Good to have you posting again. Agree with your takes. Best combo was buch at LG and cantwell at RG. I love SJ out on bubble screens downfield. Buchanan is a better run blocker but he has a ways to go with pass blocking

People are dragging SJ, but that man started for a reason. He fits the scheme they want to run this year. He just needs reps. He was flying downfield on that Barkate screen pass and just barely missed the block. If he makes the block, Barkate is gone to the house.

I’m willing to let that man grow and see what he looks like after 6-7 games and then go from there. If he’s still whiffing on downfield blocks late October, that’s one thing. But to just toss him aside over one poor performance? Nah. This next game should be a chance for him to get his confidence up and showcase what he can really do.

I will also say this.. homie would be a nasty good fullback. Fletcher or Brown running behind him at the goaline? Unstoppable.
 
Watched every single pass play multiple times. I think we’re in better shape there than most have led on.

SJ was better there than I expected, which matches my live game watch perspective. He has pretty good feet and anchors well. Definitely had some rough reps in the run game, but if he’s just a rotational guard, I think we’re in ok shape.

I thought Cantwell was off balance more than I hoped, but I guess that’s to be expected.

Buchanan is my guy and had some positive moments, but gets over his skis in pass pro, too.

McCoy was better at Tackle, sans a very bad rep, than I expected, but Stanford did not have anyone to really test him. Wake will.

Samson was pretty much awesome. He sets amazingly quick; just like what he showed inside at Guard during playoffs.

I’m more optimistic than I was before doing the deep dive. We’ll see. Stanford lacks guys with excellent lateral quickness, so let’s discount that part.

Unfortunately Cantwell will be looked at under a different lens as an 18 year old because he is getting paid millions as an 18 year old and he was #1 recruit in the country. More will be expected from him it is what it is

i'm a lot less worried about pass pro than i am about run blocking. the good news is in 2.5 quarters we put a whole lot of tape out there on why opponents should give us favorable numbers in the run game lol, so hopefully that will help even if the blocking isn't amazing.
 
Just switch up the personnel and actually put some dudes with size and experience in.

Starting lineup should be a mix of

Samson, Meriweather, RR, McCoy,
Cantwell
 
Very concerned with Cantwell’s footwork and bend. Like the kid but by no means did he look anything close to the best offensive line prospect we’ve ever recruited.

Lack of bend which impacts his leverage and lots of false steps on the snap. Good thing is those are correctable in the weight room and good coaching. My concern is how long that takes to get fixed

The transition from high school to college for offensive linemen is the biggest jump he’ll have in his career, especially with the competition he faced.

Thats why i was saying in the off season francis was more ready because of him playing at img his senior year, he had to face bain and other elite players in games and practice

Mass kicks ***, it’s time for Cantwell to take over that guard spot from SJ. And I think that’s exactly what we’re gonna see.. Buchanan played a good game, so I’m not worried about the other guard spot but SJ just isn’t it at the other and he needs to focus on getting his snapping down if he wants a chance at starting on this offensive line in the future. And I’ll say, if Cantwell can’t do it, then get Congden in there. Again, mass kicks *** and that’s what this offensive line needs on the interior.

Yea, you saw the same thing I did. Stanford with a 7/8 man box contributed to the lack luster rushing...

We are all so busy complaining that we aren’t giving enough love to Samson. Watching him against Stanford was like watching McKinnie in that you almost forget Stanford had someone trying to get to Mensah on that side. The eyes look right past Samson because there is nothing to see.

McCoy looks more comfortable (albeit one game) at Tackle than at Guard when he was over powered at times. Going against D-ends instead of D-tackles may be the right matchup for him.
