!!!!!! Oh wait, Ill is run by the same folks who run Chicago.......................epic failures across the board.

Ha, I am looking forward to the days where we even get a chance to potentially get spanked in the College Football Playoffs. Our future is brighter now with CMR gone, but we have a lot of work to do to even get to the level of those guys.

Believe it or not, our problem is we are in the ACC. The conference sucks and we should be in the title game every year but we need to beat one of the two real teams to get there. We could get pass any of the other playoff teams, except the other real one, Bama, easy enough. Even OSU is doable and OU we could easily get better than. We know we can crush ND and the PAC teams can all be beat. If we get to the playoffs by beating Clemson, Bama is the only team to stop us. Now that is one huge IF. 2017 showed how sudden we can contend but 2018 showed how far away we are. Lets hope Manny catches a wave like 2017 and doesn't ***** it up like Mark did. The recruiting class after a playoff appearance by Miami will be untouchable.

Lincoln Riley may very well be worth it ... or not.

He’s had a meteoric rise in his coaching career and he’s young and 12-2 in both his seasons as head coach. That’s really great to have that going for you so early in your head coaching career at 35 years of age. He’s also 0-2 in the bowls/playoffs.

If you trade stocks you’ll understand what I mean when I say he has a huge P/E. That ridiculous salary will be justified if he continues to win like he is now, and every once in a while actually wins a playoff game.

But honestly we’re not going to know for a few years. Who knows? It’s so early in his career he hasn’t been challenged yet. He may end up being a 9-4 or 10-3 type coach long term. There is no guarantee he continues at this level, or that he even has the stamina to do It.

It will either be a really good investment for Oklahoma, or they’re overpaying for an average coach. Only time will tell if this was a good move or not.

JJ was 0-3 in Bowl games at Miami, but that was just him still learning. Riley's problem is structural. He is all offense and no defense. Unless he fundamentally changes to have more defense, a balanced team with that can score too we beat him. JJ just had to learn how to coach a bowl game, his team was a beast on both sides on the ball and ST too. That said, any serious school would pay 7 or 8 million to coach who made playoffs two out of two.

WE CAN'T BEAT UVA MORE THAN 50% OF THE TIME.

It's either that, or wait for the NFL to poach him while you look for another coach to come and struggle to live up to what he did. Contract is huge but it was probably necessary. Dont forget that Clemson put up 6 points on Bama last year.

Really? How often do NFL teams poach college coaches?

They're paying for stability. It's a good move.

Every college program knows the days of letting guys go to the NFL because of money are over. These schools make enough to keep the coach that runs the program, and it's a sound investment.

It beats coaching searches and paying buyout money for unknowns.

And it's why I chuckle at the posters on here thinking it's still 1999, and we just need to find a coach with NFL aspirations.

No. We need to find the coach who can achieve so much success that we'll pay whatever we need to keep him. We have enough recent history to know how costly and unproductive multiple coaching searches can be.

Kliff Kingsbury just got hired to be a head coach when he was about to be an OC for a falling USC program. Meanwhile, Riley is the one that just mentored 2 transfer QBs to a Heisman worthy season, in an era where a solid QB mentor and/or coach is a premium in the NFL. It isn't a stretch to say that NFL teams have an eye on him.

Is this a joke? Lincoln Riley deserves to be the #3 highest paid coach in America, no doubt. Besides Clemson and Alabama no other program has been as successful as Lincoln Riley since he has been a head coach.

You don't have to win the NC to get paid big, if that were the case only Saban and Dabo would be getting paid big.

You know how much money the University receives when their teams makes the Conference Championship, when it makes it to the Playoffs, and when if makes it to the National Championship game? The exposure, TV money, and so much more that you can't even put in terms of dollar figures that occurs as you get farther is absurd and well worth 6 million dollars without you having to ever win it or even reach the final game.

And the distortions continue. One day the math will self correct.

Wouldn't you like to be paid that much for getting destroyed on nat'l TV by a coach more than double your age?

I'm not saying Riley is a bad coach, but at almost $7MM/yr (incl incentives), the expectation is to win every game.

Forever.
I'd kill to have a coach like Lincoln Riley at Miami.

He’s worth it if it’s all him.

It’s not like he took over a shltty team. Again, in my opinion, the jury is still out. I’m not saying he’s overpaid, I’m not sure if he’s worth 7 million, but like I said I think what Oklahoma’s doing is betting on his future, but it’s not without risk.

He went 24-2 with mostly another coaches players. There’s a difference between being an assistant coach and a head coach. And part of that is lasting power. If he doesn’t have it, we will know in two or three years.

He could very well be the next great coach. That’s a real possibility. But it’s not a given.

Miami fans 'expecting' perfection are beyond unrealistic, you do not go from 7-6 to perfection, regardless of how much talent you think your 7-6 team had, "You are what your record says you are"

We used to beat OU regularly til the Four Stooges showed up.
