Thoughts From the Bench Press: A&M

Not sure this is the argument we really want to make - seems like more of a push if anything...

Former McNeese assistant Guidry charged with second-offense DWI
BATON ROUGE (AP) — Baton Rouge police say Western Kentucky defensive coordinator Lance Guidry — a former football coach at McNeese State — was arrested early Saturday on a drunken driving charge.
JFC, this better be parody. Who hasn’t drunk driven after a college game. Who hasn’t gotten a DUI?…. Oh wait, .. never mind.

Hate to ruin this thread about workout supplements and weight lifting with football, but personally I think the X Factor in this game will be one of our WR’s either stepping up or not.

Last year we moved the ball on them pretty well between the 20’s but we couldn’t get it done in the red zone, and we had few explosive plays. Both in my opinion can be traced to a lack of a #1 option at WR that makes A&M DB’s sweat.

We have a guy step up and force them to acknowledge him, and everything else on offense falls into place.

The rhythm sucked last season and the timing was off in the passing game; there was no offensive identity whatsoever.

It should be a throwaway season; not because it looked so bad, but it took the perfect storm of negative circumstances to produce such a poor product on the football field. There was no #1 option, the line was decimated by injuries and the scheme didn't fit body-types or skillsets. You name it and i'm sure it happened in the cluster-**** that was last season.

Both teams are completely different this year and we can't hang our hat on too much of anything that occurred last season, other than the fact that despite our challenges and self-inflicted wounds we competed and weren't completely outclassed.

Somehow we - physically - looked like we belonged on the same field as TAMU last year… before we got rag dolled by MTSU.

Alright Canes, I’m sitting here stacking plates the way you guys do bussing tables at your local Dennys, having snorted enough preworkout to make Charlie Sheen go: “hey pal, slow down” and I’ve got some thoughts about tomorrows big game against the biggest frauds in the SEC.

First things first, I’m not the guy that gets wrapped up in “must wins” or getting overly emotional about one game, especially not one against an out of conference opponent in Week 2.

IDGAF about FSU beating LSU. What they say on Twitter ain’t even on my radar. I dont feel like because they won, we need to somehow “respond”. That’s tired short term thinking.

However…we need to beat the living **** out of these bums.

Not because FSU, but because of us. Our fans, our boosters, our supporters that matter, they’re on shaky ground. The goodwill Mario came in with last year took a major blow, and we need to finally prove we can win these types of games that we quite frankly have **** all over ourselves in for years.

So why do I think we finally get it done?

Lance Guidry: the last big Miami game we won was against Notre Dame. Guidry says “hold my beer” (literally) as just last year he dominated Notre Dame with a bunch of kids noone wanted. There’s something to coaching in big games. It’s true he doesn’t have a ton of experience in them, but this dude is built for this. Our defense actually looked prepared, aggressive, AND disciplined for probably the first time in 20 years. Much is being made about his matchup with Petrino but ask yourself which of these guys ended up in a neck brace after too much partying, and which guy didn’t. There’s your answer.

Henry Parrish: The backbone of our woeffense last year he somehow managed to rip off almost 5 yards per carry. He seriously should have received Heisman votes. So we got him a legit OL and what did he do? Averaged 10ypc. We’ve got a stable of good backs but when this game gets tight, this is the kid that’s going to take us over the finish line.

Kam: I noticed last week that Gabbert avoided quite a few interceptions by just eating the all or throwing it away. Guidry threw some looks that will be INTs against much of our schedule. A&M thinks they have the advantage with their WRs and they’re gonna force the issue and see if we can stop it. Kam will have an INT in this game.

Francisco Mauigoa: two generals on defense. The way you beat a talented offense is by not beating yourself first. Between him and Kam this is the most leadership we’ve had on defense since our glory days. We know busts can happen especially in big games, but this dude is a man. He’s another coach on the field and when things get tight, people can lean on him.

Matt Lee and Javion Cohen: I’m putting them together because they are serving the same purpose. A&Ms DL should be solid, and the outside is going to be a battle, but TVD (and any QB really) has always struggled with pressure up the middle. The interior of this line has the potential to be the best we’ve seen in decades perhaps. In the same vein as Mauigoa and Kam, having two smart, talented veterans along the line making sure everyone knows what they’re supposed to do, is gonna carry us against a younger Uber talented DL. I expect us to run right at them, but not a ground and pound. I expect unique formations, misdirections, keeping their DL on their heels rather than letting them pin their ears back.

The biggest lingering question remaining is what do we see from Shannon Dawson and TVD. It’s been almost 22 months since TVD lit up Duke and had people talking Heisman. These guys will determine whether we win by 3 or 16.

Verdict: Miami gets it done in the Red Zone and stiffens up when A&M threatens

Good guys 24
A&M 16

U keep my post numbers down because I’ve found that we think a lot alike. This is literally my list of impact players. Glad you included Javion Cohen with Matt Lee.

I’d just add TE Arroyo and Ray Ray Armstrong as surprise impact players of this game. These two players are always open despite the small sample size. If and when they become TVD’s first or second read choices on certain plays, watch out. Right now TVD favors and trusts Colbie and Restrepo first and with good reason.

Couldn’t agree more especially about the TE position. TVD went to Mallory a lot the last few years and one big question I’ve had is what exactly is going on with that position? Arroyo is so talented but it’s like we just haven’t seen him get to show it yet (injuries, Gattis etc) and Riley Williams looks like he can make an impact sooner than later. Really really looking forward to that position making an impact in this game.

Ray Ray brings an element to the offense that we’ve lacked for a bit and that’s a kid that’s a touchdown waiting to happen.

Well said.

If Arroyo isn't able to go today, I think a healthy dose of Riley Williams in the pass game is what we'll see. His a mismatch vs their LBs/DBs.

Also, when do we see a PA to McCormick? Lol when he's in the game, other teams know he's there to block. Let him slip out on a delay route when the defense is ignoring him lol

We had some talks about this over the summer I think

Cam is solid but if we stick him in there does it make it too obvious we are running the ball? Which hey ask Kyle Shanahan or people like that. It doesn’t matter if they know it’s coming they might not be able to stop it

I think we are all in the same boat here where there’s optimism about Dawson but we really didn’t get to see much last week so still lots of questions

Ask Dan Quinn if knowing what's coming helps is defense vs the 49ers and he'll tell you "**** no" lmao
If they can't stop it, run it til they do. And I'm confident in Dawson that a lot, if not most of his loooks, have alternate wrinkles. So it may look like The same formation but it won't be the same play.

Also, Cam is 25 years old? He's a grown man next to 2 big boy OTs on either side. **** these ******* and run it through their motha****in faces

It’s something I mentioned in the first post but something we’ve hit on for a bit but you can run it and be creative. Harbaugh is kinda the same way or at least that was his philosophy in the NFL. I don’t think Dawson wants to just line up and blow people off the ball, and it might be the perfect way to attack a young aggressive DL like A&M.

5 more hours till we find out

Shame on me for trying to keep up with injuries at UM but I thought Arroyo was good to go? Is there a chance he can’t go?
I may have missed him being good to go. I just know it's a hammy issue so I always know they can be a nagging issue long term. If he ain't 100%, keep him out til he's 100% ya know? I could be wrong tho. Last I heard was the update on Through the Smoke and they were unsure of his status
