Tidbits from workouts

- Derrick Smith is blossoming into a freak. 6'2, 215 with plenty of room to grow. He has people excited.

- Gilbert Frierson is impressing with his physical tools and personality. He is an alpha with a Cane attitude, similar to Michael Pinckney.

- Some of the freshmen like Delone Scaife are pushing through the freshman wall. It is great to have those guys in early to go through adversity in workouts.

- Gerald Willis is focused. He's actually getting on other players to go to class.

- Michael Jackson is another guy with his eyes on the prize. Last season gave him a lot of confidence and he has a baby girl to look after. Hope he stays healthy because it could be a big year.

- Jonathan Garvin is a monster. He keeps getting bigger and more impressive. He is one of the standout physical specimens on the team. Expect him and Joe Jackson to form one of the best pass-rushing duos in the nation.

Thank you for the information!

Where does Derrick Smith fit into the plan next year? Will he be used at CB again due to depth issues? Or doss he have a chance to start opposite Jaquan?

he was our backup nickel.
im sure he will keep that job.

he will definnitely be ahead of Knowles/Finley in the Safety depth chart too. Amari Carter may have locked down Redwines backup job from the end of last year though. And hall is a beast and coming to be jaquans backup. Either way those 3 young safetys are good. Finley and Knowles are trash.

Thanks DMoney, great stuff! I think Garvin gets a lot more snaps this year. And Frierson looks like a hitting machine, whether as a lockdown press corner or as a safety, alpha with a Cane attitude **** yeah!

DMoney do you think JJ and Garvin will start on opposite sides in ‘18?

Probably on 3rd down djack slides to tackle with Willis and have Garvin and Jackson off the edge

man i think everyone is trippin if they seriously believe garvin and joe jackson aren't going to be lining up opposite of eachother. as if joe jackson can't possibly play SDE. dude was ******* 6'5" 250lbs as a true sophomore. you don't think he's gunna put on another 10lbs? Come on. We're putting our 2 most talented DEs on the field as much as possible. Garvin and Joe are going to get hella pt together including on non passing downs.

2017 snaps (1986 total):
Joe Jackson - 580
Chad Thomas - 550
Trent Harris - 455
DJax - 213
Garvin - 165
DJ Johnson - 23

We are losing 1028 snaps, or 51% of all our snaps.
Next year it will look something like:
Joe Jackson - 650
Jon Garvin - 500
DJax - 500
Scott Patchan - 150
Rousseau - 150

If personnel situation allows move smith to lb if he can handle it. Could be a dynamic player at that position.

These are the kind of posts that are missed here on the forum.

Michael Jackson is a first round corner, IMO. Size, athleticism, ball skills, cover skills. The fact he came back with a daughter to care for says a lot about him as a man. Loved the use of EYE ON THE PRIZE for him. Good stuff.

Love Gil. IMO, he fits in right behind Jackson on that side. Should be his primary backup this year on the boundary. Would be a nice safety, sure. But can't beat that size and athleticism on the outside.

So...we've had Derrick Smith seemingly all over...safety, a little linebacker, and even lining up in the nickel. What is he ultimately developing into? A Telvin Smith type of linebacker? Can definitely see that as his future.

Smith has exceptional ball skills, physicality, and ability to roam the field. I'd like to see him play rover.

From what I noticed Chad and Trent played LDE while Jackson, Djax, Garvin played RDE.

Someone will need to make the switch to LDE. Here is what I'm proposing:

RDE Garvin / Djax / Rousseau

WDT Willis / Odenigbo / Martin

SDT Ford / Silvera / Miller

LDE Jackson / Bethel / Patchan

Gilbert Frierson and Derrick Smith as our future starting safeties would be nasty.... Gurvan Hall would have something to say about that too.

smh **** our secondary went from JAG level depth to fckn stacked like pringles :rickflair2:

lol @ moving Amari Carter to linebacker...

Don’t think he has the speed we need back there, with his physical nature though that safety/lb position he is primed for

What's wrong with the idea?... I think Carter could play strong safety but I think his range is limited compared to Smith. He would make a perfect weakside lber imo.

His range is defitniely more limited than smith who is one of the better athletes on the team. At 6’2 215 smith is very fluid for his size and has good ball skills

CMR and staff have worked their azzes off building secondary depth and some want to move our bigger, stronger and faster Safeties to LB with no positions performance liabilities at all to base their opinions off. Just that "he has the size" to play LB. Plus we are setting ourselves up for a stellar LB class for 2019. Lets let the staff continue building depth with size at all secondary positions before we move safeties to LB.
