To the tape watchers, regarding OL?

SJ can barely hold up vs Stanford. He needs to be at center and blocking full back and that’s it. He doesn’t have the size (pause) to play vs the good teams at guard.

I’d rather get my lumps out of the way with Cantwell now, early in the season, at RT.

Cantwell seemed much more natural at Tackle in the spring too

I found it easy to remember it was his first start considering all the missed assignments and air blocks he had. I’m not writing him off forever, but I don’t want to see him out there again until he at least know what the F he is supposed to each play.

I was also at the game. Were you having Sebastian sign things at the end of the game? In particular, an orange Canes flag?

Let’s see how McCoy does against real speed and bend. Wake has a guy. If I’m them, I place him over McCoy at times. Let’s see how that works out, bc then Clemson also has a guy.

By far the least and he was definitely the best in run blocking. Think of it like this, he had less PT than SJ last year and yet was miles better. He will be fine. Need another G to step up and Ryan to play more consistently

Wf have 2 solid DEs so should be good reps for both tackles
 
This will probably get negged away. But that’s fine. Our running game concepts are never going to change and it makes the job of our offensive line and running backs harder than other schemes. Everyone adapts. The game is constantly evolving. Teams are running chaos at the line of scrimmage. Stunts. Twists. Crashing down. Our tendencies are tried and true. We are trying to double team block and there’s just a concoction of bodies at the point of attack. We either have to adapt or we are going to be tossing the pill against any team with a pulse (which is fine with Mensah). But there are a ton of teams who are making life easier on themselves running the football. We are not. And this is beating a dead horse and not complete sunshine pumping so it won’t be well received. I don’t care if it’s Mario’s philosophy or Dawson’s but our rushing attack is never going to be cutting edge or give a Defense much to worry about. I appreciate Dawson’s passing concepts, I do. But we are selling ourselves short with treating running plays as throw away plays. It is what it is. And makes life difficult for the o line and backs. A perfect running back in our system is one with elite vision and can get narrow in a hurry.

So did Mauigoa in his first game, and he is one of the best linemen to ever suit up in a Canes uniform:

  • Overall Grade: 51.4
  • Pass-Blocking Grade: 27.2 (allowing 4 quarterback pressures and 1 sack over 61 offensive snaps)
  • Run-Blocking Grade: 62

In general, I feel pretty good about where the line is at the moment. These kids just need to gel and get comfortable, which will come with more game reps. They have the two best teachers in the country, so I have no doubt this group will be rocking and rolling in November

I know Mauigoa had struggles his freshmen year and that’s why I tried to tell people during fall camp about all the hype they was giving cantwell and congden. Francis was ahead of where those guys are and he still had some struggles

I'm pretty happy about a conservative 4 yards and a cloud of dust running game when we also have Mensiah and Baby Jesus. Need to bench SJ and get Ryan, Max, and Jackson playing more consistently.

They aren’t treating run plays as throw away plays. Duo isn’t necessarily designed for big runs but rather to get consistent yards when the blocking is effective. You mentioned stunts and twist by linemen but even in duo the linemen have to have awareness to know when to pick guys up and not double team. It’s basically power run game and that’s what Mario wants. I agree it nee to be more variety like when Pringle was getting reps late in the year and the run in the championship game vs Indiana that was a outside run

Yeah that’s where I’m at. I just want to get those yards if this is the scheme. Don’t want it to get to a point where a run play is a waste of a down

I hate to applaud anything gator related. But I feel like we could utilize some Buster Faulkner concepts or even Brohm in our own conference. To create more space in the running game. But I’m fully aware that it’s not madden. And we do what we do.

I just checked with Ole Miss and OSU and they have a different take.
 
A general obeservation about O-Line play. I hate starting a season when we're still playing musical chairs with OL. OLs generally are better at one or the other; Pass Blocking or Run Blocking. Very few do both equally well at a high level.

Because of our offenseive schemes for the past four years or so, and high value/investments in QBs, the focus has been on Pass Blocking. But until they get the guys settled in postions and used to playing with each other across the line, both will suffer - the run game particulalry may have to look like it did Friday night, good backs making guys miss and YAC.

Yeah it’s not an explosive process. I just want us to be the best. But it’s a touchy subject. We’ve been blessed with an Oline and QBs that are pretty darn good at the college level. We gotta rely on the pass game. Air that ***** out

We didn’t run incredibly against OSU. But this is what I’m talking about. You can’t have a nuanced convo. Our running game objectively has tons of room for improvement and would effectively raise our ceiling. I’m not saying we are pitiful or should start from scratch.

Stanford thought their best chance of winning was to completely take away our run game and force us to prove we could pass protect, hoping to rattle Mensah early. Instead, our pass protection held up extremely well, Toney broke a school record, and our WRs were open all day.

Stanford respected our run game enough to sell out against it, which is why the rushing stats may not look great on paper. But if a team wants to defend us that way, I’ll take those offensive numbers every single week. Mensah and Toney will cruise to New York

Moving forward, I’d expect teams to play more zone, and that’s perfectly fine. This running game is going to have a field day against anyone who doesn’t dedicate extra resources to stopping it.

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to be the team tasked with figuring out how to stop this offense lol.
