Tidbits from workouts

Great thread and thanks for the positive info, DMoney. Glad to hear about off-season progress.

We are assembling a very talented roster of savages who understand the Cane mentality. Been a bad mix of subpar, lackadaisical players over the past decade. 2018 class will get us to that next step, and add in 2019 and we will be set to compete against anyone, anywhere.

Exciting times!

- Derrick Smith is blossoming into a freak. 6'2, 215 with plenty of room to grow. He has people excited.

- Gilbert Frierson is impressing with his physical tools and personality. He is an alpha with a Cane attitude, similar to Michael Pinckney.

- Some of the freshmen like Delone Scaife are pushing through the freshman wall. It is great to have those guys in early to go through adversity in workouts.

- Gerald Willis is focused. He's actually getting on other players to go to class.

- Michael Jackson is another guy with his eyes on the prize. Last season gave him a lot of confidence and he has a baby girl to look after. Hope he stays healthy because it could be a big year.

- Jonathan Garvin is a monster. He keeps getting bigger and more impressive. He is one of the standout physical specimens on the team. Expect him and Joe Jackson to form one of the best pass-rushing duos in the nation.

Boom!!! #6 we coming for you!!! I'm surprised at some other names that's not on here, but I would imagine this list could include most on the team.

our special teams should be crazy fast and beastly, Miami football is back. Add the AH4 to the mix WOW!!!!

Where does Derrick Smith fit into the plan next year? Will he be used at CB again due to depth issues? Or doss he have a chance to start opposite Jaquan?

he was our backup nickel.
im sure he will keep that job.

he will definnitely be ahead of Knowles/Finley in the Safety depth chart too. Amari Carter may have locked down Redwines backup job from the end of last year though. And hall is a beast and coming to be jaquans backup. Either way those 3 young safetys are good. Finley and Knowles are trash.

I wish our fans would not trash our players like that. maybe they can play special teams and help or help with the scout teams as veterans of the program. We have better players coming so, let be grateful of that.

nah **** that knowles LITERALLY almost singlehandedly lost us the ******* fsu game.

and he was way better than finley who also LITERALLY got less snaps than anyone on our defense that wasn't redshirting.

Im fine with them being a member of the team this upcoming season, but they should be gone by next season.

Thanks for this... So could Derrick Smith end up being for us what Roquan Smith was for UGA this past year? Geez there are so many hybrids on this D, does that kinda work against learning the intricacies of each position?

Also, how's Gurvan Hall looking in workouts? Really excited to watch the kid lay people out, man

DMoney do you think JJ and Garvin will start on opposite sides in ‘18?

Probably on 3rd down djack slides to tackle with Willis and have Garvin and Jackson off the edge

man i think everyone is trippin if they seriously believe garvin and joe jackson aren't going to be lining up opposite of eachother. as if joe jackson can't possibly play SDE. dude was ****ing 6'5" 250lbs as a true sophomore. you don't think he's gunna put on another 10lbs? Come on. We're putting our 2 most talented DEs on the field as much as possible. Garvin and Joe are going to get hella pt together including on non passing downs.

2017 snaps (1986 total):
Joe Jackson - 580
Chad Thomas - 550
Trent Harris - 455
DJax - 213
Garvin - 165
DJ Johnson - 23

We are losing 1028 snaps, or 51% of all our snaps.
Next year it will look something like:
Joe Jackson - 650
Jon Garvin - 500
DJax - 500
Scott Patchan - 150
Rousseau - 150

We will absolutely see them on the field together - i just don't think it should be overdone unless it's passing situations or against pass-dominate spread teams.

To me, there is no reason to beat up your 2 best pass rushing WDEs on early downs when you can rotate them and keep fresh for the entire game/season. Let DJax play a lot at SDE. Let Bethel rotate some reps out there unless he no longer has the agility with the increased weight. Let Willis kick out there on early downs against run dominate teams and then inside on pass downs.....or Chatman if we land him. Once we land some of these stud recruits, we should have so much flexibility we shouldn't have to wear anyone down or play them out of position.

Thanks D$....man it sure is nice to talk about whose lining up with who 2 or 3 deep instead of getting past the starters worrying about whose going to create decent depth.

The staff is starting to put the numbers back where they belong and they are doing it with ALL studs..

Can’t we ever just keep positive posts and good news that way? Some guys always having to show that their smartest guy in the room. Just for a few days guys. If your really a Canes fan is it too much to ask?

Let's see your college resume to anyone who refers to any member of this team as trash. You know a m'fer is a weak *** fool who says stuff like that since if you called a teammate of our studs trash, you'd get knocked the **** out. Let us know what sweat equity you have in this team to label anyone such.

Edit: Before any of you ladies get your panties in a bunch, there's ways you can talk about players without disrespecting them. Even the worst players on any team I played on through college got my respect more so than any loudmouthed fan, spectator, or opposing player. I didn't even have to really like the dude to have his back.

Amari might take Redwines position... I know the staff wants him on the field like Bandy... 4-2-5 was our best defense with Mccloud on the bench

This is the key. Frankly, I am shocked to hear it.

Knowles is one of our better special teams guys. I like him in that role and occasionally coming in to give a guy a breather or if we have a blow out. I dont know about Finley

ive been one of the more positive guys on this board dip****.

but theres guys on this roster that are not miami caliber and they need to go. Sorry if you don't like to hear that, but its the truth. Sorry, but not all depth is good depth if they can't help us or fill in when guys get injured or be major contributors on special teams. We don't got room for that no more.

seems like fat al and doritos shadow is still cast over you.

knowles was miles ahead of finley. he was still bad though.

but we are at the point that we NEED attrition in order to sign a full 25 man class in 2019...unless you want us to pass up on studs because we have non miami caliber guys we should be nice to and keep on scholarship.
As of today we will have 19 open spots for the 2019 class if no FR-SO-JR's leave. fact of the matter is we need 6 guys to leave via attrition or the draft. being realistic we could probably say we need at least 3 guys to transfer out. Just so happens Robert Knowles, George Brown, and Bar Milo will all be elligible for Grad Transfer, and Finley should leave regardless.
