To the tape watchers, regarding OL?

Should be much easier to run the ball if teams don’t dedicate all their resources to stopping it like Stanford did

I’m hoping so. Just think our run tendencies also make it easier for opposing defenses to crash down. But I bring this up every year tbh. I’m not an offensive coordinator. I’d like to give them more to think about when they crash down with reckless abandon. We will take it game by game.

Yeah it’s not an explosive process. I just want us to be the best. But it’s a touchy subject. We’ve been blessed with an Oline and QBs that are pretty darn good at the college level. We gotta rely on the pass game. Air that ***** out

As the season goes on I think the passing game will open up more for the run game than last year passing game. In 2024 with ward they were 28th in explosive runs and was 6th in ypc. Last year they were 72nd in ypc

Who said it didn't need improvement? Obviously, we do. We have a better base than you credit.

Btw, we rushed for 150 over OSU. They had 45.
 
He's had these players all spring and summer and now 1 game. Enough with the ******* experimenting. Play your best 5 and let them gel as much as possible.

I’ll take the offensive numbers we had in game 1 any day of the week. Mensah and Toney will cruise to New York, and we will win a lot of football games.

Sure, our running game didn't look great, but it created an opportunity for Toney to break a school record. We had over 500 yards of total offense in essentially 3 quarters of Football, which is all I care about

4.1 yard per carry. Was nothing earth shattering but respectable. And I don’t really care what the opponent ran for. I’m glad they got suffocated. But yes, just think improvement is all any of us are looking for. It’s a polarizing topic the last few years. But we are consistent to our approach. We also don’t incorporate running backs into the screen game. Just think there are areas to be opened up at times. But again, I’m aware it’s not a video game. We stick to our principles.

For sure. Just looking toward future opponents. If any defense tries to do what Stanford did, they should be fired. lol I’m not sure it’s possible to glue Toney one on one.

Because of our offenseive schemes for the past four years or so, and high value/investments in QBs, the focus has been on Pass Blocking. But until they get the guys settled in postions and used to playing with each other across the line, both will suffer - the run game particulalry may have to look like it did Friday night, good backs making guys miss and YAC.

How do you find the right 5 without playing some musical chairs, especially in light that the guards (Max, SJ, Cantwell and Congdon) have little to no reps on film? I agree with what you're saying overall, but we had a need for three new guys to start on the OL this fall. Ryan Rod has been here a long time, the others not so much. Sure there are scrimmages and practice film, but it's not the same. One positive that came from this last game is we learned that SJ ain't it. He can go to second team until he knows his assignments.
 
Pass pro was good running I’ll take with a grain of salt. As some had already said with the tape we just put out I don’t think many teams will stack the box on us play after play. But it was the first game for a lot of new faces with actual game speed and we scored a lot. Running will open up once we go pistol more like in the playoffs. If we are having this same discussion going into ND then I will be concerned.

Yeah, and a third of that yardage was the last drive. It was great because we gashed them when it counted most but yeah, it was tough sledding against Taint across the board.

Yeah that’s all I’m really saying. We don’t scheme up yardage or explosives in the run game. But it is what it is. And no, nobody is going to gash them like that, I’m well aware. But we should be shredding half our schedule annually on the ground as well as the air.

Yes. He only played in the 4th quarter. If we can get him and Cantwell going by the playoffs it's on. He can't be worse than SJ
 
After watching @Lance Roffers discuss the good and bad versus Stanford on the podcast… I think we might need to put McCoy back at LG next to Samson at LT. Then figure out our starting RG and RT.

Maybe even move Samson and McCoy both back to Guard and figure out the LT and RT. Bc our offensive pass and run game relies heavily on above average guard play but right now the guard play / talent available looks as suspect as it’s ever been under Mario Cristobal.

Tommy Kinsler transferring is looking like a major loss… I don’t know why he left but we should’ve increased his NIL to keep him if that was the issue.

SJ is a center I think and I liked what I saw from Max. Need Cantwell, contain and Hawks gotta lock that last G spot down
